I'm sorry, but I really hope Tanner is not the next AD

  • I will admit that I think Tanner would be fantastic at the job. But at the moment he is the best baseball coach in the country, and has taken us to three straight finals. In my opinion this is just not the kind of success you want to mess with. To me, this would be akin to Nick Saban or John Calipari moving to AD. Sure, the replacement would probably be fantastic, but it would be extremely difficult to match the results you are currently getting.

  • I agree. I it makes no sense to take the best coach we've ever had, who is in the prime of his career, and move him to an administrative role.

That would be a lose-lose scenario.

Also, Holbrook would be under a lot of pressure to keep things going. The best time for Ray to step aside might not be immediately after one of the best three-year stretches in college baseball.

  • Chad Holbrook would do quite well as a replacement. Our biggest successes coincided with his arrival. Now, to be sure, Tanner is the key to our success but I have no doubt that Holbrook has learned a lot from him. We will be fine either way.

I tend to agree with you, but if John is correct in his assessment of coach Tanner only coaching 2 more years I would rather keep him in some capacity. He is great for our program and anyway we can keep him long term is good with me.

  • Unless Tanner makes an ultimatum, I don't see how taking two risks (on an unproven AD and an unproven head baseball coach) would be better than keeping Tanner where he is and hiring a proven AD from outside.

  • Joe - the writing was on the wall when Chad Holbrook didn't leave for TN last year. There is already a succession plan in place for baseball, which means Ray wasn't going to coach much longer anyway.

I think Ray is a unique, multi taltented individual who could take the reigns of the athletic dept without missing a beat.

  • I'm trying to figure out how people actually think Tanner won't be a smash at AD. Let's see possibly the most successful, the most respected and one of the most intelligent administrators in the history of SC athletics wants to move into the AD position and people want to be selfish and put their petty insecurities above rewarding said person. Classic Old Carolina. If Ray wants the job its simple Ray gets the job. Bertman did spectacularly at LSU and I have no doubts Tanner can do the same here. Holbrook also would be a homerun, its not a coincidence his teams have been to Omaha like 6 out of the last 7 years!

It's no different than any other business. When a school teacher gets promoted to principal it might work out or might not. Just because he is a great coach does not necessarily translate into a great AD. If Tanner becomes AD it would be an experiment. We have NO way of knowing if he would do a good job or not. I'd rather hire an AD from another school who has been VERY successful. Experimenting with such a crucial position when we are having our greatest success is a risk and just plain stupid.

  • Since you want to call others opinions stupid, let me point out the stupidity of your post. Many coaches have went on to be successful athletic director's. The best thing about our athletic department right now is stability. We have financial people to handle that side of the equation. Athletic director needs to be a leader, motivator, fundraiser and most of all a winner. RT is all of the above, Holbrook is the most sought after up and coming coach in the country. You don't sink the ship by hiring from the outside and overlooking your most productive coach in athletic history.

Actually no. Hyman was hired because he ALREADY was an AD and was very good. We hired him off of his AD experience and success. Hiring Tanner because he is a great coach is NOT the same thing.

  • Hire the guy today. I can't see any downside to having the most successful coach in USC history as our AD. If he wants the job he should be the guy period.

    carolinainsider

  • All I know is that if Tanner wants it, he should have it. We shouldn't go asking him. If he wants it, he'll put his name in the hat. If he wants to continue coaching, let the man do what he does best. If he wants to be the AD, let him do that. I say let Ray make the call. Simple as that.

Bertman hired Smoke Laval to replace him at LSU. That didn't turn out so well.

Not saying Chad is another Laval, but there's is always a huge risk when you replace the top coach in college baseball with someone with no head coaching experience.

You dont' see the downside in losing our best coach?

    Thomas Sumter

  • The only thing that Smoke and Chad have in common is that they were the top assistant to one of the best head coaches in college baseball. The similarities stop there. When the day comes and Chad becomes a head coach I will be absolutely shocked if he's not successful.

If it happens to be here and Ray is the AD, all the better. While Chad is getting his feet wet he'll have Ray to lean on a little bit.
