I would bet anyone that makes disparaging remarks overall about JRZ has never been anywhere other than Newark Airport and the surrounding 20 mile area which is all very industrial.

I personally left for a few reasons- exorbitant property taxes (paying 22k a year), commute to NYC after I moved out was killing me, and after suffering my brain aneurysm in 2003 moving South was just an easier lifestyle.

The towns, the food, and most but not all of the people are great. Of course the average person was there for 2 days to visit a corporate center and didn't see "JRZ". There is a reason the state has more wealth than anywhere else in the US.

"New Jersey has some of the nicest beach towns in the entire United States and beaches are only rivaled on the East Coast by Hatteras".

Wow, what an interesting statement. Admittedly, I've never been to the Jersey shore, but for a state that is known for it's
wide and beautiful beaches from North Myrtle to Charleston, Hilton Head, and Kiawah, i think you would find a lot of disagreement, and not just from South Carolinians.

If by state pride you mean the sort of xenophobic superiority complex concerning arbitrary boundaries concieved by god knows who several hundred years ago that you display, I'd agree that I have none of that--but I can't agree that it's not retarded.

  • I sent him to Yesterday's. He dug that.

Wow. You must not live in Columbia, Duck.
Unless you were sending him to a dump on purpose. Who wants to eat food straight out of a can in a place infested with roaches and dirt caked on everything??

Last time I ate there I was under a ceiling tile covered in black mold.

    That place is a joke.

I grew up in Spring Lake, NJ. My Grandmother moved from Harvey Cedars to Kiawah in 1976. My Dad's Mom is from Lavallette. My parents had a place in Hilton Head in Evian until 1999. I live in IOP.

I think I am without a doubt a person who can directly tell you that if they disagree they have never been to JRZ.

The beaches and beach towns in JRZ are like I said some of the best in the US. Outside of having to pay for badges to get on the beach (they use the money for daily clean up) they are great.

Our beaches here in IOP and Sullivans are nothing close. Sand isn't fluffy...beaches at high tide are 20 yards. Folly is hard sand etc.

I promise you, you are doing yourself a disservice by not getting out there.

This was for quick local fare. Not Motor, Saluda's or Mr. Friendly. I think Yesterday's is pretty decent for general cooking. No different than Harpers or CA Dreaming or Blue Marlin to me.

I have a pretty good grasp on Cola food. Outside of 6-8 restaurants most of it is just average.

You might be right about Jersey beaches but comparing Harpers to Yesterday's is just plain ludicrous!

I work with a guy who cooked at Yesterdays. I can't even tell you how disgusting the place is. Lizards thicket also cooks canned food but i would go there before Yesterday's.

Yesterday's gets mentioned by out of towners more than locals. Most locals know better.

Yeah but would you compare Pizza Man to Blue Marlin? Of course not! Haha

I expect a small hole in the wall pizza joint to be like that but the management at Yesterday's has to be pretty horrible to allow a place to get that dirty.

I almost walked out the last time I was there. How can you not replace a ceiling tile RIGHT ABOVE A TABLE that is covered in nasty black mold?????

There is just no defending that.

I have never seen anything like that at Pizza Man.

Literally the dumbest thing people complain about all the time. Seriously, who cares if lots of Ohioans move to SC? How does that affect you??? Regionalism is so thoroughly retarded.

Guess you do not live in an area with lots of FIFO's do you?

I think Pizza Man and Blue Marlin are both casual dining, just different levels of casual.

  • Grookie. You are the master of the fine arts. I worked at Dreamin' in college roaches were all over. Blue Marlin...food has sucked since the fire. Don't let the prices fool you. I see you are back to being your typical way again.

Do I live in Cola? No.

My top 3 places to eat in Cola are Motor Supply, Solstice, and Ristorante Divino.
Do those work for you? Is that good enough grasp on Columbia food?

I guess at 2:30 on a Saturday when all the Buckeye's were planning on meeting in Five Points I should have suggested another place. I gave them Yesterday's and the Publick House. It will be alright man.

Blue Marlin lowers their lights and you sit in booths that remind me of what I could probably find at Rustler Steakhouse. Their Calamari comes from a bag..their she crab soup is a liquid bag that is warmed...their shrimp and grits is no better than what someone could get at the Noisy Oyster or AW Shucks here in Charleston. Just because you pay 19.95 for it doesn't make it good. Maybe Brian Dukes has fooled you but he hasn't me.

Publick house would have been a good choice. Maybe you will get it right next time.

I could point out lots of problems with this state...no state is perfect. I try to base comments in my life off of real world experiences rather than hearsay and limited interaction...if you don't you look ignorant.

Jersey Shore is an unfortunate conception that MTV hit a homerun with. It has little to do with New Jersey as that is not life.
3/4 of the cast weren't from NJ when the show started. Real Housewives-correct me if I am wrong is in 5 different locations, NJ wasn't the original.

JRZ is great state as is SC. Instead of talking out what you don't know maybe you should go experience it for yourself.

When I was with my former corporation, I was relocated to NJ for a little over 6 months to study industrial polymer applications. The company I was employed with had expanded to open a polymer division, and the individual that they hired to be the new Polymer Division president (he was extremely well known and respected in the field, and most probbably one of the top 5 guys in the world at what he did) was an older gentleman who agreed to come to work for my ex-corporation because of the lure of decreased travel, stress, and to be able to spend more time with his growing family. I was chosen to study arnd learn under his mentorship in NJ, & then return to my home territory - I was stationed in the New Orleans\Baton Rouge areas back at that time. Again, because of his want to be at home with his family most nights. He lives in Bergen county NJ, near the NJ/NY state lines. As a side note; he had a small laboratory building on his property where we often times worked, and he introduced me to his neighbor, Phil Simms- now sports commentator and former NFL QB. During those months I stayed at a hotel in near-by Parsippany New Jersey. I had always heard stories of how deeply dislike - even hate, bias, cynicism deliberate blatant rudeness ran when it came to folks born south of the Mason-Dixon line when an individual ventured north. This was on my mind, especially when the airliner was decending on Newark.
I am happy to say that all the worry was for naught. People there were genuine and curteous, even after learning I was born and raised a Southerner. I found this to hold true all the way from the hotel maids and staff, waiters and waitresses, even to the presidents/vice presidents of industries we visited to bring Power-Point sales presentations, or even unannounced "cold-calls"...
This, of course, is simply one mans experence over a course of half a year spent in and around the Garden State. Certainly, of course, other individuals mileage may vary; however, for me it was a pleasant experence, and would have no qualms about visiting, or even relocating should a business opportunity arise...

Part of that is just your perspective I guess, but I'll certainly take you at your word that they are great beaches. I for one, prefer hard sand beaches for walking and biking. I know many others do to.
I think that is an attraction for many tourist, at least that is what they say. Many love the white and fluffy sands of the Florida Panhandle area, but hate trying to walk in it. Biking is nearly impossible. Fluffy sand is good for looks maybe, but that's about it. Walking up and down a beach is a favorite past time for many.

Beach width can vary greatly up and down the coast of SC due to coastal topography. I'm sure that has to be true to some extent in NJ. North Myrtle and Pawley's are known for their wide beaches, but they too get pretty narrow at high tide. If NJ beaches are laid out in a way that they don't get narrow at high tide, that's great and unusual. I think most can adapt to 6 hour tidal swings. I love Charleston, but I agree that they don't have the best beaches that SC has to offer. That's just a small part of the SC coast, though. That's what I mean by perspective , you grew up with the fluffy, I didn't. Same could be said for Hatteras, I guess. I think you should consider that when making a blanket statement about there being no comparison. I think we're all prejudiced towards what we grew up with.
I think it is safe to say from a nationwide tourist standpoint, SC beaches are clearly preferred to NJ and NC. The vacation mass exodus in the Summer goes North to South not vice versa, as i'm sure you know. I think that also
represents a better overall and unbiased perspective.

Of course, but even if I hadn't, that wouldn't change the facts about the beaches and their differences, and
the subjectivity of personal preference, perspective, and prejudice.

I've seen enough of your post that I know you love the place even if the beaches aren't your type.
Charleston is a great place. I wish i could spend more time there.
I will add NJ beaches to my bucket list.

    Nice pictures btw.
