Derek Watson, Summers, and Lattimore

  • if Watson and Summers had the work ethic, character, drive and heart that Lattimore had which one would of been the best of the 3 IYO?

    00Ws6

  • Lattimore

    ehood1984

  • Same character and work ethic then Watson would be the best. His natural speed and ability to catch the football paired with Marxus' heart, team minded attitude and work ethic and you would've had the best college football player since Bo Jackson or Herschal Walker. Just my opinion. Arguments could be made for all three. All three had the chance thank goodness Marcus is capitalizing.

  • Lat is the best with intangibles and such. Lat could have posted gaudy numbers this year if healthy. Kid takes responsibility for a freak accident. Best rb I've ever seen, all things considered.

  • Three incredible athletes. Gotta go with Lattimore but it's not by much! Marcus is an All-American football player and All-World person!

  • Watson had speed with decent vision

Summers had moves with great vision

Lattimore has great vision and stamina and instinct . The only thing he lacks is speed... But I'm not sure he needs it.

I'm a huge Watson fan ( with a football in his hands period) but latt is just such a beast

Oh yeah. Mike Davis has a chance to be in this post in a few years

  • What if Clempson would have beaten us the past three year? There are no what ifs. Latti hands down is the best back of the three and it's not even close.

  • value what you have now. so thankful to have Marcus Lattimore.

The thing is Watson or Summers didn't have work ethic and that described who they were as a person. Lattimore has great work ethic and great character. You cant teach work ethic and character. My point is Summers or Watson would have never been successful because they didn't have either. Look at Ryan Brewer. Great work ethic and character. He was a better athlete than Watson and Summers could have ever been.

I will take hard work ethic and great character in any player over those 2 hyped players. Thats what makes USCs football prigram today. Look at Ingram, Taylor, Shaw, etc. They all work their butts off and are successful.

  • Ryan Brewer.... A better athlete than Summers and Watkins? Not even close. More heart... More coachable... More desire... Yes. But better athlete? Let's get real.

Ryan Brewer is one of my all time favorite because he left everything on the field but a better athlete than those two? I have to agree.. Not hardly.

Marcus has some moves too. I have been gawking at some of his runs on youtube, and some of them he is running right at the camera. His cuts are sudden and explosive.

Derek Watson was big and fast, and a phenominal athlete. He was also Mr. Basketball. I think Latt's vision, power, explosiveness, and moves still give him the nod.

Watson was not nearly as powerful of a runner as he looked like he should be. Summers was great at reading blocks and had moves, but not in the same league as Latt.

    I totally agree

I will take Latt all day long!

Most important part of your post is about Watsons power . He did lack In that department

Latt is a stud and I wouldn't trade him for any player in the country . Lattes cuts and cut backs are very impressive . He also has crazy legs on occasions ala sweetness

  • Lattimore
Summers (A lot of people forget that there was a debate who was better LT or Meat)
Squeaky (He never met a spin move in the backfield that he didn't like, or two or three)

    fleurdicock

  • Great question...I think a pro scout would say all would have been first round pics but maybe DS had the most tools..Hard to mark down the other two if they had work ethic of ML..

    87uscfan

  • Squeaky. He was something special with the ball in his hands. The kickoff return against Georgia where he made a full speed spin move without breaking stride was a sight to behold.

  • Watson pretty much got the most out of his talent. The idea he was a bust has never made sense to me. He lead the sec in all purpose yardage. In the end he was excellent college player but was not really a strong pro. With better character he might have hung around the league but he got most of what he had to get, IMO.

Summers did absolutely nothing and was one of the best players in the sec. IMO, he had the most raw talent.

You mean a more successful athlete because of his work ethic, right?

Nobody is going to say Brewer was not a good athlete, I don't think. The things he was able to do against SEC competition was stuff only great athletes do. He had whatever it is that great college players have inside of them that overcome a lot of physical limitations.

Brewer is one of my all-time favorites also, and one OSU and the Big Ten missed on. Skip said that after he went up to scout him, his coach was so excited that a school actually came to see him. Skip said his coach would not shut up about Brewer, said he would guarantee he would be a starter. After that, and watching Brewer live, we gave him an offer, and the rest is history.

All that given, he is not the athlete that Watson or Summers was, but I don't think you were talking about talent. Brewer was someone a coach could not keep off the field.

  • Watson seemed to have alot of lost yards, dancing in the backfield trying to find a hole. Latt rarely has any lost yardage. Loved to watch Watson get into the open field, but Latt is just the total package and never wears down.

  • Kind of a oxymoron question. We will never truly no the answer.. because of Watson's work ethic and mental state was always in doubt. So there is really no way to judge how far Derrick would have taken his game in college ball. He truly was his on worst enemy. Derrick was one talented player though. I do think Lattimore has better hands out of the backfield and that is a big separation IMO. I do think that is also why the mock drafts like him so much.

Agreed, if those two had his will and determination they would be playing on Sunday.

  • Lattimore first, squeaky second then summers. Squeaky was quick, elusive, and had a second gear. Guy returned kickoffs for us

Lol... If Squeaky(as you call him) could ever hit a hole the right way he'd be one of the best Gamecock running backs ever. I know Daccus Turman isn't close, but I loved his style. And, to be honest, Kenny Irons was my favorite before he transferred.
