Hyman a top candidate at TAMU

South Carolina athletic director Eric Hyman, again, is a lead candidate for the same position at another major university.

  • It would be disappointing if Hyman left but the projects he's helped develop and the changes he's put in place will live on regardless. He'll always be one who has some huge fans and some huge enemies, but he did what needed to be done and you can't argue with the results.

  • Uh oh ... would that mean Tanner would become AD sooner rather than later?

  • I think he'll stay for the same reason he turned down the job at UNC. He spurned his alma mater last year because he's only a few years away from collecting his state pension (i Believe). He may have ties to Texas and his kids may be there but I dont think anything has changed for him.

That being said its really important that TAMU makes a home run hire here and Hyman would absolutely be just that. It speaks very highly of the personnel we have in the athletic department. Again, its a great time to be a Gamecock.

Maybe that t-net thread was right about Texas, Tanner, and Holbrook, but wrong about which school and Texas and who was moving where?

  • I would dearly hate to lose him. He's taken us to places where we've never been before.

  • Would really miss him. He's done a ton, and presided over the biggest cultural change and program success ever at USC.

  • Eric Hyman story from Omaha......

I've always been a big fan of Hyman the businessman, and its obvious he has done a tremendous job for the University. But he seems to be a pretty darn good guy as well. Went with some friends and family to Omaha this past weekend for the first time. There are several ways to get tickets and someone had mentioned that gamecock club members could purchase at team hotel on day of game. My buddy and I went to Hilton to see about that and Mr. Hyman happened to be walking right in the door with us. We introduced ourselves and merely asked him if he knew where in the hotel we needed to go (where the merchant room was.) He said he wasn't sure but made a phone call. No one answered. So he actually made another phone call. Told us where to go and who to go see, etc.... The next day we had taken our sons back to Hilton to get autographs before bus loaded, and Mr. Hyman saw us, and made it a point to walk over to ask if we had luck getting tickets, etc... Thought that was pretty cool.

  • LOL, funny how the opinions of Hyman shift so drastically. Most of this board used to want to run him out of town. Now people don't want him to leave. Go figure.

Personally, I've always felt Hyman was a strong AD, and he's done a lot to bridge the gap between USC and most other SEC universities. I'd hate to see him leave, but, honestly, I'd ask him to play a very large role in helping us choose his successor if he's going to leave. I think his judgment is very sound, and I think he could identify a very strong candidate to whom he would hand over the reins.

That would really suck. I know that there is a faction of fans that do not care for Eric Hyman but I for one am grateful for everything he has done for this universities athletic department and I would hate to see him leave this job for any other job, especially one in our own conference.

  • Time for Ray Tanner to move to the AD's office. Maybe he can continue to coach and also be AD for a while. I believe a future as AD is something he has desired.

Losing Hyman is going to blow but if this situation plays out right it may not be that bad.

Right on. Hyman has been tremendous for our University and got a lot of hate early on for doing the things he did to make us competitive.

  • Whittle - I am pretty sure the University would consider Tanner for AD but is there any indication that Tanner can do the job? I have heard various opinions and was wondering about yours.

I have questions about on the job training in today's SEC as well. He deserves a look and he may be the replacement but I think we need a search.

I agree, we have made a lot of progress to step back now. Hopefully everything will just stay the same for a few more years.
