Holmes ready for Razorbacks rematch

OMAHA, Neb. - Junior Colby Holmes didn't have his best performance against Arkansas on Monday but he's ready to give it another go in tonight's game at 9 p.m. on ESPN.

  • One thing about Holmes, he seems to me to usually bounce back strong after poor starts. I think we'll see more of the guy that got his no-no broken up in the 8th against Manhattan than the guy who was leaving everything up Monday night.

I agree. He rarely has 2 below average performances in a row. I hope he pitches as well as Monty. It would have to be the greatest pitching performances in 2 days ever in Omaha.

  • Ya'll both are right. He's a very laid back guy, and an excellent teammate. He will bounce back. He spins the ball very well; breaking pitches are solid. He will keep them down, and be the ace he normally is.

What I like about him is, he is always hanging around the younger guys. Whenever you see him in the dugout, he is right beside Jordy. He goes and sits by English if he had a bad at bat, and stays with Greiner a good bit as well. Good kid, that Colby fella.

  • Colby did NOT have a "down" performance Monday night! Our offense cost us that game. He could have sued for non-support! The difference in that game was they had two, two-out hits w/RISP and we had one. That's it! If he has another outing like the other night we will be just fine.

Dude, he gave up 2 & was taken out in the fourth. That's an ERA around 5. Plus, he was leaving all his pitches up from the first to the fourth. He was going to get pounded even worse if they hadn't pulled him & Meyer knew it.

It is true that we were shut down when the opportunities arose. But that was nowhere near the quality start Holmes had the previous two games. It happens to the best players, and Holmes was the recipient of a poor performance the last time out. It'll most certainly look better tonight, I'm sure. As I heard someone say last night, sometimes you're the dog, sometimes you're the fire hydrant. His turn to be the dog now.

Disagree. 2 runs in 3+ innings is not a good outing.

Needs to keep leadoff hitters off base and he should be ok.

Yes the offense was poor at best, but Colby was up in the zone. He doesn't throw hard enough to do that, and when he does you get the results he had Monday. That being said I think he rebounds strong tonight. He is a damn fine college pitcher IMO.

  • He wasn't sharp. He was allowing lead-off hitters to reach at nearly a 100% rate. I'd call that a rough start, regardless of the lack of a big inning. However, if you look back over his 3 years at USC, he's had very few bad outings. If my math is correct, he's 16-5 with a 3.60 ERA in his career. I think he's going to get it done today. His bugaboo has always been the long ball, and that's been basically taken out of play with the bats and this stadium. If he can just keep the ball down, they are going to have a tough time with him.

  • I don't think he had that bad of an outing either. I think the main reason he was taken out was b/c Ray didn't think our offense was going to produce and we needed to hold them to 2 runs. We have been spoiled the last several years. Giving up 4 or 5 runs in a college baseball game is not really that bad. Plus, leaving the ball up in this new stadium is not that big a deal. Arkansas might have 2-3 guys in their lineup that could take one out.

Leaving the ball up doesn't only give up the long ball. It also leads to liners to the gaps. He was nowhere near his top form. He has the ability to shut teams down for 6 to 7 innings and, on occasion, more. He was going to be toast if he'd stayed in there any longer. But I think he'll be a different pitcher tonight.

  • You guys are right, he diidn't have his best stuff and RT had a short leash. I forgot he only pitched 3.2 innnings. TW gave us a chance, so he really did a good job. I believe Colby will be just fine tonight but it will take 5 runs to win.

  • His last start was okay. He wasn't particularly sharp but wasn't that bad. RT has a quick trigger in the CWS. If it had been a regular season game I think he keeps him in, but in an elimination game you've got to have a short leash.
