Heard a tater assistant baseball coach this morning with Plyler

  • he says they are very confident they can take the series this weekend. Of course, I would be disappointed if my team was confident....I don't have a problem with that talk. But some of the details.

Their plan is to swing early against Roth. Apparently the Roth style is called a soft throwing lefty. The key is to swing early when he is throwing strikes. If he gets ahead of you in the count...he will own you. So, they are hoping for the wind to be blowing out and to hit some gappers.

The coach talked like they have had a lot of success against Price. I don't keep up with it close enough to say one way or another. Their scouting reports are that Price is not throwing as hard as last year. Which makes sense because he has to pace himself as a starter. But the tater coaches believe Price was the best closer in college baseball. Looking forward to facing him as a starter. Hope they continue their Proce success.

They think Holmes is our best starter. Are glad they are facing him at their place.

The coach specifically said it was good that they do not have to prepare for the 2 sidearm pitchers we had. He talked about how difficult Taylor and Matta were to face and are glad those guys are gone.

  • They knocked Price around pretty good last year, but he finished the year much better than he started.

I have to laugh at the comments on Roth, and the fact the he said anyone other than Roth was our best starter. If it was so simple to figure out this "soft throwing lefty," then someone would have done it by now. It's not like the beginning of last season where people are wondering if his dominant performances against UCLAand Clem were kind of flakey; he has had dominating performances for a whole season to the tune of the best ERA in America.

People always want to discount the guys that don't have the best arm and dont want to believe it when those guys shut them down, but Roth has proven he can pitch and everyone knows that is more important than lighting up the radar gun.

  • I know we have Beaten them in OMAHA and We won the series last year. I just get confused though why our fans act like its automatic to beat them? Clemson has a really good program and pretty solid history. Do i think we are better yes! Do I think J Legg is an *** yes! But I also understand the game of Baseball. They have good players and So do we. I am very confident that we win the series because of our pitching staff, but I dont believe its a foregone conclusion that we do. That is why this is the best rivilary in the country. Every year the teams are pretty even talent wise.

Who said it was automatic? Don't see that anywhere.

i think clemson has had good teams in the past. but i don't think they are that good this year. heck, they've already lost 2 games. i was worried about them coming to our super regional last year. but they got beat at home by uconn, and really, we handled uconn without much trouble. uconn kept it close and exciting until the end of games. i will be disappointed if we don't sweep clemson. but we will see. i am really looking forward to this weekend.

  • That "soft lefty" has whipped their arse the last two years. Price, his velocity was down last year from the year before. I hope it is not down further this year. He looked pretty good last weekend. He started hitting mid 90's late last year during the post-season but for most of the year, he was a 90-91mph guy....which ain't to shabby I might add.

  • I always viewed Roth as a Greg Maddux type pitcher. Crafty, good stuff, control. He didn't throw 100 mph but he's a sure fire HOF. MooU shouldn't discount Roth because he's not flaming it in over 90 mph.

  • yes, the assistant is former tater tot, Mathew Lecroy. He is on with plyler every Thurs. morning. Sometimes its pretty interesting and supposedly he is a good recruiter and is concentrating on the State of SC because they are so tired of losing 90% of the home state talent to Tanner, Holbrook, and company. Good luck with that. Anyway, you can tell that our baseball program has really gotten in their heads because he takes shots at us regularly. For example....one day they were talking about Doug Kingsmore stadium and Lecroy proceeds to say that he thinks its the best stadium around for college baseball. He said "some of the newer stadiums around here have more of a minor league feel than college feel and that tater stadium has more of a college feel and thats why its the best". Then one time he said their ultimate goal was to also win a National Championship in baseball.....but that they weren't going to do it at the expense of ruining the arms of their pitchers. Another attempt at some sort of shot at us, I guess. Anyway, I hope we beat their brains in this weekend so that we can be in their heads even more than we already are.

Maddux threw mid 90s for a good part of his career.

This is not accurate. He topped out around 93 early in his career and that number steadily declined from year to year.

Looking at Roth on TV, you would think that your team could hit him. When you get down to it, even when he is throwing strikes early in the count, he has such good movement on his pitches, and disguises them so well, he may as well be throwing behind you. Like a lot of things in life, getting hits off of Roth is easier said than done. I am with Whittle on the 'soft throwing lefty' thing. His fastball will get into the mitt pretty quick. Combine that with his off speed stuff, and he may as well be throwing 90's.
As far as Holmes goes, I made a comment to my buddy last weekend that he looks like MLB material to me. Good luck on hitting Price. That guy competes as hard as anyone, and will not be rattled. Was pretty classy for a klemmer though, sounds like. Jack-off should take notes from his assistants, and maybe Ray won't pimp slap him.

so laughable it almost leaves you speechless. That damn dig against Tanner & pitchers' arms goes way back, but, of course, there's no substance to it. But....think about it...to win a National Championship?? The odds of making the Big Leagues are miniscule, anyway. A "ruined" pitching arm doesn't mean it's useless & has to be amputated. For any other purpose than baseball, it doesn't matter. A LOT of college pitchers would take a chance on a "ruined" arm in order to win a national title...they ain't gonna be big leaguers anyway!! What a stupid thing to say!! And another thing, if having a great "college atmosphere" means your park has a ski slope leading up to the fence and w/ no warning track, then the tates have the field of dreams!!
