The plan is to build for 2017, a retractable-roof stadium, with a potential cost of around $1 billion and would demolish the GA Dome. Wonder if Arthur Blank will try to out-do Jerry Jones on the Scoreboard?
The Georgia World Congress Center Authority board Monday morning unanimously approved terms that are intended to provide the framework for a deal on a new
This is absurd. They want $300 million to be funded by the taxpayers. I've been to the GA dome 5 times in 24 months, there is nothing wrong with it. If the place was a dump it would be understandable. The Falcons are trying to claim a new stadium would draw more fans. Sorry Mr. Blank but you bought a franchise in a city where most sports fans are transient, and you bought a professional team in the college football Capitol of the world. Nobody is spending $100 on a ticket the day after they spent a couple hundred (including travel and tailgate expenses) going to a college game.
Great point Earshot!
I said the same thing after I was in that stadium for the SECCG. There is nothing wrong with it! Their fan base at that stadium is unlike any I've ever seen at college games. There are almost as many opposing fans there as home fans, especially when they play the Saints or Green Bay.
I guess he just wants Authur's Playhouse, so he can compete with Jerry's World.
Win a Superbowl, then we will talk!
They'd be much better served, doing a $100 million renovation funded with revenue bonds, and remarketing the place. Doubt they'd ever get the ACC to agree to it, but I always thought it would be cool to play the ACC Championship on Friday night, followed by SEC game on Saturday in GA dome. I guarantee you, they'd sell more tickets to it than they do right now. Entertainment wise ATL kicks Charlotte's butt.
The stadium is barely 20 years old. It got a bunch of renovations due to the tornado at the SEC basketball tournament a few years ago. Nothing wrong with it at all.
Supposedly, 75% of Atlantans are against this. I think Blank and the Falcons are stuck. No possible way that Goodell would allow them to even threaten moving.
The $300 million is from hotel taxes so not a diect tax to Atlanta residents but money that isn't earmarked for something else. Fans are worried about psl licenses coming into play. The braves are next in line if 20 yrs buys you a new stadium.
Goodell's behind the move threat. He came in for a prime time game a couple weeks back to give a presentation with Blank and the mayor to push the stadium on the city.
And the Braves were forced into a crap tv deal as condition of sale that still has twenty years left. Meanwhile the Dodgers are about get about 20 times what the Braves get.
