Hoops commit No. 3 ....

  • Laimonas Chatkevicius has committed to USC according to head coach Kelvin Jefferson. Hope to have more soon. He's a 6-10 big man from Lithuania who had signed with Kansas State but got out of his LOI.

  • Having 2 lithuanians on the court at the same could be a secret weapon considering they can talk to each other and no one else will have a clue what they are saying.

  • Dude, he is making a serious impact in his first months. If Martin believes this talent is that good i think he just transformed our basketball team that quick as well.

Our Lowcountry boys can already do that with a little gullah/geechee talk.

  • I actually thought Geathers was pretty serviceable last year. WAY better than I thought he was going to be from what we all heard about him. As long as he can set solid screens, rebound and block the occasional shot then that is all we need from our Center at this level. Big men with solid offensive games are hard to come by unless you are an elite basketball school.

  • That is an awful thing to say. This new guy is likely to redshirt, as from the games I saw him in, he doesn't really play inside at all. He is a jump shooting big man. Geathers is your likely starter at center next year. Either him or Haughton.

I bet Geathers has a good year next year, better than any of us imagined. He came off the bench and gave us solid defense and rebounding last year. Pretty good for a guy new to basketball in no real system.

No offense Steve, but I really, really hope you're wrong. I've never heard one negative comment about Geathers off the court, so I'm guessing he's a wonderful young man, but he would have trouble starting at a D-2 school right now. Hopefully Martin and staff can coach him up and he'll end up giving us good minutes and quality stats in the future.

I thought he was a questionable take to begin with and truthfully he probably still is,, but he is somewhat athletic. He surprised me with his ability to get off the floor.

if you are a legit 6'10" can shoot jump shots & pass the ball the way european players can, and you are a year away from playing, giving you more time to polish your game, there should be no reason he could not play.

and if worse comes to worse, you can always redshirt. by then maybe he will be a seven footer. you never know about these kids

    Aaron Burr Cock

  • ESPN has him as a 3 star with an 89 rating here's their eval

    Strengths:
Chatkevicius is a highly skilled seven-footer with a soft shooting stroke all the way out to 22 feet. He is a consistent three-point threat both when trailing the break as well as when playing pick and pop. He also does a great job of running to the rim when rolling off of ball screens and his versatility is a major asset in that action. Chatkevicius has an equally soft touch with his jump hook around the rim to compliment good hands and feet in his post game. He has a good understanding of the game for a post player and is also a good passer.

    Weaknesses:
Chatkevicius has some athletic limitations. He doesn't leap especially quick or high around the rim and consequently isn't much of a shot-blocker nor a very dominant finisher. He also needs to improve his conditioning as he can fatigue quickly at the moment and struggle to keep up with the pace of the game at times. As a low post player, he can turn either shoulder but will typically only score with his right hand. He would also do well to become a more aggressive rebounder, especially outside of his immediate area.

    Bottom Line:
He's reminiscent of former West Virginia big man Kevin Pittsnogle in that he's a highly skilled seven-footer who compensates for his lack of explosiveness and athleticism with his highly developed skill set and three-point shooting range

I think Geathers has the potential to be a good college center. He didn't get a lot of minutes last year, but I thought he did pretty well when he was put in games. I didn't know what to expect from him, but I was pleasantly surprised. He has good hands and moves pretty well for a big guy. I think he needs confidence, playing time, and instruction, but I see potential in the young man. I like him. I don't know what our coaches will think of him, but I won't be surprised if he plays major minutes next year.

I wish him all the best, but I don't think he is a D-1 player. I want to eat my words though. I'm pulling for him to make great strides and help us a lot this year.
