I am very surprised at all of the whining re: baseball team

  • Football, I get it. Basketball, no brainer. But our baseball team? This surprises me for two reasons:

    1. We are the two-time reigning National Champions, so that should at least curry some amount of leniency from our fans; and,
    2. We have a pattern of playing our best ball when our backs are against the wall.

Come on everyone, lay-off the BS. Constructive criticism and discussion is great, but the whining is terrible. Our team has given us 100% and has produced consistently over the past 3 years.

My thoughts on the team and tonights game:

    1. I would have Tanner English lead-off, or at least move him to a hitting position that isn't followed by Greiner. Greiner cannot bunt and not being able to do so nullifies one of our best weapons. I would come out and play agressive for 2 reasons: A. It emphasizes our "back against the wall" / underdog mantra; and B. it can help create offense.
    2. I may be the only person on the Board (based on what I've read this morning) that liked the idea of sending Matthews / Matthews trying on his on to go to third. I don't think that play changed the outcome of the game, but it signaled we were not going to lay down and were trying to match their aggressiveness.
    3. Arizona was the better team last night...defensively, pitching, and hitting. They also beat us by being very aggressive. I can't remember any other team BEATING us in the past three seasons. They did, but the good news is it took an almost perfect game. Not taking anything away from the Wildcats, but I doubt they can play that well again, especially v. Roth.
    4. Saying our hitting has to improve is pointing out the obvious, but I doubt that this team is going to switch its' DNA overnight. We are a pitching / defensive ballclub capable of 4-5 runs on a good night. We have to get great pitching first.

Just my thoughts. Win or loose, we are still the best program in the nation.

  • Why are you surprised? We have a pocket of fans that are simply inherently negative. It's always been that way and it always will be.

They don't have to be made.

We have a pocket of fans who are determined to control what's posted on the board and they whine and cry each time they read a post which doesn't suit them. Apparently, it's never occured to this pocket of fans that they don't have to read what they don't like.

You nailed it. Some folks are simply negative and they try to sap the energy of others.....energy vampires.

Ignore them, remain upbeat and positive and stroll down the sunny side of the street.

Whining in baseball? C'mon, we are playing for our third straight Natty. We are there, in the game, still trying. Two games left.

I am proud of those gentlemen whatever the outcome. We don't pick on our own, we support them, no matter what.

Play ball and play well. Game 2 tonight.

    Go Carolina.

Trust me, I am not trying to control you or anyone else. I do, however, have a right to post critiques of those who act like 5 year olds, Mr. Bass.

What a shocker that you post this.

Feel free to bash players and coaches as long as fans are allowed to say whatever they want to with NOOOOO restrictions.

Critiques? Is that what we're calling attacks these days? Attack posts are clearly allowed these days so carry on. I'll respond to the whining about the whining, and so on.

These posts should be made. We have 17-22 year old kids out there busting their butts trying to win a national title and we have a bunch of 30 and 40 year old wanna be's sitting on the couch trashing every misstep. These kids read this site. So do recruits - you really want them hearing that if you can't win a national title every year its not good enough and fans will pick you apart?

That said, we are not a unique fan base. All schools have their jerks who aren't happy unless they can pick apart someone and the message board such as this one allow them to do so without consequence.

Some of us really need to think before we post.

Plus there are a good many posters that think that it is a good idea to post stupid things out of frustration when we lose. Alcohol obviously contributes to this.

lol at something of substance from biggayal. he just goes out of his way to be contrarian.

I don't have much of a problem with tanner english being where he is, but more of a problem with greiner being where he is. frankly I don't think he is performing well enough to be starting over rosenburg but whatever.

I wouldn't mind english being in the 9 hole either.

I liked the idea of sending Matthews. we needed to be aggressive and gamble for a big inning.

I think the deal with Greiner is that he and Dante are pretty equal defensively in terms of fielding their position. Greiner has a + arm. At the plate there is at least the threat of some production. Dante isn't likely to hit much. Greiner got us a double last night.

Agree about English leading off or, at the least, having a capable bunter hitting behind him. His batting average is solid and his speed makes things happen.

I agree that we need to be aggressive for the remainder of the series but I'm not one to take chances on the basepaths with 0 outs. Allow English to steal? Sure. Hit & run? Yes. Bunt runners over? Yes. take third with no one out. I wouldn't have.

I agree that we are a pitching/defense team. It almost appears that Coach Tanner has built a team which is suited for playing in Omaha. You're right that we are who we are for this year. Hopefully, our incoming class will add a few points to the teams BA.

As for Arizona, they're just good. We have to play our best, including pitching, to beat them. We have a chance with Roth on the mound but I still feel we'll have to score 4+ to beat them tonight. If we win tonight I have a lot of confidence in Montgomery.

    Good thoughts there Al!
Do you have more confidence in Montgomery than Roth? Maybe I'm just reading your last statement wrong. But you say that we'll need to score 4+ to win tonight. And if we win tonight...you have a lot of confidence in Montgomery.

I have confidence in both of them, And feel we will hold them to no more than 2 runs tonight and tomorrow night. Just a gut feeling.
