According to sources, a fullback by the name of Garrison Gist will be joining the South Carolina team and will begin practicing next week when spring drills get underway. Gist is 5-foot-9, 250 pounds and reportedly runs a 4.8 40-yard dash, 450 lbs bench, 600 lbs squat, 525 lbs deadlift. He played three years of high school football at Northwestern in Rock Hill but had to play on the offensive line since they don't use a fullback in their offensive scheme. He started all 15 games at right tackle his senior year when the Trojans went 15-0 and won the state title. His father, Anquan Gist, was a star running back for Northwestern in the early 90's and went on to play for The Citadel.
Gist has competed in and won several strength competitions and looks great physically. I have not seen him play, so I can't speak to his potential as a fullback, but he certainly has the look of someone who can help the Gamecocks as a lead blocker. IMO, Spurrier's offense is at its most efficient when there is a quality fullback leading the way for the running backs. I may be biased given my Rock Hill roots, but I think history has also shown you can never have too many York County players on your team.
Gist will wear No. 43 for the Gamecocks. He's in his second year as a student at USC, but I'm not yet sure how many years of eligibility he'll have. I look forward to seeing how he performs starting next week.
