Tennessee will hire Johnny Chavis as the next head coach and he in turn will hire Kevin Steele to be the defensive coordinator. You heard it here first.
Would be very interesting if that indeed happened. I would think they would need to take the Auburn/Clemson approach then and break the bank for a big name offensive coordinator to come in and run the offense. Then hire a few dynamic recruiters because Tennessee has to be a national recruiting force due to the low number of prospects coming out of the state of Tennessee.

This is the primary reason why SC has eclipsed Tennessee in the top 3 of the SEC East. SC has a huge demographic advantage over Tennessee. Keeping DJ Swearinger, Kelcy Quarles and others that would have gone to Tennessee in the past has been the key to eclipsing UTK and their downfall.
In the past Tennessee has done very well in SC, NC and GA (along with getting prospects from California and other places). With Spurrier, we have locked out UTK in SC. We have also replaced UTK as a go-to destination for recruits from NC and GA.
This is why it is crucial we keep key recruiters on our staff in the next couple of years. Here are the scenarios I forsee with UTK:
1. Break the bank for a name like Lane Kiffin again (one that recruits will like) and threaten our gains in NC and GA, along with potential threats in SC.
2. Hire John Chavis. This will immediately threaten our lock on SC.
3. Hire another failure of a coach, which will probably not threaten our recruiting gains, and hire Peyton Manning down the road (way in the future). This would be a major threat to our recruiting gains.
Whatever happens at UTK, they understand the first step to respectability is to weaken us and/or GA (I don't see how they could weaken UF). They will attempt to par our recruiting gains in recent years. GA Mangus, Lorenzo Ward & Shawn Elliot are crucial for our program going forward. We have been able to mitigate the loss of Jay Graham so far. Hopefully Spurrier and whoever is in charge of the program going forward understand that we must have our strongest recruits in GA, SC and NC; not only to build our team, but to prevent Tennessee from getting key prospects they use to get.
Why is it that Tenn does not have many highly rated recruits? I think Memphis is a hotbed, but that is it, right? Even Memphis is not nearly the gold mine as some cities in Fla, or Atl, though. You would think that there would be great prospects coming out of Knoxville and Nashville. Looking at the map, you would guess Nashville alone would have maybe 2/3 as many prospects as Atlanta, but that is not the case. It is weird.
Is that basketball country? Do they have a lot of basketball recruits there?
Ally will beat the crap out of Uga.
Maybe this is humor and I just missed it, but I'm not sure a gazillionaire would be interested in canvassing the country kissing the backsides of high school coaches and 18 year olds. Plus the hours suck.
The kids in Memphis can't qualify. The high school system is a joke.

Any way to get Jay Graham back on our staff in some capacity?
I like Jay Graham, but that isn't happening sans some turnover in our own staff and I don't see that happening.
Strong would seem the strongest candidate off of JC's list. Cutcliffe was fired from Mississippi for not recruiting well, that puts him down the list at UT-K I'd think. If Cutcliffe had stayed at UT the last time I think Fulmer would still be coaching there, Chavis was a great DC and whenever Fulmer had Cutcliffe he had good offenses and their recruiting was rolling then (most/all top 10 classes).
That's not going to happen. Chavis is not a head coach.
And the last if the hire doesn't happen
According to his sister, Chavis is at his last job unless Fulmer gets back in coaching and that's not likely.
Out of the horses mouth. It is his last job unless the right head coaching job comes along. The Tenn job would be one of the right ones.
I'd be shocked if Chavis was the choice unless they have trouble getting somebody again like they did when they settled for Dooley.
Out of the list above I hope they end up with Strong or Cut.
Gruden might be great or he might not be, but he could be really great. Hope we don't have to find out at an SEC East team.
Petrino is going to go somewhere and win like crazy. I hope it's at Auburn and not UT.
