Our staff has done a good job the last several years recruiting across the board. As we all know things workout. We are a much better team and much more respected in the SEC than we were 5 years ago. If Rolin had not decomitted we wouldnt even be worried. There is still a month and a half before signing day. Things will workout. Have confidence in the coaches. Just because one recruit felt like he was not getting the attention he deserved does not mean we aren't doing a good job.
Actually, our LB recruiting has been pretty poor.
Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty
And is it supposed to be fixed in one year?
Goes back to our previous LB coach and DC.
1) A&M has 6 LB commitments for the class of '13. They sure seem intent on filling their LB needs in one year.
2) How so? Was he slow in approving offers?
Who, on our current staff, recruited the primary difference makers we have had on our team the last few years.
Bottom line is our recruiting is not trending up.
We will see what happens with David Williams and Na'ty Rogers. I will not be holding my breath.
We basically have 3 recruiters on our staff:
Whammy (whose impact is lessened now that he has full time DC responsibilities)
Every other "recruiter" we have on our staff is mediocre at best. That's the facts, jack.
Shane Beamer was an A+ recruiter, we replaced him with two F recruiters
Shane was also an A+ Recruiting Coordinator, and although I think that job is overrated, he was replaced with an F recruiting coordinator
Jay Graham was an A+ recruiter, he was not replaced by someone who recruits anywhere near this level
We replaced EJ with a high school LB coach who is not known, in any way, as a recruiter
We neutered Brad Lawing over Travian
Don't be confused. We absolutely need more Jimmy's and Joe's than we have gotten the last cycle and so far this cycle.
Our DL and OL recruiting has been relatively good, and great based on our history, but we need skill guys, we need LB's or we will not compete with the teams we want to compete with consistently.
This is my main concern.
we appear to be in good shape for 2014, but with the way that we have closed recently - i am not holding my breath. it is imperative that Sands or Botkin have success on the recruiting trail. based on early returns for 2014, i would say Sands has the better shot.
it just dumbfounds me that we cannot sign another top flight LB besides L. Bryant with our current LB roster situation.
I liked Graham and Beamer. It would be a plus in staff stability if they were still here. However, if they were A+ recruiters, they didn't take their A game with them based on the recruits I saw on their respective team boards. They may very well be having better results if they were still here.
Couple of comments:
1. Better team than 5 years ago is meaningless when looking towards the future. We sucked 5 years ago, and most are not content with not making the SECC game.
2. LB recruiting has been poor at best for the past 5 years. LB play has benefitted greatly from an unbelievable DL. When Clowney and crew leave we better have better guys at LB and secondary.
3. Rolin did decommit so your comment makes absolutely no sense. Further, Langley decommitted and he was the bigger loss.
4. Things just don't "Workout." Not for a staff that shows complete ineptness or conviction towards recruiting. Our staff is the weakest recruting staff in the SEC given our on-the-field success, and it isn't close.
5. I have confidence in our coaches come game day, but recruiting...no. Trouble is we have to have talent to compete. Took SOS a long time to get to our level of competition and he did so landing GREAT (not just coachable) players. Recruiting has dropped.
6. Not just "one" recruit decommitted.
Look, I love our staff and am extremely excited about Carolina football, but this is the SEC and you gotta compete (and win) in all phases...facilities, branding, preparation, gameplanning, fundraising and RECRUITING. Every area in our program may be at an all time high with the exception of recruiting. That falls squarely on our staff, and especially Spurrier and Spurrier, Jr.
I would argue that all in all this is easily the worst recruiting effort in Spurriers tenure. We should be doing much better than we are. This class will be a problem in 3 years.
ADDICTED TO GLOVE!!!!
I share these concerns. A good assessment.
He didnt like many HS linebackers he saw. He was like a lonely guy who had trouble finding dates, holding out for a 10.
Agree with most of what you said and our recruiting this year has been substandard for sure. Much of that has to do with a complete lack of talent in SC, the players the state did produce mostly chose to go elsewhere also. I think we should've taken a smaller class this year so we could load up next year, we're involved with a ton of good players and only going to be able to take 15-17 as things stand today. How much sense does that make when we took a commit from Dallas earlier in the cycle. I know the coaches have forgotten more about football than I know...but.....that's just retarded imo. We need some better recruiters on this staff. I think Sands will be fine and Brown as well. Botkin hasnt done a damn thing so far. I'm starting to think that maybe there was a reason he was coaching in high school last year. We better land a monster class next year or our program will go back to where it was imo.
By all indications, he was slow, if not flat negligent in approving offers. So, that is that.
Ally will beat the crap out of Uga.
Okay, which made LB recruiting even more important this year.
I guess getting Lattimore, Gilmore, Roland, and Clowney makes them not so good recruiters. We used to not get those players. EVERY school is going to have 1-2 two players decommit every year. We have been lucky the last few years to not have that many decommit. Look at other schools. They have players decommitting.....UGA, UF, Bama, AU, and LSU. It's reality that every school will have decommits. We have lost 4 games in two years! We have been one game away from the SEC the last 2 two years. Just because we are not ranked high in the rankings doesn't mean we are not filling our needs. Our staff is not the weakest in the SEC. Could Spurrier be more involved? Yes....but no reason to panic.40 something days till signing day.
Signing the best players in SC has enabled Spurrier to improve the level of our team's play. Clowney and Lattimore are once-in-a-generation players. What happens when they're both gone? What happens if we miss out on the top in-state talent? What happens if the SEC-caliber in SC is thin? If we're going to compete for SEC titles we need to improve our out-of-state recruiting.

Have to agree here.
I think this is exactly what Tony would tell you if he could shoot you straight on this subject.
