We don't look close to as fundamentally sound as we did under Tanner. This team struggles with doing the little things right and it costs us.
costen made the same base running blunders last year with tanner in charge. here is the big difference in this team than the last 2 years. we don't have great leaders. in the last 2 years we lost wingo, morales, bradley, walker, marzilli, merrfiield, roth and price. We don't have anyone like those guys right now. i think we have some that might come around but not right now. I still like our team and the one problem that i have had so far has been that we have used webb too much and then today i see my greatest fear come to life when he has some arm trouble and will be reevaluated.
With the lineup shuffles due to injuries, I think Holbrook has done a great job. Looking at the overall picture, I can't find a lot of fault. The defensive problems are frustrating and hard to watch, but given the circumstances understandable. If Webb has a real problem, that would be a killer as my biggest disappointment has been basically Westy and Webb are about the only people I trust in the pen and I thought this would be a strength.
Is there ever a situation where you don't try and cast another coach I a negative light Vs Ray?
I think the man was just making conversation IMO. Ease up, its a message board.
I should have qualified my original post that I still think we have a great team. It just doesn't seem we have the same moxy. Maybe it's the leadership like the poster said above.
our defense up the middle, the last three years, was about as good as you are going to see. with our catching being plus, with the great centerfielders we have had, the old baseball maxim about being good up the middle defensively proved true
we now have different folks at second & ss. they are good players but nowhere near as experienced & talented as the folks we had, defensively
it is not their fault they are young & craven. they are going to have to suffer & learn. different team. good, talented, but experience, and leadership, do not sprout up overnight. we may have to wander in the wilderness of not quite super baseball for a season. woe is us
Our infield defense is about the same as last year. Walker was a better 1st baseman than Dantzler, Danzler and Vegason are about a push at 3rd, Schrock is MUCH better at 2nd than vergason ever was. Pankake's defense is about the same as it was (unfortunately).
The outfield defense (when healthy) is about the same but we have not been healthy. When we were down Saiko and English it was not nearly up to our standard. We miss English's arm but that is out of the coach's control.
Our bunting has been better this year. We consistently get the ball down and have rarely popped up, struck out, or bunted into DPs.
Our baserunning sucks but this is not new. We have been the worst baserunning team in the SEC for years. We give away outs on the bases every single weekend and did the same last year and the year before that. We are stealing more bases and getting caught less so that is an improvement.
We are striking out less than the last 2 years and homering more.
You asked for opinions, those are mine.
Tonight's game only strengthens my opinion on this topic.
Well we have definitely been spoiled! We have not been healthy all year, but we also have not shown to be solid fundamentally! The thing that worries me is our pitching! Florida used 8 different pitchers in the last 2 days and most of them didn't se more than 4 batters in relief and they all seemed to be 90+ pitchers! We don't have but 2 that we use in relief! Now we have one of those who is experiencing aem troubles! I don't know what the deal is or if it's anything that could have been avoided! Will say that a buddy of mine were talking about the fact that we don't understand why we don't get the 90-95 mph pitchers like Florida does! It could that Meyers reputation of using pitchers alot hurts him with those types of players! May have nothing to do with it at all!
Tanner coached infield. Tifwiw
I think we miss Tanner, but Holbrook will grow into this role. I think we miss the three most clutch players in our history as much as Tanner right now. Takes awhile to replace that and I can't imagine doing it in just one year.
This group made Tanner a better coach as well.
Youth is a contributing factor to a lot of mistakes that has occurred during the season. Like a above poster said experience and leadership from players are lacking this year compared to previous seasons

Why was Costen way over there anyway? Surely he was goung the whole way.
