Costen beat the throw

  • I may have been blinded by the light from wearing my garnet colored glasses but after watching several replays of costen's slide into third, it appeared the tag was laid right in his face and I swear his hand hit the bag before shaffer's glove tagged costen's face.

Of course I might have been visually impaired from the Courvoisier and wearing my I hate clemnuts glasses.

  • I thought he was easily out.

  • The throw was defiantly there in plenty of time - it just didn't appear to me that the tag was laid on his hand or arm as he slid into the bag, It really seemed his face slid into the glove. But you may be right.

  • Regardless, it was a mistake to go for third IMHO. I don't know if he was waived on or did it on his own, but he should have been held at second.

  • It's sort of an understood in baseball, when the ball beats you that badly and the glove is waiting on you, unless it is just blatantly obvious, you are out. Period.

  • That's baseball.......when the ball beats you to the bag, very rarely does an umpire call anything other than out.

  • why run yourself into an out is the bigger question here. he was already in scoring position at second. a basehit scores him from second just as easily as third. You never run yourself into an out at third base.

i agree with you john. shaffer hit coston in the face after his hand was already on the bag. i'm sure it was a bang bang play though. hard to call.

I agree the throw was there, and it was maybe a bad decision. However, I am with Mr. Hunt here, I encourage all of you to watch it again. He appears to be safe, Schaffer has to make the tag, no matter how early the throw was, unless they changed the rules.

No matter. We won the series.

Ally will beat the crap out of Uga.

  • Couple of quick points-

The throw beat him but Shaffer did not tag him before he got to the bag. Horrible job of getting the tag down, always take the tag to the bag. Regardless 99 out of 100 umpires will call them out if the throw beats the runner.

Never make the first or last out of an inning at 3rd. Don't make the first out at home as well. I believe this was the 2nd out.

As for if he was sent or not. Most coaches will leave it up to the runner to advance to 3rd if the play is out in front of them. Not sure how we coach that.

  • where did you watch thr replays?

  • I'm ok with taking a little bit of a chance getting to third with one out.

  • The ball beat him, the tag was bad which is why TJ protested though not a lot to his credit. I don't blame him for running simply because what I saw out of the Brittle one on Sat if I had that kind of speed I'd have gone too. Brittle's arm seemed to be below average to me, and I don't think his throw to the cutoff man was exceptional. Stolz had a real good relay and it took that to get TJ. Over aggression can be calmed down easier IMO than teaching a guy who is too passive to be more aggressive whether it be at the plate, on the bases or in the field. JMO

  • I have a photographic mind - I've replayed that play dozens of times - - - just kidding

ESPN3 has the replay of the game - I've watched that play more times than I can count with and without the benefit of my Gamecock glasses and my Courvoisier.

Clearly the ball gets to Shaffer in time and he sticks his glove straight out, Costen slides straight at the bag arms extended. Costen's hand is on the bag as his face slides into Shaffer's glove.

Shaffer never lays down a tag on his hand or his arm - he doesn’t swipe a tag either.

Oh well, comme ci, comme ça ... to quote Meat Loaf, Two out of three ain't bad.

This. It doesn't matter that he got under the actual tag - you are gonna get an out call every time there

This i what I saw live as well and did not feel the need to watch it again. I've watched a good deal of baseball and I'm not so sure that 9 of 10 would call the out if they did indeed see what I saw. Now if they swipe and miss, then maybe, but there was no swipe. Maybe 50/50, just because they miss it, but not 9 of 10. He was safe.

  • Honestly with the new super slo-mo cameras, we are seeing that umps miss a lot of calls that "appear" to be out, but are not. Like some others here are saying.... as a general rule, if the balls beats the runner the out is called, even though the reach around beats the tag.

I'm only trying to point out the way I saw it - I'm not trying to kick dirt on the umpire’s shoes. You, as are several others on this thread, are absolutely correct. He was out and 9 out of 10 times would probably get no reprieve from the umpire since, like the pope, they are infallible on judgment calls...just ask jim joyce.
