  • I think it's a good thing they have it. And I think it's something we are going to try and emulate with Midlands.

With that said - it pisses me off that they are able to skew their enrollment stats because of it. As a program though, I think it's useful and makes sense.

  • It is a great program. I know several kids that take advantage of that. Also easier on the parent's wallets...I think USC does some similar stuff but doesn't market it like Clemson does...

  • I knew a couple of guys who had to go that route to get into Clemson. Some of the guys couldn't think their way out of a wet paper bag. One of them went by the nickname "Goat". I just assume that is what he was attracted to at the time.

  • My college has a bridge program, when some of the bridge students tell me their test scores I just shake my head. But since my beautiful gf got in that way I can't complain too much.

  • I think it is a good program as well, but if they are going to take those students money, they should have to include them in their average SAT and other enrollment statistics.

The problem is, clemson has a monopoly going via room and board. Those students have to stay at apartments clemson owns. It is mandatory unless you live in pickens county. And the upcharge for those apartments is ridiculous. This comes from the parents of many current students in that program.

A rough estimate of the costs for this program is 15k/per year. That includes the required housing fee at the 5 star resort they make you stay in as well as the "Bridge Program" fee you are required to pay. Of course none of that gaurantees admission to the university after completing the program.

On the other hand tuition for a full time 15 hour student at Tri-County, Greenville Tech, Midlands, or Tri-dent is roughly 5-6k. I think I'd rather pay 6k live at home and take my chances with the admission board after I gained my 30 hours.

Sounds like extortion to me really.

With lottery money, full time at Tri-County is about $1,000 per semester out of pocket.

USC doesn't do anything like that. Midlands and USC do not communicate at all, and you have to check everything you take to make sure it transfers.

I work with a guy who doesn't have the grades to get on the farm( god help him, I don't know how he doesn't have a .9 GPA ), so he is in the bridge program. He has to make a certain GPA, then he gets to go to the promised land.

What is weird to me is that he is going to live on campus with the fat girls and the better looking pigs. How does that work? I guess klimpson uses the bridge program to add to their enrollment, when a lot of them never even become klemmers.

  • i knew a kid getting c's and d's at midlands and really was surprised when i told him you need at least a b for the credit to transfer.

the bottom line is most kids that got the community college route typically aren't in it solely to save money

Also, Midlands doesn't know which classes transfer, they just tell you to ask USC. They should communicate better.

You'd rather live at home than in an apartment at college?

Look up the program. The "apartment" costs $6,300. That is more than $700/per month. This is Clemson we are talking about, not downtown Charleston, and they require you to live there. It would be one thing if this is a dorm, but it is privately owned real estate, built by a local developer and Clemson booster.

The "bridge program" fee is another $2,600, just to have an advisor from Clemson to tell which classes transfer and which don't. For the record about 2 hours worth of research and I could give you this info on my own.

I went this route. I gathered 36 hours at Clemson and at Tech schools in one year so I could transfer to USC. I went to the USC admissions office and sat down with a counselor for "free" and said exactly what do I need to transfer. I walked out with a list of the 30 hours required and was a full time USC student 1 year later, and saved the money.

are you asking him as a student, or a parent?
Of course, students want to stay there. Who wouldn't want to give in a gated community on the lake with everything from lazy rivers, taning beds and even spas. You get your own bedroon and bath. Student? Heck yes

But go talk to the parents I know. They will tell you straight up this is robbery. They force a resort on you at resort costs. The parents I know are outraged. But they have zero options.

  • Hey guys I'm a University Ambassador at USC so I think I can give you a pretty good outlook of the programs. The Bridge program at Clemson has worked brilliantly for them; however, it allows for a lot of students that would never get into Clemson or USC or really any college to make it into the school. When going for admission they only look at the students G.P.A.'s rather than SAT because they are transfer students. Clemson got screwed over a couple of years ago because they don't include any of those statistics into there portfolio's for the classes. A couple of the ranking sources have forced them to start publishing those as well. I have friends from home who barely graduated and they are now in Clemson because of the program. USC just announced that they are starting a bridge program with Midlands. It will start this upcoming fall and all of the students will live in the Roost. Instead of staying in a 5 star resort like at Clemson, they are staying in the worst place on campus! So Midlands and USC are now beginning to communicate and it will be interesting to see what they do with this program.

  • I know there ar a lot of students who do the bridge pragram with qualifying sat scores but on the boarder line. Clempson is garnishing out of state money by admitting as many out of state kids as they can getting the high tuitions fees knowing full well that about 35 to 40% will party there assses off and mommy and daddy will pull them out. that is why the availability to transfer in to upper classes ie sophmore and junior level courses is so easy.
it is business... the school is making money bottom line. this also allows them to take only the upper level SAT scores for the statistics

I hope she transfers to USC. As long as she is going to school and making good grades I will be proud of her... No matter where it is
