2013 SEC Championship Game: USC v LSU
"You’re either a block-gobbler, a farmer, or you’re a damn hunter and playmaker."
Weren't Gill and Leonard pretty good recruits? How did Odom do with recruiting? Wasn't our major complaint with Odom that he couldn't/wouldn't recruit? I would say based on facts that Horn and his current staff have done a much better job of recruiting than the previous coaching staff. There is no reason to replace the entire staff for recruiting purposes when we are now signing better player than we have in the last decade. Now we could argue that the recruiting philosophy should change, meaning we go after a different type of player than we have been. But what everyone forgets so quickly is that coaching USC basketball is a very tough job. Since leaving the ACC we haven't established sustained success but we complain like we have a program with great history and that a coach should automatically come on and win. Heck, Spurrier didn't start winning big in football until what yr in his tenure? And our fans were ready to get him out of here.....and he is arguably one of the greatest coaches of all time. My point is, we (USC fans) and past administrators have always been in the wrong mindset always feeling that we need to hire a big name and if that coach doesn't win big quickly then he should be fired, rather getting a coach in to build a team and work his system/scheme. That plan has failed over and over, and is a major reason football and basketball haven't ever sustained success. On the other hand baseball has had more consistency with coached and has sustained success and now has reached the level of being an elite program. So let's quit being fickle fans and beleiving that coaching basketball at USC is an easy job and wanting to change coaches every 3-4 yrs. If they all have different coaching schemes and recruiting philosophies we'll never have a winning program.
