I have read these post about older coaches and other

  • coaches that people want. Answer a few questions.
    1) Why would we want to go after an old coach who will only be here for a few years and then retire and then we r right back where we are. The older guys r just a band aid for a few years. Then we r back looking for a new coach. We need to think Long Term.
    2) These younger guys would be great but most would use us as a stepping stone to a btr program. Marshall is a fan of USC, he could be here for 20 yrs. and would consider USC the best job and only job for him. ( does anyone ever here of teams going after Roy Williams, NO , Y cause they know he is happy there and you cant get him away.) THis could be Marshall for us.
    3) People talk about the attitude and stuff. Well, last i checked we have 3 coaches like that and they have ALL been successful. TANNER, SOS & STALEY al have attitudes. This is what makes people want to play for them. All of these coaches are from teh same mold.
    4) Marshall coached under a LEGEND at CofC. He learned from the best and knows what it takes. As you can tell from what he has done at the schools he has been at.

I am not saying he is the only choice, i am saying he is teh best choice if we want someone here for 20 yrs. All these coaches we have with attitudes have had chances to leave but chose to stay cause they love being associated with USC. Marshall would come in and be the same type.

  • yep those "old" coaches really suck. Boy I'm glad we got a really young guy for a football coach. No wait.......

  • Rarely do coaches stay somewhere for more than a decade. I don't think you'd see a lot of support for hiring a 60+ year old coach here, but an experienced guy in his 40s or 50s may be the perfect recipe.

  • Hey night, this is basketball not FB, Make sure u understand who was just fired before answering. SOS was a legend. had to get him. He wanted a challenge. Odom worked out great for us cause he is still coaching us, Oh wait..

    Frank McGuire.

The best hire would be someone with great name that transcends the program. I don't know who that guy is. Cannot think of who it would be. This is Spurrier/Holtz/McGuire territory and that usually works.

Next best option is someone who has won consistently at difficult jobs preferably at the high major level. Carlen/Fogler/Holtz. Lon Kruger is a good one here. Tim Floyd. Arguably Greg Marshall. Ray tanner.

USC has typically gone down in flames hiring young coaches with thin resumes.

    Define Old.

You used two examples of old coaches. One worked very well. One didn't.

The whole age thing is comical to me. It is not the age that matters. It is the coach's ability and their fire and passion.

You also make an assumption that this is just a stepping stone job. If someone is really successful here, they will be paid, and will have great fan support. Not sure why this would be a stepping stone job if someone is a huge success.

If you want Marshall, that's fine. Many agree. That said, your choice to discount to age groups to make an argument for Marshall is flawed, IMO.

Old coaches that are really good can be successful. Young coaches can be successful. In between can be successful.

Don't care about the age unless they are into their sixties. Outside of that, get a quality coach, period.

I'd guess the thinking there is to follow the football model that worked out pretty well. Scott pretty well bottomed us out. Lou Holtz brought us instant credibility. Even in losing 21 straight the name Holtz meant something and he was able to pull us out of the mud pretty fast. Even though he couldn't sustain it he elevated the program and paved the way for Spurrier to take it even higher and actually build a winner that could be maintained.
I think sometimes folks fall for "basketball is a quick fix" thing. It's not. Not if by fix you mean building a sustained winner. If you mean grab a player or two and do the shooting star, win for or year or two thing then I guess it's possible to fix it fast. That's not what I want and I don't believe this is a 2 to 3 year fix. I think it's a bigger, longer job than that.
Now I'm not saying I'm in favor of the older, stop gap coach approach. I get it though as we have success with that approach. The up and comer type has been hit and miss and when we've missed it's been awful.
