Chocolate lab pups...who's got em??

  • elcidcock said...

By the way, someone asked about colors in each litter...the black gene is dominant so if a particular mating pair has strong black in their bloodline then it's very likely to have all black puppies. I once bred my yellow with a chocolate and the litter came out all black and that was the explanation I got.

Our female was Black. Male was Yellow. Litter came out perfect:
    2 Black Male
    2 Black Female
    1 Yellow Male
    1 Yellow Female
    1 Chocolate Male
    1 Chocolate Female

  • Wait a minute, are we saying that chocolates have a different demeanor than black ones or yellow ones?

How can that be? Isn't that like saying blonde qb's have stronger arms, but brunette ones pick up the system better?

    someone explain, please

I've had labs of all three colors in my life and have never noticed a difference in them that I could contribute to the color of their coat. If you think about it, that really makes very little sense. Unless there's been some scientific study done out there to find some kind of link between the coat color gene and disposition it just doesn't add up. The only difference is the coat color gene. My last lab was a beautiful blocky yellow that was almost white. I've been itching to get another one but really don't have a preferrence between the colors, just want a big block head and stocky build.

It doesn't make any sense to me either but I've heard it from 2 big breeders and 1 trainer. Between those 3 alone they've dealt with thousands of them and they've all had the same opinion. Like I said, I've never personally owned one so I'm just relaying what those have told me.

  • I don't know about all that dominant gene stuff. They may be more athletic and high strung but I don't know about dominant. I am totally for having fun, but when it comes to breeding stick with your own kind. I support inter breeding for others, just not my two puppies. That doesn't make me racist. My neighbor has a chocolate lab and I enjoy her when she runs in my yard and craps. I just want to keep my lines clean.

You know those Chocolates are crazy and very very very high strung, right??

Have four GREAT chocolates. One female, two brothers, and another male. All well behaved and trained. It's all how you train them and exercise them.

I've never personally owned a chocolate lab but everyone I've talked with about them(owners, breeders, trainers) say that they're always the hardest lab to deal with. They say they end up being the highest strung, hardest to train and least disciplined of any labs. I have no idea why but I have spoken with numerous people that all have the same opinion.

    Ridiculous.

I foster for the Wild Heir Labrador Rescue and last year alone raised 21 black, yellow, and chocolate lab pups from 6-8 wks old until they were adopted. I also kept another 12-15 dogs of various colors, sex, and ages that found their furr-ever homes. Haven't found one yet that can't be well trained and be a great companion.

I own 4 chocolates, male and female and they are fantastic dogs that were easily trained.

So, all you have to do is be patient for 4 years !

I am hoping so, I have a 2 year old black lab and he is just as energetic as when he was a pup. He just takes fewer naps now

I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I am all out of bubble gum.

two black labs can produce blondes and chocolates, has nothing to do with the color of the parents.

  • Bunch of 'scrimination. My chocolate is calmer than my last yellow. Can't beat a good lab. Now if i could stop him from eating mulch. . .

  • True. It's all about the color genes in their bloodlines and with three possibilities it almost impossible to predict unless you know the dogs lines and litter breakdown going way back.

  • I have a yellow Lab and an English Springer spaniel, two of the best dogs I've ever had. If you're going to own a Lab, I think you need to make every effort to get them in the water as often as you can. Both of my dogs seem to be the happiest when they are splashing in the water.

  • We had a female chocolate lab (we got from a Columbia shelter when she was a puppy) for 13 wonderful years. She was and always will be a member of the family. I've had a number of dogs and breeds over my 63 years, but the chocolate lab was the best by far.

If you get a lab, take time with them. They are so smart and really easy to train. Their devotion is without debate and the experience will give you a lifetime of memories.
