There is no "gamble" at this point. Spurrier is playing with house money, so to speak.

Ward has to coach the bowl. That's as simple as it gets.

If Ward's gameplan pans out in the bowl, why wouldn't that warrant serious consideration?

A different "DC" brings a different philosophy, a different mindset in terms of recruiting, and a different personality as it relates to players.

Wards resume isn't anything to sneeze at so I think it's pretty sad that some of these posters are discounting him along the lines of a second-rate coach.

I don't think one game is nearly enough to prove whether Ward is ready to be an SEC Defensive Coordinator or not. And let's face it... Nebraska's offense doesn't exactly strike fear into anyone. Especially their passing attack. They are hardly what I would call a challenging audition for the role and quite frankly we should be able to shut them down on talent alone. That won't be the case against UGA, Arkansas, or other teams with a decent offense.

  • This move makes sense if SOS wants Jr. to be the HC when dad retires.

The rug really tied the room together, did it not?

I'm sure Hyman has chimed in on saving $$$ and not making a bigtime hire. Looks like we go back to "5 loss Spurrier" and more bowl trips to Shreveport in our future.

So much for our short lived run of major success in the SEC.

    Merry F#%@ING Christmas Gamecock Nation.

Why does everything go back to Hyman for you Cockfather? Respect you as a poster and appreciate your info, but it seems you have some axe to grind.

We may even still decide to hire Stoops. I think the direction will be crystal clear following the bowl game performance.

Well our D under EJ didn't exactly shut arky or uga down, so not sure of your point here?

  • one thing to think about is if we hire stoops then i would bet ward would be gone. same type of coach as they are both DB type coaches. Ward has been the sole reason we are going to have a top class this year with what he has done in atlanta, if he is the DC it will get even better when he is on the road.

Im still with going with Smart and giving him a coach in waiting title.

I think Ward will do a good job

He might, but we know Stoops will. Why have the uncertainty with the future of the strength of our team when we can have a nearly seamless transition?

And EJ had such great success against UGA and Arkansas this year.

Really respect Spurrier's loyalty to his staff. I think Ward deserves the audition. Like it or not, he is critical to this year's recruiting class. He deserves a look.

And stop with the Hunt comparisons. Ward has proven to be a far superior coach to Hunt.

I loathe the mercenary culture in college football. I would be happy with Stoops, but it is doubtful he would be here long term since he sees the SC job as the quickest path to becoming a HC again. And after his tenure at Arizona I am not sold on him as a good option to replace Spurrier.

    Agree 100%

Stoops would be on everyone's shortlist of HC opportunities in 2 years if he has similar results to what EJ had.

While EJ was a good coach, the position coaches are the guys on the ground, responsible for developing talent, recruting good fits, and building relationships.

I think, from a recruting standpoint, Ward would be a HUGE shot in the arm on the defensive end.

  • I'M NOT BUYING IT.

I have no doubt HBC wants to see what Ward can do. However, giving the keys to Stoops w/o giving Ward something of a chance would be an insult to Ward. HBC knows he needs to keep Whammy on staff as a coach and recruiter. He's a good coach and a very good recuiter. So he gets his chance. But, I think HBC simply wants all the Stoops talk to die down for now. If Whammy blows us all away in the bowl game then who amongst us could be too upset at him taking the reigns? If not, then it's easier to hire Stoops.

  • Holy schnikies! I had no idea we had so many experts on here with D-1 BCS head coaching expereince. Do we have as many experts in the insurance defense law paractice? I have three reports that need to go out to carriers before the office closes at noon tomorrow. If you would like to assist, please PM me. Please do the same to Coach Spurrier if you would like to assist him in hiring a D Coordinator. I suspect that our responses will be about the same, except that he is more of a gentleman than I so his first two words are not likely to beging with an F and an O.

  • You guys are making assumptions about why Stoops may not be here. How do you know Hyman won't pay? What if Stoops doesn't want to come here? What if SOS told him he had to keep the defensive assistants we already have and Stoops balked?

All I'm saying is you all are coming up with reasons to bitch b/c that's what you do. I'm sure SOS will not purposely sabotage the program.

  • It may still work out, but I think our fans are more impressed with the name Stoops than his actual coaching.

Also, he is a risk to bring into a high profile job on the personal side. If you all thought what Mangus did was a bit bad, Stoops has done worse.

I don't know that I am a fan of the Ward move (and don't know that I am not), but I wasn't as impressed with Mike Stoops as others seemed to be.

Proven? Did you watch his Arizona teams, not a lot of defense there. Hey he was a good DC and probably still is, but giving Ward an audition isn't crazy, and given SOS and Stoops are friends wouldn't you think SOS would have a better read on how to play this with him than we do?

You just lost all credibility by bringing up his stint at Arizona. Arizona has never fielded a good team..ever. You try fielding a decent team with the talent they recruit. And he was a HC there..not a DC. Before he went there he was recognized as one of the hottest DC's in the nation. Link to Arizona's current class..how could you win successfully with this in the Pac 12?
