Connor Shaw

  • This young man is growing into a great qb. He couldn't have had a better game and although Alshon had a great game I think Conner deserved the MVP award. He didn't force the ball and took what the defense gave him. He is going to be a great player for USC and will lead them to many more record setting seasons. GO COCKS!!

64% completion percentage 2 TDs passing, 1 rushing. No turnovers. Nice.

    Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty

Agree with post. When Conner first took over at QB I was a little concerned that he was so focused and studious that he would be isolated and miss the team part of being the leader. Conner has a great work ethic and has proven to have the respect and friendship of his teammates as well. His off the field and as you pointed out, on the field decision making is the same....excellent.

Connor Shaw is not an elite QB. He's a good QB. An efficient QB. A QB good enough to win in the SEC. He's not an elite QB.

    Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty

I'm asking an honest question here. What about him is not elite?

The only thing I can think of is that he does not appear to audible into and out of certain plays at the LOS. Other than that, he runs well, he protects the ball, he is accurate, and he wins.

Edit: I'm not saying he is elite, I just don't understand why he definitively isn't.

If you expanded the meaning of "elite" to include every QB who is above average I'd say he's elite. He's not an Andrew Luck, a RGII, a Case Keenum, though.

Connor Shaw is Phil Petty 3.0. An efficient game manager with speed to burn. The kid is a playmaker. I'm definitely looking forward to next season with him leading the offense.

Sometimes you don't have to look at things in a `proper, by-the-book' manner. Perhaps when he signed with USC he wasn't rated as an elite QB. But there is much more to it than recruiting ratings. Shaw's on and off the field performance has been outstanding and his record as a starter this season speaks for itself - 9-1. The loss at Arky can be laid at the feet of the defense.

Case Keenum isn't an elite QB. He is from the tree of David Klingler and Andre Ware; good system against mediocre competition. I would agree with your assessment on Andrew Luck, though. Watching him play last night and he made some really nice throws. Wish him well on the next level.

I'm sorry Al but we don't know that he is not. He is a sophomore that has an 8-1 record as a starter at Carolina. He now can claim leading the greatest season in school history with out his starting left tackle and Heisman candidate RB. He led a couple of come from behind wins that we havent seen in years here.
If you look at how much better he has gotten from his first start against ECU and MSU to how he performed in the Clemson and Nebraska games the difference is night and day. With experience he is improving fast as the game slows down for him.

I think elite means that he makes plays that win the game and is not just a "game manager". He hits receivers in the hands and makes the correct read and can make yardage with his feet when he is called upon. He has had a tendency to take off too soon, but with as porous as the OL was at pass protection who could blame him, he has started to stand and move up in the pocket and trust the line. I will also say he is tough as nails. I believe he will put in the time and work to be special. I think he has a way about him that he makes his teammates.

You say he is not Andrew Luck or RG 3, but they werent the QBs they are today in their first year as a starter either.

Fine. If you want to contort the meaning of "elite" to include Connor Shaw that's okay with me.

    Uh no

Stronger arm and runs better . More accurate ...to me that makes them different

I tried to tell to people Shaw was the answer and he could handle it . I got bashed and bashed and bashed

I don't think he is an elite passer. I do think if he works at his game over the spring and summer he can become an elite college quarterback in the mold of a Chase Daniel or Todd Reesing. Neither of those guys really jumped off the page with their measurables, but they were both super accurate, had adequate arm strength and in the case of Daniel were also mobile.

Shaw throws a great deep ball, doesn't put the ball in danger, is good at running the ball, and if he can get the short timing routes down he can be a complete QB. I think Daniel and Reesing were elite college QB's and I think that Shaw has every chance to be as good as those guys.

  • I like the question asked earlier in the thread ... if we're going to argue over whether a quarterback is elite or not, we should be able to define 'elite' first. If you can't answer that question, you don't have a leg to stand on in the discussion.
