Blew it all and filed bankruptcy.
Cant afford? I dont understand that statement at all! He made millions in the league, if you mean that in a money way!
I think all of you guys are missing the bigger picture issue here. That is the overall public relations strategy of the South Carolina Athletics department.
The only show I (sometimes) listen to on 107.5 is the Spurrier call in show. All that station does is read University press releases. You can also put GCC in that same category (mouthpiece of the University). If you want lets also put Spurs and Feathers in that category (got to have something to line the cat liter box with right?)
They need to understand there are other sources of media (this site, 560...) that report on Gamecock athletics and just because they don't cut a check to the Ath Dept does not mean they are not relevant.
I think Friday on air Corey went overboard. But the University had the opportunity to put out the fire when smoke was just starting. But I can understand how issues dealing with a person's son would be a sore subject.
I suppose I can understand why some people dont like Corey's message. But as an alumni & booster I actually like it. 90% of the time I agree with him. He called the Darrin Horn stuff perfectly. I agree with him about Deke Adams. You are going from a proven commodity, one of the best in the game Lawing, to a guy that coaches a few years at a small minority college and got 1 year at a "legitimate" program.
Again - this goes back to overall LACK of a PR strategy by the athletics. ON DAY ONE of the Deke hire the department should have had interviews lined up on all local radio shows, and TV shows, and websites? Why? Get ahead of the game. Put out YOUR message. If Deke would have spoke with Corey on the air for 10-15 minutes I bet 90% of this crap never gets started.
Bottom line - the University needs to be more proactive about its public relations.
Someone posted in another thread or in this one above that maybe.....just maybe the coaches didn't want big mouth Corey Miller around the other parents during their first visit to campus to meet the coaches.
If you listen to Corey's show. and I do, two things are clear. He loves Carolina and he is butt hurt over this thing and is going to do anything he can to poison Carolina with other parents and recruits. He said that on his show.
He said on his show......Do you think recruits parents don't talk to each other? Yes they do and I am going to tell them how bad Carolina treats it's former players. Do you think kids don't talk? Yes they do. Christian is going to tell others how Carolina mistreated him. That's just the way it works.
Corey said that on his show. He's right up front with it. You can take it to mean he's just Mr. UltraTellTheTruth or you can take it to mean what I took it to mean.....he is going to do all he can to poison Carolina recruiting this year.
That is an obscene statement PittCock. Corey never threatened to poison the well. He is providing brilliant feedback (what other programs are doing during their recruiting process). He is showing all of us a "peek behind the curtain". If USC was smart they would lock in Christians commitment - kiss his ass - and get him to keep visiting those other schools and try to swing recruits. I guess we are not that smart. You have a kid that has been wearing Gamecock under-roos since he was a tot. Of course we screw that up.
It goes back to University PR. You have an ex-player on the radio during prime time. If you are smart you have someone from the athletics department meeting with him every week. Get YOUR message out there.
The way I heard it, Corey said he was going to tell every recruit he was in contact with how we treat our former players, and suck at recruiting.
He also is very disrespectful to coach Botkin and Coach Adams.
I don't know if Corey has ever done anything "Brilliant" since his playing days were over.
Ally will beat the crap out of Uga.
Yes he did.
To be fair to Corey, he said what I posted he said, but it's up to how you interpret that as to whether or not you think he is going to try to poison Carolina's recruiting. My guess is Corey feels like he's just telling the truth and Carolina is the one poisoning their recruiting. I just don't happen to agree.
I like Coreys show and will continue to listen. The biggest thing I hate about this situation is some fans are getting Christians ability mixed up with being mad at Corey. The reason I have said from the word go that I hope Christian goes to a school other than Carolina that we do not play is because of Corey. Not his sons ability.
Christian sounds like a fine young man and good player. Corey would the deal breaker if I had to make the decision, which none of us do.
I hate to tell you this, but steve miller probably has more money is his piggy bank than Corey miller has in bank accounts.
bankruptcy filings are public information.
so are charges of check fraud, foreclosures, etc.
Y'all are over complicating things, IMO. We are likely to sign one LB this cycle and Botkins wants it to be BAW and right now we lead for him. It's doubtful we take another LB, so if we want Christian its as a de and right now he's not top of the de board regardless of what JC says. JC is correct in that he is very talented, but he's a tweener if we don't take him as an LB. I think he'll grow into a very good WDE, so I hope we do decide to press for him. Instead of attacking Botkins, we need to look at what the "F" hire is thinking about his DL offers.
I'm not sure what part of my quoted post is over complicated?
You and other keep bringing COrey into this and talking about more than what's IMo really going on. IMo it's a numbers game. We don't want him at our only LB slot, and now its whether Adams wants him at DE. Adams needs to make a call, and IMO he's being a bit slow in regard to picking up for Lawing on dealing with his assessment of Christian.
We don't know Adams' preference for types of DE, is he like Lawing or maybe more like the LSU approach which is for bigger run stopping DE's. we don't know yet, maybe he looks at Christian and says he can't carry enough weight. But the question isn't about Corey it's about whether DA thinks Christian can grow into a DE for him.
To all of JC's comments BAW is in our back yard ad likes us, our LB coach likes him better so what's the issue? Now if we take 2 lb's and one isn't Miller, I have to question that.
He probably gets an NFL pension, but I don't know how much that would be.
10-4. You feel like this is all about the player and the player fit.
We'll just have to disagree.
I think it's being handled like it is due to Corey Millers big mouth. I think Carolina does not need Christian Miller for the reasons you state and with Corey Millers big mouth, Spurrier or Ward has decided they won't be giving them the time of day.
I am probably 100% off base.
I wouldn't use Corey and brilliant in the same sentence, but that's me. As for "prime time", we're talking about an AM Columbia afternoon talk show with a very limited audience, very few if any would be potential recruits. I actually like some parts of his show but quickly change channels when he goes off on things that to me comes off as bad radio. i would certainly understand if the current staff is hesitant to pursue his son because of him and not because of the kid supposedly not being a fit in their system. He is constantly critical of Junior without acknowledging any positives with the wide receiver play and he is quick to criticize coaching hires made by a Hall of Fame coach and has been proven wrong on those quick judgements before. Yes he is paid to give his opinion on the radio, but I would expect a former player to be more diplomatic in his approach with his alma mater.
You don't start drawing on the NFL pension until age 55.
One thing that does not make sense to me is Lawings recruitment of Christian.
Corey has said several times that they have not heard anything from Carolina since the UGA game. Nothing. Brad Lawing was our DL coach up til mid Jan. so he was around the entire season and through the bowl game/practices. Corey speaks glowingly of how hard Brad is recruiting Christian for UF.
Are we to believe Brad did not contact Corey at all until he went to UF even after offering his son as a DE? Now that Lawing is at UF he's all of a sudden all over Christian and a great recruiter?
That makes no sense.
Found this on Nfl pensions.
The NFL has had a retirement pension in place since 1959. Players with at least one credited season in 1993 or after are vested after three credited seasons.
Players earn benefit credits for each season they play. The credit for each season earned between 1998 and 2011 is $470; the monthly pension is calculated as the sum of all benefit credits. So a player with five credited seasons between 1998 and 2011 would receive a monthly pension at age 55 of $2,350 for his lifetime.
In addition to the pension, a 401(k)-type plan called the NFL Player Second Career Savings Plan provides an employer match of up to $2 for every $1 contributed by the player. The maximum match is $24,000 through 2014, rising incrementally to $28,000 through 2020. Players are eligible for the 2-to-1 club matching contribution once they have earned their second credited season.
In addition, players receive contributions to the Player Annuity Program once they have earned their fourth credited season. The contribution amount for a credited season from 2011-2013 is $65,000, increasing to $80,000 for 2014-2017 and $95,000 from 2018-2020. Players may choose to receive this benefit as early as age 35 and five years out of the league as a monthly annuity or in annual installments.

"People always ask me if I wish I were bigger. I tell them no. I always wanted to be a miniature badass." Dustin Pedroia
Good points. Of course, Gainesille residents are not subjected to Corey's show, so the FL staff does not have to weigh Corey's mostly negative radio rants against the University into the equation.
I am sure that Corey has said "some" positive things about USC, but so has Moo U's Dilbert. It also depends on the emphasis that Corey gives to the negatives compared to the positives.
So, we should have had Corey meet with Deke as part of a PR move? Why, since he is not in our AD or on our coaching staff? Corey was railing against Deke the minute that Deke was announced, with no time for him to be interviewed, so that would not have changed things. Who did Corey want us to hire other than his buddy Chris Rumph who said he was not interested? Perhaps, he wants to be a coach or even expressed interest.
The problem with Corey is that he goes off negatively about things immediately without any research on his side or without giving the hire or whatever any chance to prove his worth. Then, he publicly states his intention to hurt USC at all costs. Why because we offered his son at rush end instead of LB or did not kiss his butt to attend the first Junior Day which is open to all juniors? Sorry, but he loves himself more than his son and infinitely more than his University.
I would agree with most of what you are saying honestly. Corey is passionate and tends to go overboard at times but he loves USC and those that don't see that aren't just being honest with themselves. He is a radio show personality whose job is to discuss USC and sometimes Clemson sports for the most part. He may not be the best with how he comes across but most of what he says does have some validity to it. Now if Christian weren't his son it probably wouldn't even be discussed but my feelings would be hurt too if I were him. USC has a history of not being to kind to it's past players. They don't go out of their way to build those relationships and use them to their advantage like they should. I'm hoping that Coach Tanner gets wind of all of this. This is now way more than just USC not recruiting Christian very hard because he doesn't fit our scheme and it sounds like some people need to sit down and come to a happy medium. Bottom line, USC screwed up by not including Christian in our Junior Day. We can only take 15 guys or so this year so we all know there are a lot of people that are going to be left out and be turned away because of the small number of scholarships that are available to us, so regardless if he fits our scheme or not, he should have been there.
Sounds like USC has a problem. Many people have been saying this for YEARS and YEARS! We've talked about over here many, many times. So why is everyone now pissed at Corey because he brings it up?? Maybe now the athletics department will do something about it.
Ray is doing something about it. Corey is a cancer, we don't want him around.
