Interesting Conference Realignment Speculation

  • Clay Travis is predicting what would happen if FSU went to the Big 12. Has Clemson trapped in a weak ACC or being forced to join the Big East after the ACC implodes.

Hey, they could be conference champions every year.

Of course, after the 4-team playoff begins in 2014, there won't any more guaranteed conference spots in BCS bowls, so Clemson's championship might get them a Gator Bowl, at best.

  • I was screaming for N.C.State to join the SEC during the last round of changes when we got Missouri instead. I still don't see much benefit to bringing in Mizzou. However, what's done is done. I think we'll see at least 2 more teams coming in. In football, adding 2 more would allow an 8 game SEC season that would consist of 7 divisional games and 1 rival game from the other division.

i agree with him about most things in this article. the one thing i disagree with him about is miami being the team to leave with fsu. i think right now va.tech is a bigger brand and would give the big 12 two new markets and two new teams, both bigger brands than miami, not to speak of miami and their legal problems, poor attendance and facilities, and trouble with the ncaa pending. but it doesnt matter, if any two or more teams with football history leave the acc is in deep trouble. the teams he mentioned in the acc going to the big 10 are also potential huge problems for the acc, along with more money at all the other conferences. the big 12 will be the first to expand and if rumors are correct, it will be in the next month or two. they have to get to 12 teams to have a conference championship, and they need to do it badly and quick. with all the fsu smoke, they will in all likelyhood be first and then we can watch the dominoes fall all over the other conferences. notre dame is not going anywhere except the big 10 period. this will happen as soon as the first playoff is announced, and or when the dominoes start to fall and the big 10 makes its move. stay tuned!!

the kansas city-st louis market is huge. it has been a pro sport town but with sec football coming to the area the conference is banking on it being huge, no pun intended.

  • It is extremely interesting that Clem is not really discussed in this article. It just goes to show that there is not much allure to what they truly bring to the table monetarily.

Thank goodness things went down the way they did in 1992 and USC is where it is. I wouldn't want to be in the taters shoes.

  • Without Florida st or even Miami the already weak acc would even more pathetic and hilarious for those Orange idiots pounding their chest with their acc titles.

One thing I'm starting to notice in a lot of recruit interviews and insider reports is how much of an advantage we have being the only SEC team within reasonable proximity to the recruiting hotbeds to the north of us (NC, VA, MD, etc.). That's why I'm becoming more and more against teams like NC St. or Virginia Tech coming into the SEC.

I agree with this but if the SEC has to go to 16 then I dont see any other options.

Exactly, been thinking this same thing since last year when the SEC expansion was happening.

This is a great point. Article today a recruit talked of being the closest SEC school by a large margin to Charlotte, not to mention other areas.

Would be funny as hell to see the Taters get hosed in that scenario.

Karma is a bitch is all I will say. Clemson left USC out to dry when we jumped out of the ACC and they had agreed to bolt with us only to screw us over. Now look where you are Clemson moon

  • Couple of thoughts:

    1. I'm not terribly worried about adding VT or NC State when it comes to recruiting. Tech is a long way away and I think we can beat them for prospects. The SEC schedule would turn them into a 7-8 win team most years. I think we are way ahead of NC State as a program and it would take them a long time to post winning conference records.

    2. UNC would worry me more. Their branding from basketball gets them on the radar with a lot of high schoolers.

    3. I agree State wouldn't be the first ball to drop due to their UNC/Wake/Duke ties, but the SEC won't be the initial aggressor anyway. If the raiding begins and FSU leaves with someone else all bets are off. The conference becomes even less marketable and remaining ACC members could be relegated back to $15,000,000 per year. The SEC package with MO, ATM, VA Tech, and State could double the ACC's deal. If they turn it down would UNC, Maryland, UVA, etc.?

    4. This will be interesting to watch. Despite their big stadium and SEC mentality, Clemson just doesn't bring a lot to the table.

Me too. I want to be the closest SEC school to Charlotte and the rest of the NC.
