If you were Mike Slive and had to chose 2 teams for the SEC

  • who would it be and why......I have 2 different choices for different reasons. My gut tells me Va. Tech and Maryland so they can expand into new fertile TV grounds (plus both of these also bring above average basketball programs).

However, if I was Slive then I would be concerned about either the Big 12 or Big 10 having a foot print in the southern region.....This is SEC territory and not sure he wants to see TV ads, billboards etc. etc. supporting either of these 2 conferences......What bigger dagger to throw at the SEC than landing Georgia Tech....The heart of our conference championships and the Big 10 or Big 12 is right in the middle of it.....Not sure this goes over too well with Slive....Really one could say the same thing about FSU and being slap dab in the middle of SEC territory.....So what about GT and FSU in order to protect the South.....Some will say they could add Clemtech but the TV coverage is not the same as compared to GT........

  • Va Tech and NC State. Maryland with its UA ties would be third choice, but only because NC is a state the SEC would like to have.

  • It would never happen, but how about going back to the SEC's roots? Bring back Ga Tech and Tulane. That way georgia and lsu have some instate competition in rich recruiting grounds.

Also... Tulane plays at the superdome, so stadium wise they are ready to roll.

  • On a selfish note, I'd hate to see any team on the seaboard north of us. I feel we have a recruiting advantage there.

Only one that would have to go along with it would be UGA.....Tulane does not have much in any sport really but there is room for improvement....interesting thoughts

    Va Tech and Texas Tech

Tx Tech is practically in New mexico. Even for LSU, that would be a hellova road trip. I can certainly see Va Tech as a great choice, but they seem married to the Cavs.

What kind of a TV market would Texas Tech bring to the table.....Another interesting thought if they do bring TV market to the party

  • Michgan State and Oregon....there arent any green teams in the SEC....

  • Bring back Sewanee.

  • Assuming I'm using the criteria that the league would use (tv markets and $$$$) then I would go for NCST and VT as mentioned above. Two new, large and coveted markets are added to the footprints. The schools would be good fits for the SEC geographically. The added bonus is that it would be a sucker punch to the throat of the ACC.
But if you add the NC tv markets, especially the triangle along with the DC area VT brings....$$$$$$$$$.

  • My dad went to nc state and they have always been my second favorite team. At the same time, I don't really want to see them in the sec and it is hard to imagine them leaving duke unc and wake bc state thinks of themselves as a bball school. Another thing to think about is while it might not matter at first, state would eventually start to take away some of our possible recruits who want to play in the sec. We are the closest sec school to north carolina and that gives us a big advantage.

  • If I'm slive my top choices are UNC and Va Tech with Maryland being the fallback option for Tech and NC State for UNC. UNC trumps NCS because they bring a national bball following that adds more $ to the new TV contract. Obviously my personal preference is NCS though.

I have absolutely 0 concern with the big twelve having a footprint in our states.

GT is out, UGa will never allow it and I cant blame them. Florida doesnt want FSU, we dont want Clemson, UGa doesnt want GT and i think that covers the OOC rivals(though someone please point out any I am missing). I am pretty sure where I heard that the three SEC schools have formed a pact to block any of the rivals from joining. If I had to pick two, its NCSU and VT. That gives us NC and VA for new states and foot prints. Plus I have always felt like with bothing being football first schools, that they dont belong in the ACC. The one hang up here is the NCC state legislature which ive heard would block any such move by NCSU, but Im hoping that can be overcome.

My choices as well because they would cut the heart out of the ACC. I've never liked the ACC and am very tired of their hubris.

  • UNC and VaTech. I would love for us to be able to have a rivalry w/ UNC. VaTech would open up some new markets, and they seem like they would fit in the SEC nicely.

  • My choice is Georgia Tech (too many advantages to count)

    and then between
    Tulane
    Louisville
    Baylor

These schools help both fiscally and academically. They are competitive or have the chance to be competitive in the big 3 sports (big 4 if you count women's basketball) and all have interesting features

Tulane brings SEC games into the Superdome and a great road visit to New Orleans. They have been a national contender in Baseball before Katrina and have had success in football. They are also an original SEC member

Baylor brings wealth and big time academics. They are very competitive in all sports and they are pumping HUGE funding into a new stadium on the Brazos.

Louisville, already an SEC atmosphere tightens the borders of the Big 10.

  • I like the thought of unc as well. You have to remember that with them it would almost have to be a package deal with duke which wouldn't make any sense for the sec. Or would it........

  • GT & NC St wouldn't help our recruiting in GA & NC...

    JWD843

  • Its, all about tv rights at this point. That means the SEC doesn't want to go into a place where it already has a team from that state. They will more than likely look towards a team from NC, Virginia, or Maryland.

    Phathew

  • GT & FSU....Atlanta is almost like a state all by itself & FSU is a national brand...Let VA.Tech move to the Big 12 w/ WVU and hopefully clemmons will sink along with the rest of what's left of that sorry ass conference.
