  • Any idea when construction would begin? I thought this was on hold. It would definitely help the camp experience.

  • our firm is on a team pursuing this. we were also shortlisted for the clemson facility but did not get it. I have been ribbing all of the taters at work about the difference in budget lol.

Have you seen the flyover presentation for the clemson facility? Overall, it looks cheap. I do like that it can become open-air. That's a pretty cool feature. And it is at a pretty cool location with the peninsula type feel.
But the facility itself is not impressive.
I hope you guys can come up with a bid and concept that is impressive to the University!

    What's the point of that?

yeah that flyover was done as a part of the initial presentation to try to win the job by the team that won..i.e. it was done for free and to get a design concept across...

the Clemson one was design/build so it was a contractor led team that brought their own engineers and architects...so basically we as the designers were a very small part of the equation and the proposed price from the contractor was very important to the selection.

USC is doing design-bid-build meaning they are soliciting the most qualified design team to start with, regardless of design fee, then they negotiate the contract with the design firm...we would then (hopefully) design the facility then will assist USC with putting it out for bid...

the process Clemson used - design/build in this case gets you a better priced project, whereas to me the process USC is using will get you the most qualified design team and hopefully a better design.

they are very plain jane on the inside, all of them really (done a lot of research on facilities across the country)...the additional money USC is spending will hopefully translate to a better looking product with more bells and whistles...

point of it being open air - its next to several other practice fields - on a nice day they can use the fields in the outside and indoor facility right next to each other and players can run between both areas - make sense? like if you have ever been to one of our practices the players move back and forth to fields all the time.

Won't we have outdoor practice fields enough to accomodate everyone?

If they were just excess capacity, don't really see why you would spend money to make them open air capable.

I suppose you could simulate an outdoor field turf environment, but that's a rather rare event for us.

"open air" = rollup doors...not very expensive feature to add...

also on the clemson one, the heating and A/C capabilities in the practice field itself were very toned down due to the amount of space of the structure...the heating and cooling in the training rooms and classrooms etc were normal, but in the big open space it was minimal. the open air gives you alot of flexibility on heating and cooling such a big space...for half the year you can have the doors open to assist in regulating the temperature.

edit - this is clemson's we are talking about that is open air - I have no idea if thats our concept or not but I'd guess so for the reasons above.

    Makes sense.

  • Most of the indoor facilities that I've seen proposed or finished have at least a portion that can be made open air. FSU's design on google images seems to do the best job of avoiding the warehouse loading dock look.

its basically the next thing in the recruiting arms race - these are going up all over the country. when we were sitting in preliminary meetings at clemson they made no bones about it:

1a) this is a football practice facility
1b) this is a recruiting tool

The more spectacular we make it the better. I would be honored to make a promotional video for this when it is completed. Video would pretty much make itself...the amount of upgrades that are happening at USC right now are nothing short of spectacular. The future is bright.

  • Cockengr, i saw the design as well as we were on 3 of the six teams. Its pretty crazy that it eventually went out of state as far as design goes, but hey i guess that is how the cookie crumbles. I was talking with my boss about this the other day. Hopefully we will be able to keep this one in state as far as engineers go. There aren't many architects in our state that specialize in this type of work. If you dont mind me asking, what discipline are you, and who do you work for? Never a bad idea to do a little networking.
