I'm a big Frank Martin fan, but I am so frustrated with this program. We have a mid-major roster struggling to compete in probably the weakest "power" conference in the country. Since the early part of the 2009-2010 season (I think) when we lost a couple of starters to injury and discipline, the program has been at best completely stagnant and at worst in a steady decline. I don't know which recruits would've been left out of this current freshman class if Harris and Gill had stayed, but the fact that they bolted is another source of frustration. Horn did such a pathetic job of recruiting in his years at Carolina, and 2 of the very few impact guys he brought in bolted rather than staying around to play for a proven winner.
I know some people love to defend the roster we have right now, me included at times, by pointing out exceptional games that each guy has once a year. However, the fact is we're not very good. Even compared to other mediocre SEC teams like Tennessee, almost every one of our players is undersized for what he's expected to be able to do, except maybe Richardson, and he's undersized in terms of strength. Imagine in a dream world if Ellington was 6'1'', or if Jackson was 6'9'' or if Carrera, with his ridiculously good effort, was 6'8'' or so. However, they aren't, but they are expected to compete against guys who are that size with similar or better talent night in and night out.
I really hope to see marked improvement in the 2013-2014 season. Not necessarily a tourney team, but at least a team that can pull some nice upsets and push towards the 20 win mark and make some noise in the SEC. I have a feeling the new guys next year are going to have some growing pains, but Thornwell and the big guy may really carry us to a new level in 2014-2015. Unfortunately, that just seems like such a long time away.
honestly what more did you expect? Couldn't have been realistic. You really thought Martin isn't a miracle worker. Our men's basketball program will be fine, it will take a few years for him to get his guys but it's going to happen. We had fans ready to give up on Dawn Staley, and now look.
Blame Odom then horn.
My expectations were very low. I know you're not going to waste time looking back for my pre-season comments, but I was hoping we could break even. That doesn't make this season any less frustrating. I still hate losing.
The program was in such bad shape when Coach martin arrived. All I (hopefully many more fans) can do is go and support them till Coach can get players. I still think this is a 3 to 5 year tough job to get us competitive just in the SEC...
Our players are what they are. Let's hope they improve and continue to play hard. Coach Martin and the team really needs our support....
Horn had no problem winning with Odom's players. Then it quickly went downhill when Horn brought in his guys.
I totally agree and thats exactly how I feel its very discouraging to say the least
I blame Dave Odom. Instead of building off Eddie Fogler's success we sunk deeper into mediocrity and we never had a good year under Dave. Even the NCAA tournament year was mediocre to say the least. Dave was supposed to be this veteran basketball expert who promised to turn us around like Wake Forest but he could never quite recruit or develop like he did in Winston-Salem
Odom didn't do as well as we hoped, but nothing about his tenure was embarrassing. Horn allowed us to sink to a laughable level. One good thing did come from this thread though. I know now that in order to post, there is a standard of whether or not it is necessary. Is there a particular person I need to run my opinions by to determine if they are necessary enough to post?
You obviously look at the glass half empty. I'm as excited about the program as I have been since Fogler made a nice run. Martin is doing miracles with very mediocre talent. This team should not be judged by wins and losses, but by effort and fundementals. We have got to catch a break on a few good big guys recruiting.
Quite honestly they've won more than I ever thought they would. This is when I wish gill had hung around. I thing him and carerra would have been a good combo. Maybe helped with a few more wins. Either way I do think we have the right man for the job. And as for horn winning with odom players, really if u put Downey on this team we'd have 5 or 6 more wins in conference.
Me? I'm as optimistic as it comes. I've enjoyed the effort but the results have been frustrating. I'm excited about the future. What's so hard to understand about being impatient and sick of losing?
Amen MCR preach it brother.
It doesn't take a revelation to understand that we have a bad team and to understand the reasons. The way I look at it is that it's going to be fun to watch them get better over the next few years.
Odom was lucky Devon Downey decided to transfer here, other than that he was mediocre. Granted that mediocre is better than what Horn left us with, but neither set the world on fire.
Martin will get it done. Not sure what any of you expected this year.
Devan Downey came here in spite of Odom.
The effort is there-I wish the student body was-Like playing at Dunbar's on Devine
Downey and Buck Fredrick came back to be closer to home.Boy I can't help but think what we might have if Harris,Gill, and Murfee Holloway had stayed.Does anyone know the story with Holloway ?
Nothing is wrong with being frustrated, but is seems odd for it to boil over now. This is what everyone should have expected. Frustration should occur when folks are not meeti expectations.
I think folks are just wondering why it has just now reached this level of frustration. If realistic expectations were had going in, frustration should be low.
Big ups Taco.Every one of these players were solid college ball players, many who went on to pro careers.
