I sure am glad we are so deep at DL because it is scary...

  • ...how thin we are going to be at LB after this year. Tony has mentioned how thin we are several times but I didn't realize how bad it was until I went and looked at the roster myself. Mr Botkin should have an easy sell on some stud freshman LBs about playing time. I sure hope he can go get some. I don't follow recruiting well enough to know any names. Does anyone know if we are in good shape with any stud LBs?

  • Matt Rolin is the only highly rated Lb we are looking good with right now to my knowledge. It's still April though and there's plenty of time and evaluating left to do. Look for us to sign a JUCO guy this year.

  • Dexter Staley from Manning would have been perfect for this class. Too bad he quit going to school.

You have to hope that Mason Harris turns out to be as good as we hoped he was when Miami was coming at him during his recruitment. He and Cedric Cooper seem to be our best/most mentioned that we have on the roster right now. Of course we'll see what Kaiwan Lewis and TJ Holloman look like once fall practice starts. Add in the possibility of Rolin or a JUCO and we have a chance to improve over what we're looking like now. Maybe this Botkin guy ends up being like Elliott in that he really knows how to develop players?

  • We will have the numbers at LB but not experience. That is why a Juco Mike LB might be necessary.

Still wish they could convince Jeffery or Smith to take a RS. I initially thought Jeffery would be perfect, as he has NFL athletic ability but has been shuffled around a lot. A RS year would give him a solid year of coaching at LB and a chance to shine next year. But it sounds like he may start given how he played in the Spring.

  • They still have

    Cooper
    M. Harris
    M. Roberts
    Kaiwan Lewis
    TJ Holloman

    Golightly
    Diggs
    Fleetwood

to fill three spots. Maybe a Juco would be ok too, but hard to say.

I consider Fleetwood to be a safety. That leaves 7 players for 3 positions and I expect that we sign 3 high school players plus 1 Juco and that gives us 11. The numbers will be fine but the lack of experience will be glaring.

And that's different than most colleges? Honestly some folks just seem to lose sight that every team faces this situation almost ever year with one position or another.

  • Really like Holloman, Cooper and Diggs. I hope the three of them can get some playing time this year so we're not trotting out 3 with no experience in 13. Really like the three of them, though.

Also think we've got a good chance with Rolin and I still think we've got a shot with the stud LB from Charlotte.

What is different is that we will lose 5 players from the LB position that have so much experience and will return very little depth in 2013. That is very different.

  • What's lost from this conversation is that we only play 2 at a time. We're stacked at spur, so really it's about 1 MLB and 1 OLB position we're talking about. We'll have so many numbers for those two spots that someone will work out. I admit, it's unlikely for us to have elite talent based on what we know today, but it will be solid and athletic, so why lose sleep?
