Watch one of the last weeks post practice interviews on GC online with coach Spurrier. He mentions that Alshon is going to replace Kenny as he is looking up there, and he pauses, you can tell Kenny's death affected the HBC. I think he really liked #11. He will make sure he is honored, I hope. Kenny is the only former receiver that I hear him use as an example for his new guys, he has said it in interviews, and a couple of times on the S. Spurrier show.
Kenny seemed like such a happy guy, I was shocked when I heard about that. He would have ended up starting for Denver, he had whatever great players have inside them that overcomes all else.

I think we have two honors: Career marks that move and retired numbers. I think with retired numbers you have to recieve national player of the year to be automatically considered (Texas does this).
We honor him for two reasons, the outstanding contributions he made to the team and university and because he is no longer with us. We aren't honoring him because he took his own life. You are being harsh and you sound uneducated on the topics of depression and suicide when you make this arguement.
I think if alums want to make donations to create a statue of our past greats in the new tailgate park, then I think that would be warranted. We as alums can do this and I would be all for it.

Allow me to probably get down voted a ton and say what I'd bet several who've read this post have thought. I'm sure we'll see Alshon up there by August. As for KM, I don't see any reason why we should honor him. He's our second leading career receiver and we don't honor any other second leaders in the stadium that I know of for that purpose. So why else would we honor him? Because he's dead? If so, then we honor him because he took his own life leaving a son to grow up without a father? Might seem harsh but it's the truth. I'm sure he struggled with depression and, certainly, that's no small matter, but many former great Gamecocks have struggled with similar issues and many former Gamecocks have died tragically but that doesn't mean we highlight them. I understand the desire to remember someone but in this case, with a suicide, I think it's misguided and sends the wrong signal to our young people and to others dealing with the same issues.

If dying and being good, but not the best, are the reasons why we put up plaques and signs to honor former players then we'd run out of space quickly as would every university. Should we also keep Morrison up even after Spurrier passes him because he was pretty good and died? Dying should have nothing to do with it, and especially with the way he died, it sends the wrong message. Take your own life and be celebrated. How messed up is that? You're trying to seperate the death and the way the death happened. I understand that but good luck with explaining that to kids and to others who don't know anything about KM.

He holds the record, he keeps the sign. Plain and simple. That said, if his record gets beat, they should still do something for him. Doesn't have to be on the ramp, but something.
This got me thinking, what if 21 doesn't set any records? You'd almost have to make one up for him.

Did Alshine replace Kenny McKinley on the stadium ramp?
