On the NC State run. Hope y'all are watching.
This post was edited by Pierce211 16 months ago
Fantastic. I don't think people ever really appreciated Jim Valvano as a coach or person until he was gone. People will say he started cheating later on at NC State, but he didn't cheat in '83 and that was one of the best runs in college basketball.
I witnessed the start of it. Best bud is NC St fan and we made our SR HS trip the ACC tourney that year in the Omni(atlanta). I was their to see MJ. He was their for State. State was like a 5 seed and had to win the tourney to get a bid. They beat the Holes(double OT) in semis and UVA(Sampson), ranked #1 and 2 nationally and continued their lucky ass run. They would always get behind, foul the foe who would miss FTs and they would drain three's to catch em in the end. Craziest run I've ever seen. Three guards carried em on a very average squad.
Yea. I was just becoming a sports fan that year(7-8years old). I remember the probation years. First time I new the story. Great to get the ncaa info from the gray haired guy. Missed his name.
I'm ashamed to say it now, but I was 11 or 12 then and was an ACC basketball fan. I pulled for Duke and NC State mostly (don't care for anything ACC now for the record) but remember watching that whole run unfold with my mom, who also loved basketball. It was unbelievable just to get to that final game, and then to win it. 9 straight improbable wins with all but 2 by the skin of their teeth. there will probably never be anything like it again.
Maybe the only close run would be the 2010-2012 yard cocks! Go Cocks!!!!!
One of the best tv shows I've ever seen.
awesome...so well done! gonna certainly watch again when it re airs...
Recorded and I am watching it the second time right now. I swear I can't watch coach V make his famous ESPN speech without tearing up... And what a Great guy Thurl bailey is... Great Great show. If you love basketball you have to Love this show...
was he cheating when he brought chris washburn onto the state campus, he of the sat score so low he only signed his name so low...stole from his teammates..wound up homeless last time i saw
valvano was inspirational re cancer. he was no good coach. he had three future nba stars on that team & lost double digits games.
what did he do before or after that game? nothing. he was a sucky coach but an inspiration for his fight against cancer
he is admirable for that. for hoops not really. a cheat & not a very good coach
i think washburn scored a 400 on the sat. yeah, valvano was a peach
Was holding back tears... Great account of that time.
Just dropped a turd in the punch bowl.
again, i repeat, valvano brings a tear to anybody's eye when he was fighting his disease. brave, courageous, inspirational. all that stuff applied. nobody can say how they would react upon facing such a challenge, not many could be that big a person as he was
but, strictly from a hoops standpoint, i think he was overrated, certainly was not interested in bringing scholar athletes to nc state
google chris washburn. he was a prize recruit for valvano. just happened to be certifiably as dumb as a rock, adept at theft & probably nuts. but he was a baller
it was a cinderella team? whitenberg, charles & another guy off that team all had long nba careers. they were quite talented. the question was why did it take valvano all year to capitalize on great talent?
Yeah, he was awful. He won 2 regular season ACC championships, 2 ACC tourney championships, took State to the NCAA's 7 out of the 10 years he coached there, 2 Elite 8's, 1 National Championship.
And the reason why they lost double digit games in '83 is because Whittenburg had a foot injury the last half of the season, but returned in time for the ACC tourney.
here is a story about how chris washburn took his sat. this is the kind of student athlete nc state was admitting
if people want stone cold druggies who have the mental capacity of a toad on their campus, then get you a valvano & a chris washburn
NC State’s Chris Washburn (pictured left) - the third overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft - talks about his 420 SAT, his battles with drug addiction and why he
this from the la times 1985 reflects nc states high standards for "blue chip" athletes
len bias ring a dingie wingie with anyone? you can have high blue chips that are ticking time bombs on your campus
thanks, on my part, but no thanks.
not hard to win when you can recruit drug addicts thieves & certifiable idiots
North Carolina State freshman basketball player Chris Washburn was admitted to the university with an SAT score far below the school average because he is a school officials
question for the older crowd. Why did they use the 3 point line earlier in the season but then did not in the tourney?
and another....note....he began "experimenting" with drugs...read coke...at nc state but his buddy len bias died, he straightened up for a couple months then
After bottoming out on drugs, former N.C. basketball phenom is clean, sober and starting over in Hickory
Like Carlos Turner and Jason Parker?
I wasn't disputing anything that you wrote. Was merely pointing out what you did.
I think it was an ACC rule that year. If memory serves, it was inside the top of the key. Too easy.

I think it was because the NCAA had not adopted the three (3) point shot as yet?
^^^^^^ This guy is throwing stones about someone's SAT score? The same guy who brought us one liners like..... "he of the sat score so low he only signed his name so low."As well as, "he was no good coach." Last but not least," he was a sucky coach."
I am sure Washburn is the only guy to ever barely make it into school at the D1 level.
when i took the sat i approached it much as chris washburn did....lots of them dots...too many dots....now, if i had been able to circle a,b or c....then i could have finished my paper faster
i got a higher score than washburn cause i could remember my own name
yep, lots of student athletes that caint read rite but can snort coke steal & make some hoops
i did attend the university of sc. i got a degree. that i choose to be annoying is no reflection on my iq, but those who choose to defend drug addicts on campus with the iq of a turnip, i heah you
