I'm kinda 50/50 on the first inning bunt call. But to your point - not sure Tanner ever had Walker bunt - did Christian have one sacrifice bunt in 3 years?
I don't mean to sound like I'm disparaging Joey, and he's had some "clutch" hits , but Walker got "clutch" hits like no one I can remember & I've been following the baseball team since '74. The other thing, too, is I'm not sure whether or not Walker came up to bat under the same circumstances... 1st & 2nd with no outs early in a winner-take-all game!!

My only point in bringing up Walker is that Ray probably would never have taken the bat out of his hands - he was our best hitter. Pancake has been on fire the last couple of weeks - maybe our best post season threat - not sure that I would have taken the bat out of his hands in the first inning today either.

Lost game 1 because of errors.Lost game 3 because of errors. Not going to Omaha because of errors.Errors all year long.Overall hitting and pitching we wore UNC's ass out.If UNC plays in Omaha like they did against us they will be home in 2.
First year we won the national title under Tanner, we were one of the leading teams nationally in sac bunts!
Yes, and a squeeze in Omaha!
There's just one more thing I'm gonna say about the first inning bunt......later in the game Holbrook said that 3 runs weren't gonna be enough to win the game......so why play small ball out the gate? Also, in the last inning, and I know being aggressive worked on that pitcher the first time.. ...but considering the situation....I woulda wanted our players to at least be more patient at the plate.....
Once or twice. I love Joey's bat, but he ain't Christian Walker yet. A bit apples to oranges.
Tanner bunted a ton last year and the year before. Statistically, it may not be the best move over 1,000,000 scenarios as the original poster points out. That said, this was one situation. Those statistics are great over the long haul, but if I am trying to get a run, I bunt there. I would have let Joey hit, but I can't say it was the wrong move not to. Most college coaches lay one down with first and second and nobody out in today's game.
Either way, saying we lost because of bench coaching (which you didn't say), is just wrong, IMO.
Because runs add up, you don't have to get them all at once. After we just blew them out , we jump on them early you put a lot of pressure on them and you make it easier on our freshman pitcher. To say the call was wrong/ or cost us the game is absurd. Would I have bunted, probably not, but I understand why he did and can't fault the call. Hard to be patient with 2 outs left in the game, you don't take a pitch just to take it with the tying run on base, Dantzler and Greiner both swung at good pitches it just didn't pay off.
This is not Major League Baseball, it's college, and a lot of differing factors at play.
