Dirtiest NFL plays.

  • Jim McMahon was on 'outside the lines', showed that play against the Packers. Martin picked him up from behind and planted him on his head, after the play. He was unconscious. I remember watching that game, I still don't know what dude was thinking.

    I have Stingley's football card. Sadly, one of the players who is remembered for that tragic play far more than his play prior to the awful injury.

    Kind of like how Jim Marshall is remembered far more for his wrong way fumble return to his team's endzone than his 4 Super Bowl trips, Pro Bowls, etc. Of course, the Stingley remembrance is much more tragic.

    I remember it well also.. and that game was was played in 1986, that was twenty six years ago. I watched it with my Grandfather who was a huge Packers Packers fan. How old are you again?

    While Haynesworth is dirty I personally believe that he is no where on the same planet with Tatum....I remember plays where Tatum would knock out players and stand over them and laugh..........

Stingly ducked his head which is what caused the injury. Not a dirty play by Tatum in my opinion. The injury was horrible, sure, but that doesn't mean the hit was dirty.

    My post wasn't about it being such a dirty play, as it was to comment on the outcome of it in relation to DS. It was the first time in my life I'd personally seen someone's normal life come to an end doing something like playing sports, which until then, had never really crossed my mind. I was young and of course have seen lives come to an end in the sporting arena, but the fact someone could actually become paralyzed on a play in a sport I loved was an awakening for me.

    If it was not meant as a dirty hit then why did Tatum not ever walk over to DS as he was being carted off the field to check on him.....that was the type of player tatum was in MHO

    I doubt you'll get an answer from him on this. He's the type of person that's seen/done everything in his life. He says he's in college yet he remembers watching a game from 26 years ago. I'm not saying a 35-40 year old couldn't be a full time student at USC now but I just think it's highly unlikely he's one of them.

    I was born before 1980 and after 1970, put it that way. I am not yet 'over the hill'. I went through some things, and went back to school in my 30's. All good, better late than never, right? Fortunate enough to be at USC during the best season in history, so I cannot complain about that.

    I was actually at that game. I was 10 years old. I thought there was going to be a riot.

    That was exactly what I thought when I saw it. Was a penalty called on the play? I think the result and Tatum's reputation combined for the perfect storm. Was a ban-bang play, and Tatum didn't lead with his head.

    Definitely was a dick thing not to go check on him. Heartbreaking result, no doubt.

    The bad part for most was it was a preseason game and he never apologized. The hit itself - not dirty.

    Who was Tatum's position coach in college, who also convinced the head coach to move him fro RB?

    If he stays healthy, I have a feeling Nick Fairley will be one to watch, also. Great players he and Suh, but have proven they have no problem ending someone's career without hesitation.

    I went through some knucklehead stuff when I was younger, got back to USC in my 30's. All good. I got to be at USC during the best season in history. The buzz around campus was audible. Better late than never, right?
