I know coach gets fired up a lot, but he lit into BW during a timeout today. I felt bad for BW, but couldn't stop laughing. I love this about coach that he's not rebuilding in his mind. He wants to win and waiting isn't an option. However, I wondered to myself what he could have done so bad to warrant that ass chewing.
saw him let into several players... jumped eric smith when smith tried to dribble up the sideline and got trapped. we had to burn a timeout!
Looks like he rips everyone whether we are 20 down or 20 up when they make mental errors. They seem to understand where he is coming from too.
The thing I love about him is that he defends his players to others just as fiercely as he lays into them. There have been a number of times during press conferences when a crticism of a player has been raised by a media member, and Coach has gone on and on about the positive things that said player does. He really is a unique character.
My parents say Martin is too mean. They don't like him, and think nobody is going to come play for him. I told them that they are paying too much attention to his facial expressions. Martin doesn't say anything coach K doesn't say, he's just meaner looking.
Martin ran into the same problem at K-state. I hope it's not an issue here.
Ally will beat the crap out of Uga.
Yea there were rumors of people not taking to his meanness at K State.
Yet he had them in the Elite 8 and the NCAA tourney on a regular basis.
He also is very defensive of his players in the media.
He is just trying to whip these guys into men.
I'll bet your little league games all ended in ties and your folks love participation trophies. Parents are the reason kids are soft.
I agree, and I love the guy. I have no problem with how he talks to the players, and neither do they. I got to know Minda Kacinas this past semester some, and whenever you say Coach Frank's name, he smiled. The players love Coach Frank. I don't think it will be an issue here. I think people like my parents will get used to it. Martin is just big, and kind of mean looking. He's a great guy, and will defend his players till the death.
Ripping your guys as needed in house, but defending them to the death to others = Family.
Perfect coaching philosophy IMO
break out the orange slices and the Capri Suns, everyone's a winner babe!
Martin is a throw back coach.. he is a life coach as well as basketballl. My opinion of his coaching style is this. If you are a parent of kid and you are unsure or the player is unsure of his style just don't go to Carolina. He will be successful regardless.
“There’s this myth that parents don’t want discipline in their children’s lives, that they don’t want people to instill that passion in their lives,” Martin says. “My answer to that is, I know the people who contact me, and if that’s the case, why do good players always wind up playing for me? This is going back 27 years. How do I always end up with good players?
Larry Johnson, the former UNLV and NBA star, told Martin during a golf tournament that he would have loved to play for Martin and his intense style. Baron Davis said the same thing at a charity dinner. Robert Horry, the seven-time NBA champion, approached him in a hotel lobby in Los Angeles once and said, “ ‘Coach, I don’t care what anyone ever says, don’t ever change. Those young people need people like you in their lives,’ ” Martin recalls.
Good post. Looks over the top to me but I'm looking from the stands, can't hear what is being said, and the important thing is how his players respond to him and so far so good on that. Not just here but also over his career with very good results. I just hope he doesn't bust a blood vessel while he is coaching them up.
He has also said many times that he loves these kids and they know it. This team gives more effort than any team I've seen a quite a while.
I love his approach
I coached baseball with a good friend of mine a few years back. We won a state championship at a place where nobody thought a baseball title was possible. I give him all the credit. I was just along for the ride. He absolutely lit into kids when they needed it, and from time to time, he caught hell for it from fans and parents, but every single kid in that program would walk through a wall of fire for him. When you love kids and you show them that love every day, they aren't offended by your discipline, they appreciate it.
I can see that being the case with Martin. Those who don't like it will go elsewhere but most will stay because they know how much he cares about them.
Yesterday, he jumped all down Smith's throat, Williams's throat, and another guy too - maybe Richardson but I don't remember, might even have been Bruce after a turnover.
"Whenever u say Coach Franks name he smiled."
Post of the Century!!!
Make sure that they remember, forever, the night they played the Titans!!!
with Martin everyone knows where they stand. He plays not favorites. Play the game the way he coaches and you'll have no problems with him. FM talked about how they told the kids time after time to keep the ball in the middle of the court to neutralize the Arky press. ith did that and got scortched. I think Williams picked up his dribble for no reason and got doubled leading to a turnover. Arky rarely scored easily on us unless it was off a turnover. FM new the way we were playing, turnovers were the only way the Hogs woulld get back in this one.
The kids will remember what they did wrong because of the scortchings. FM also knows he has to get maximum execution out of this team to win in the SEC. I do not feel bad for any of the kids. Doi it the right way and do not get scortched. Do iot the right way and win games.
This made me laugh so hard. I got kicked out of coaching one of those participation leagues one time for demanding they call traveling by the 4th step. Only was there as a favor to a friend.
