I know I will get downvotes but hiring Tanner as AD...

  • seems very similar to hiring King Dixon. A good guy and a good Gamecock that is very good at what he does, but with no experience at being an AD or hiring AD department people.

Pastides is in a tough spot.

  • So...he is inevitably going to be a bad AD?

  • I don't think Pastides is in a tough spot at all. It seems like he made this decision a while ago. Ray is different than your average good coach.

Not what I said. However I do think odds are better with an AD who has been successful at another place. Tanner could be great and Morrison or some other successful AD could suck. But odds are not better that a successful baseball coach will be a better AD than a successful AD.

I agree I would rather him have his total focus on coaching a great baseball team. No telling how both responsibilities will affect the team on the field. If he retires as coach then i don't have a problem with it, but I can see him getting pulled in too many directions and having to be involved in too many things to focus on the ball team like they need and deserve.

I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I am all out of bubble gum.

  • Tanner was an assistant AD at NCSU... he's not coming into this blind. Remember that a huge portion of the AD's responsibilities is being a Fund Raiser, and Tanner is a Super Hero in this state with a monster approval rating. He'll do good and I'm sure Pastides will keep a close eye on the situation.

  • Ray is nothing like King Dixon. If Ray wants the job he should be the guy. It's the reason you hire good people around you. I got a ton of confidence he will push us forward. I guess time will tell.

I don't think it will be as bad as King Dixon but I see your point. I at least believe he will get along with our coaches which Dixon did not. He also has more experience than Dixon did I hope Pastidea hires the best person for the job. If its Ray then that's great.

  • Don't agree with the King Dixon comparison at all. Tanner has run a big time baseball program and as previously stated does have athletic department experience at a major university. Dixon was a former player and if I remember correctly was a branch manager at a small community bank with zero athletic administration experience.

No similarity at all. Here's what I posted in another thread:

"(Dixon) had recently retired from the Marine Corps and was a bank executive in his hometown of Laurens when then-President James Holderman (who later was twice sent to federal prison on separate fraud convictions) saw an opportunity to use Dixon's friendship with BOT member Herbert Adams to his personal advantage. Holderman's support on the board was crumbling, and Adams was a swing vote." (Holderman's ploy failed, as Adams refused to let himself be co-opted.)

King Dixon is a wonderful person who loves Carolina. As a Marine colonel in Vietnam, he had commanded the 3rd Reconnaisance Battalion -- as hardcore an outfit as there was in-country. But he had ZERO experience in athletic administration.

Where King Dixon was unexpectly thrust into the AD's job by an unscrupulous president, Tanner has been preparing himself for such an opportunity.

As Whittle's article (http://southcarolina.247sports.com/Article/Ray-Tanner-is-a-favorite-to-be-the-next-Gamecock-AD-79256) says, Ray Tanner has had experience: as an associate AD, as one of the few college baseball coaches running his program in the black, and as a liaison between the coaching staffs and the university president's office

There is no way he would stay on as baseball coach if he gets the AD position. He will hand that over to Holbrook.

I won't downvote anyone for an honest opinion, but I do disagree.
I have zero input, but if got to choose, it's Tanner.

Yes you will. Tanner is not in the same stratosphere as King Dixon. How about putting a little thought into this.

  • No down vote, but you're comparing apples and oranges. Dixon had neither the training or experience to be AD. Tanner has the education, was associate AD (with decision make authority) at NCS, is currently serving as special athletic assistant to Pres. Pastidies and was mentored by the current AD at LSU. He also has the respect of the other coaches. Any questions?argue

  • He's such a great coach I would hate to see him not coach anymore, and I would like to see a big time AD take over. I would think given the state of our 4 big teams(mens baseball, football, and women's Bball and Frank Marttin coming in and some pretty good men's BBall recruits) I would be surprised if potential ADs aren't lining up out of Pastides office for the job. I think Tanner would do well though.

Jamie Speronis is an associate AD. Is he qualified for the job?

    Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty

I would say no. He is good at helping my kids get players autographs though. I appreciate him alot for that.

  • On the business side of things the job Dixon took over and the job we have open now are not even comparable jobs. Financially, its a much easier job now. Hyman left us in a good spot for his successor.

  • Please consider the rest of Humanity!!! To mention Ray and King Dixon in the same sentence may cause the world to implode!

    Whit Suber

  • To compare Ray Tanner--bright and successful-- to King Dixon AND Brad Edwards--obtuse and incomplete-- to a great administrator .....is an exercise in futility.
