Has any team ever made 10/13 sweet 16's in any sport?

  • I read here today that Carolina baseball has made 10 of the last 13 Super Regionals and wondered, has any college team in any sport ever had a run of 10/13 finishing in the top 16 in the country? Tennessee women's basketball? UCONN women's basketball? Alabama football in the 70's? UCLA basketball in the 70's?

I think some people have gotten spoiled over the past few years and almost take making the Super Regionals for granted. If you were watching CBS sports this past March and some announcer said, "XYZ has just made the Sweet 16 for the 10th time in the past 13 years" it would really sound like an accomplishment.

I hope everyone realizes what kind of accomplishment this is and what an asset Ray Tanner is to our school. I'm sure there are a lot of great coaches in the history of college sports in this country that can't claim 10 of 13 top 16 finishes.

  • 1. Tennessee women's basketball had 23 consecutive sweet 16's.

    2. UCLA men's basketball made 10 consecutive Final Fours and won 7 straight National Championships.

    3. UCONN women's basketball has made 5 consecutive Final Fours twice and won 3 straight national championships

    4. Alabama football has 31 ten win seasons, appeared in 59 bowl games, and won every SEC championship in the 1970's except 1970 and 1976. I couldn't find their finish in the polls every year without doing 3 hours of research.

These "legendary programs" should give you something to compare Carolina baseball to.

  • Unfortunately, I read that FSU is going to their 12th Super Regional this year. By the way this year marks the 14th Super Regionals (they started in 1999).

Of course, FSU has choked and lost a bunch of Super Regionals on their field, and they have never won the CWS in their 20 trips over the years.

We didn't make it to the Supers in 1999, but as mentioned above, this year marks our 10th time in the last 13 years.

  • In the era of the super regionals we have a very strong argument that we are the most successful team. In the 13 years they have been in place we have played in a regional all 13 years, we have made the super regionals 10 of 13 years and have made it to Omaha 5 times (soon to be 6).

In our trips to Omaha we have won the national championship twice and finished as national runner up once. We also have 5 seasons of 50 or more wins in that period and own the record for the most consecutive wins in the postseason.

Basically since the start of super regional play we are the baddest SOB's on the planet when it comes to college baseball.

  • I hate the school, their fans, and their athletic programs, but no one has dominated in Division I like UNC women's soccer. From 1982 - 2003 they won 17 championships, were runners up 3 times and in the final four the other 2 times.

  • the arrogant trademark goons won five cws titles in a row. and, i really hate em for it. my bucket list includes beating these guys in any sport and at every opportunity. but taking them to the woodshed in baseball would satisfy me most since they challenged the use of our logo.

  • UNC basketball went to many sweet sixteens in a row. I don't know how many, but the number is significant.

My UNC friends used to remind me of this each year. While I hate UNC, the accomplishment was significant.

Another record to look up is Arkansas' track record. They won something like 13 out of 17 national championships in indoor and outdoor track. It is an amazing record.
