Commentary: What just happened?

For those of us who have covered Steve Spurrier for more than a short time, it was easy to see from the second he walked in the door that he had something on his mind.

  • ...'if he goes we go" ? Not a flame just curious . Who constitutes the local media ?

  • Seems fairly obvious to this armchair psychologist that as the Garcia thing came to a head, Spurrier began to get worked up thinking about how Morris would apply the most unfair spin possible to Garcia's departure, and use it as his latest salvo against USC and Spurrier. I would guess that this rubbed him the wrong way, and revived all his anger over the Ellington garbage.

  • It is a shame, but not entirely unexpected, that the assembled media would take Ron's side. Maybe they should take a deeper look into themselves, their actions, and accountability for the facts instead of showing support for "one of their own." He's been attacking our program for a long time. Sometimes, he finds a nugget of truth and expounds upon it to try to create some great scandal. But if that's not available, he makes stuff up. It is why I haven't paid a cent to that rag for at least two years now. Sad reaction by all, though, IMO. And sadder still that this incident will lead to a bump in newspaper sales in the coming days.

Wealth is the product of man's capacity to think. There are no evil thoughts except one: The refusal to think.

  • Someone refresh my memory. Was Morris the one that unfairly quoted Holtz as saying "if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying"?

I thought that was Chad Knauss...

  • Thanks JW. I am of the opinion that SOS did what he could to shield Garcia from the media because he loves SG and knows the young man has serious problems that we are not privy to. he has put all the attention on himself and RM because he can handle the media circus that ensues. I respect him now more than ever. It is we Gamecocks vs everyone else and his team knows it and will come together even more. JMHO

  • "if he goes, we go"? Seriously? Exactly what principal is the 'local media' trying to defend? Spurrier said Morris can is free to write opinion, just not lies. And I have to question anybody that would attempt to defend him on the basis of the content of his articles.
'if he goes, we go'? Then go, and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

  • "Loved by all his teammates"......I played with a kid that we all liked and he was a hell of a player. But he keep doing stupid stuff and getting suspended (or skipped practice). It got old after awhile. We all knew we just couldn't count on him.

  • Good let them all go. Only Big Spur subscribers will get info from Spurrier and that's fine by me. This is assuming Big Spur didn't side with MoRon.

  • I read more into this. Something happened between those two this week. Had to have..I don't believe this was a smoke screen over SG. Spurrier has too much experience over that. The local media likes Morris..Corey Miller worked with him in NC. Teddy is a personal friend I think. Then the whole First Amendment deal. Truth is the average USC fan prefers pink eye to Ron Morris. We want a homer most of the time. We want to feel good about our team when we get up in the am. We are sick of folks intentionally trying to hurt our recruiting on key recruiting weekends with overblown hype over personal vendettas. I think SOS finally reached his breaking point. I doubt USC can diassociate itself with RM as it is a State instituion but I bet Hyman and the State's editors have had some heart to hearts today. Should be an interesting ride..It always is around here...

PK was on the ESPN Spartanburg station at about 5:30 and said he showed up late (right after the rant) and Teddy Heffner walked by and said "If he won't talk in front of him, I'm not staying."

  • "if he goes, we go"

That does not set well with me. I'd rather be like Glenn Snyder, known as a "friend of the program" - than one who is open and willing to take shots at the very hand that feeds them. Too many media guys forget that USC is the ONLY game in town. We don't have to be "homers" on CU's level - but we shouldn't be known as shaking our fists at USC either. If someone doesn't like USC / SOS, move on to an sports organization that you do like.

"if he goes, we go" .... VERY curious response. no

And the world said "who gives a chit what you do Teddy. You are as relevant as naval lint."

If you're looking for specific names, those are left out for a reason. Local media includes everyone who covers the team - TV stations, other newspapers, internet, etc.

For whatever it is worth, Morris says he stands by his story. There are some other members of the media who say they have the same information that Morris does, thus the defense. I don't know the ins and outs behind the Ellington situation and how it all came about.

this..................SOS, and more so, his wife have put in overtime to help Stephen with his issues and to me it has now become protective mode to fend off enemies. I think they should be commended for their actions.
