I saw something in the "Ask Tony" thread by somebody who was arguing that it was a joke that we have Robbie Liles as our director of recruiting, while Bama signed Kevin Steele. First off, Spurrier Jr is still our RC, and Robbie Liles is our in house RC. Liles is as good at his job as anybody in the country. He is loved by all High Schools, and their coaches, and we could not go out and hire somebody better for any amount of money. He does a job, with raving reviews, that Bama has 5 or 6 guys hired to do. Bama wastes money, and it is a joke that they would hire a coach to do an administrative job.
We should all sleep easy that we have Robbie Liles, because I guarantee you there is no better in the SEC. I'm sure everybody knows that Kevin Steele is going to have no say in who they recruit, and have very little interaction with the recruits. Our coaches go meet players face to face, and that is what recruiting is all about. Liles coordinates all this with the high schools and their coaches. That is what recruiting is going to continue to be.
Ally will beat the crap out of Uga.
How many times a week is Robbie Lyles in touch with Deshawn Hand? How many times does he text Hands coach? I really don't know I'm asking.

Under the rules, is he allowed to be in touch with him?

Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty
He isn't allowed to recruit players. The in house recruiting coordinator handle the schools and the coaches and admin only. Not allowed to deal directly with the athlete in any off campus manner.

It's obvious Spurrier has no clue and our internet posters should be running the show.
Some of you amaze me. Spurrier is one of the most successful coaches in the history of college football and the absolute best in the history of USC. I'm sure he will figure it out and do it the way he wants to do it, without joe blow from bumkuf South Carolina's help.
Please save the "well he could do it better". He does it his way, and his way is good enough for me. And as Tony said it was good enough to kick Saban's azz the last time they met.
Oh great here's the obligatory "Spurrier knows more than you" post.
IT'S A NEW RULE. Spurrier has as much experience with the rule as I do flying a plane
A guy that's never actually signed a recruit, ever. I'm certain that if he's the absolute best in the SEC, that he'll get multiple offers from the high rollers offering them to come handle it at their program. We shall see how many offers roll in.
It's not a matter of 'no say' w/r/t who to recruit. It's about the ability to recruit, sell and help land players once they're on campus. You're trying to land an elite level player. Do you want additional help from a guy that's been in the living rooms of these types of kids before, signed recruits, closed the deal, etc, etc, etc in his previous experience? Or someone who loves the University? Bc I'm sure Baseline Jesus would help ,without pay, if you are just looking for someone that loves USC.
Honestly, do you all know the first damn thing that Robbie Lyles does? He is good. Younger and cleaner version of Clyde Wrenn. He knows what he is doing and does it well.
Kevin Steele having signed recruits has no bearing on this position because he won't be signing any in this role. The real coaches handle that. Steele can't leave campus to recruit kids.
I think some of you are jumping off a bridge without understanding what Lyles does and how much he has meant to our recruiting and HS coach relationships in the past. The guy is good.
Thank goodness Bama as Steele. They may be able to really start recruiting now.
I think you're missing what my position is on this.
I realize he may be good at what he's done. But, this is a new role. This isn't continuing what he's done. If this was only changing titles for current positions, that did the exact same thing, then the NCAA wouldn't have made an announcement on it. It would have simply been 'hey, your title is no longer x, it's y. Your actual duties are no different at all. Only difference here is that you can tell someone that you're now x, instead of y.' The folks in this position can recruit kids while they're on campus. Let me pose it this way - When a guy gets on campus, Would you rather have GA Mangus and a guy that's never been out recruiting kids previously working the kid. OR, potentially GA Mangus and a second guy that can recruit like GA Mangus helping GA Mangus land the kid? I'd rather have a guy that's been thru it and knows how to close a kid. Not a guy that's super friendly with all the SC HS coaches. Liles can continue in his prior role, no? So, let him continue in that role, where you believe he excels, and hire a recruiter to help you recruit.
I really don't think anyone is in any way trying to belittle the job Robbie Lyles does for the University of South Carolina. However he is already on staff. I feel confident that Alabama also has a very competent individual who handles their relations with high school coaches. However with the passage of this new rule Alabama specifically has taken advantage of this by bringing on another individual to help with recruiting. I'm not saying to replace
Lyles in any way, I'm just saying add another member to that part of our support staff
