Wow.... Just wow. Give it three years then if were still looking like we don't know how to play the game, then get on coach Martin. The man hasn't even been our coach for one year. You will see marked improvement over time. We have been horrible for quite some time now and NOBODY was going to fix that in season one. I got it, or players are not big enough or as talented as other teams. I have confidence coach Martin will change this. Give the man some time....

Thoughts on Carrera this season vs his career? His ceiling?
JC is correct. I think everybody may be surprised to see how few of the guys on the current roster are going to on there next season. There are going to be some transfers. That is why Martin Spent Saturday night recruiting tow top Florida JUCOs.
We desperately need point guards. I have to question Martins lineup sometimes. We only lose Jackson this year. At least a third of our points need to come from point guards and we are not getting that kind of production. Any college player under six feet needs to be a phenom and ours clearly are not. Martin seems to not be involved as he was at the beginning of the year. Anybody else noticed that?
If by "mid-major" you mean SoCon then I agree with you.
Coach Martin recruited the best player on the team. I believe he's done the same with next year's class. We'll have a winner soon enough. In the meantime we're going to struggle.
Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty

These guys play like freshman and that's the problem. The lack of coaching over the last 4 years is rearing its ugly head and Coach Martin is stuck cleaning up the mess. They are just now being taught the true fundamentals of basketball, running half court sets, screening away from the ball, and defense and they're playing like it. I truly believe that if Frank Martin had been coaching this team from the beginning you would have an entirely different result than what you have right now. But unfortunately you've got upperclassmen like Slawson who still can't properly set a screen and roll. Eric Smith wilts under any pressure and for the life of me I don't understand why he plays as much as he does. Leonard still hasn't found his confidence yet. Bruce plays out of control too much. These are all mistakes that freshmen make.
Hopefully there will be some serious attrition on this team at the end of the year to make some room for some new guys. At this point, you've just got to hit the reset button on the program and rebuild it. Frank Martin is a terrific coach and has a terrific staff so I believe they will get the job done, but it's going to take at least 3 years.
I don't understand how you could have expected us to break even this year. We were 10-21 last year. We won 2 SEC games last year (and barley won them, I believe both went into OT). We lost our best big man and our most promising freshman.
You say you had low expectations but I would say you should have had no expectations. Beating Arkansas by double digits and getting a SEC win on the road this year exceeded my expectations. The last couple of games have obviously brought us back to earth and reality, but the results should not surprise you.
We are all frustrated about the state of our program. I refuse to reserve judgement until Martin starts getting better players. I honestly believe that the backcourt of Johnson and Thornwell will dramatically improve the team. Hopefully we can add another big (Henry) so Carrera can move to SF and only play PF when we want to run a small lineup.
Give it some time. Next year we should set a goal of making the NIT. However, I would not expect 20 wins (and compete to go to the NCAA). Hopefully we can make that a realistic goal in year 3.
Let's say we go 2-6 in our last 8 regular season games. We'd be 14-17 at that point. Potentially we'd end the year at 14-18 or maybe 15-18 if we could win a tournament game. There have been 2 or 3 games that could've gone either way. If those games had gone our way, the record wouldn't have ended up being far off from the break-even point. The season has gone much as I expected, but I hate losing to bad teams, and Tennessee is a bad team. I don't get upset when we lose to Kentucky, Florida, etc.
Our guys can't close. We should have beaten Auburn, Tennessee, and Georgia. But they don't know how to win the last three minutes of a game. Again, part of it is they've been coached so improperly the last few years they panic when the game is on the line, forget their fundamentals, and play recklessly.
First off let me say this is a great thread and alot of good points being made. I may get blessed out for this but I still dont know why brenton williams was not in the game for some three point shooting. They took away our dribble penetration and we couldnt knock down any jumpers to spread the defense. I have been on his side for the most part with matchups on different opponents but not yesterday. If he wasnt in trouble he should have seen some minutes to atleast see if he could knock down a three or two!!!
I totally agree with you frank we have got to learn how to close out in these close games. I think as fans we have a right to be frustrated with our basketball program. I truely believe we have enough talent to win against some of the teams in our league and we cant seem to do it.
Sorry I don't agree but that is fine. We have no depth or size inside. Our guard play is not very good. I share the feeling that Williams is sitting on the bench because he is in the doghouse. I think it is much more important right now to show the team that they will do things the right way or won't play. If we have to sacrifice wins now to build the program the right way, then that is what we have to do. I know it is very frustrating and at the end of the day you are judged by wins and losses. That is why I don't think it is fair to judge this team whatsoever.
