Is Shawn Elliott the next Phillip Fulmer?

  • Minus the back stabbing of his predecessor, of course.

    Similarities:
    -Mastermind Offensive line coach.
    -Played OL in college.
-Hometown boys. Fulmer is from TN, Elliott is from SC.
    -Ace recruiter.
-Fulmer was in his early 40s when he became a head coach. Elliott will be right around that age when Spurrier hangs em up.
-Wins ball games while coaching. (TBD on Elliott as a HC, but he's getting it done as an offensive coordinator).
-Neither had any prior head coaching experience before being named the HC at an SEC school (if Elliott gets hired after Spurrier retires).

    Differences:
-Elliott doesn't have an award named after him for his players getting arrested.
    -Propensity for doughnuts.

From an ESPN article after we fended off Florida for coach Elliott's services:

“I’ll tell you what. I hired Shawn Elliott two years ago, and I tell people that he’s the winningest coach in South Carolina history,” Spurrier said. “He’s averaging 10 wins a year.

“He’s been very helpful. He’s the run game coordinator and knows that stuff inside and out. He gives me the running plays during the course of the game and makes a lot of suggestions.”

Spurrier said the fourth-and-6 play near the end of the Nebraska game in the Capital One Bowl was Elliott’s idea.

“We’re on the 40 with about three and a half minutes left, and the TV boys are saying that we’re going to punt it down in there,” Spurrier recounted. “But we had a 10-point lead, and there was no sense in giving them the ball if we didn’t have to. So we got in a funny formation and ran a quarterback sweep. Shawn suggested the play. We didn’t even have it in the game plan.

“Connor (Shaw) came out of there and was running down the field and nobody was within 10 yards of him in either direction at one point. It was sort of neat how wide open that thing popped. That put the game away.”

I think Elliott can be the type of guy who coaches us for 20 years and wins big in the SEC and nationally. While Fulmer didn't win as big at the end of his tenure, he still compiled a stellar 98-34 overall SEC record.

  • Honestly I think there is 4 coaches that will go on to be good HCs I just hope one is our future HC.

Spurrier will be remembered in mentoring a staff that went on to do great things as well.

  • I have been very impressed with Elliot. I knew he had balls, when he called coach Spurrier up before he had the job, right after the Papa John's fiasco and said "Coach, I can help this team". This is from a DII guy at App St. calling a legend.

I love Coach Elliots enthusiasm and drive and I am a big fan. I hope he is our next Head Coach.

One more difference, I don't believe SE will stab his boss in the back to get the job like Fulmer did to Majors.

Fulmer was the OC before taking over. I'd like to see if Elliott can coordinate an entire offense before we hire him as HC. That's probably not going to happen given that Junior's on the staff.

    Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty

You think SOS will make Jr. OC? I would be astonished if he did.

  • I love Elliott too but he's been here 2 years...let's not anoint him yet. Too early for COY too late for OC....just give him a biiiiiiig raise and a promise for genuine consideration

  • Junior and Elliott are already co-offensive coordinators. Not to take anything away from junior because I actually think he's a good coach, but he doesn't call the pass plays the way Elliott calls the run plays.

  • Please pull up the Elliott hired as o-line coach topic on here JC or Tony. Please!!

Spurrier, Sr. is the offensive coordinator. I don't know why he won't give a member of his staff the title but he hasn't done so.

Appalachian State is not D-II. In a few more years, they won't even be 1-AA any more.

  • Elliott played DE at App St.

App State is Division I-AA, not DII, now referred as FCS.

Spurrier will be here 4 more years. Coaches come and go every year. I thinks it's way too early to talk about a new HC.

I suppose we are splitting hairs here but junior is passing game coordinator and Elliott is running game coordinator.

Long story short, it looks like Elliott has the ability to coach, recruit, and lead men. I'm just thinking out loud here.

I don't think we're splitting hairs at all. SOS is the offensive coordinator and he has the primary responsibility for calling plays. Junior and Elliott have titles but SOS is in charge of the offense.

A lot of your list is exactly why I make fun of Abo and that scares me a little! I think Elliot is top 3 coaches on the team for sure, but I would like to see him as an OC for a few years first.

In my opinion, Elliott has done a masteful job, thus far, in all the duties assigned...However, to consider him as our next coach in the toughest confernce in America at present is assuming too much...

His duties need to increase, and he needs to gain the valuable experience which will only come with more SEC battles and age....

No matter, I hope he remains a Gamecock in some capacity for many tears to come...

  • Elliott will not be in charge of the entire offense while Spurrier is here. If you re-read the orginal post you will find a quote from Spurrier saying "(Elliott) gives me the running plays during the course of the game and makes a lot of suggestions.” If you think not running an entire offense disqualifies him from becoming a head coach, that's a prudent stance to take.

To be honest I have no opinion. I can see a scenario in which Elliott is named OC; I can just as easily see it not happening. I'm merely noting that your fixation on Junior is getting a little absurd.

The Roman politician Cato used to end every one of his speeches with the phrase "Carthago delenda est" (Carthage must be destroyed) whether the speech had anything to do with Carthage at all. Your incessant quips about Junior are starting to get to that level.
