Is baseball now officially irrelevant? MVP Ryan Braun used PEDs

  • What a joke of a sport.

  • MLB was already irrelevant. I had to research to find out what team Braun played for. Anybody that has followed baseball since the mid-90's lockout and obvious steroid age that followed is naive.

I still try to keep up with the Braves but to read a box score nowadays you have to be able to speak Spanish.

Did you see the contract Pujols just signed for? I agree that Baseball is a joke, but to call it irrelevant is just being wrong.

  • Baseball is far from a joke. If you penalize every sport because of the dumb decisions players make, well you could not watch any sports at all. Including college sports.

These kind of things including drugs among players in all sports is the reason I tell my kids to pull for teams and not individual players. Teams do not make these choices players do. Each and every sport is there for entertainment and that's it. You can not use these players as role models or hero's. They are there for entertainment only. As much money as they can make they feel the need to produce because it leads to the next big contract. Just ask Fat Albert.

  • Baseball is far from being irrelevant. Because of the actions of few you cannot demonize the whole. Besides, you're being extremely naive if you don't think that professional athletes in every sport don't use PEDs.

  • roids should be legal. Then everyone will use them, there will be no controversy, and players can beast out more.

10 years down the road let's compare and see which is the greater health concern, tobacco or roids.

  • Baseball is lacking because of the excitement factor. I love the game but MLB has become too slow and Selig refuses to make changes that make the sport more entertaining. Football changed rules to make the game more pass oriented and even hockey got smart about scoring...Scoring equals more eyes on the TV

  • Baseball isn't irrelevant. Its a great sport and yes there are some cheaters that use PEDS, Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, Canseco, etc... this Braun thing surprised me because he isn't all that muscular. They have him a second test and he passed it so he is appealing the ban.

I wish they would change the rules in Soccer to enhance scoring I am an Alum of UNCC and tried to watch the game the other night with Creighton. This was part of the final four in NCAA soccer for this year. I watched for about 10 minutes of the first half and COULDN'T take it anymore. I switched channels and turned it back on in time to see the last 30 seconds of Double overtime.......game ended at 0 to 0 . was decided on penalty kicks and UNCC faces UNC today. I am sooooo glad I turned it off and got back in time to see the ONLY goals of the game. Soccer is fun to play and the guys/girls are great athletes that play the game.........but it sucks (to me) as a spectator sport.

  • Growing up I loved baseball. In the small town of Irmo in the 50's and 60's there were only two General Stores and a Furniture Store. As kids, we would run up to Leitner's Store to find a used paper with the Baseball Box Scores in them... I could recite the stat leaders in both the American and National League. I kept up with the game until the Oakland A's started appearing on TV a good bit. No baseball player that looked like a weight lifter and could perform the way that those teams did were doing things legal.

I'm sorry to say I don't even know the young man you guys are talking about. I have long since put all my efforts and love of the game to the college kids. This is where the true game is being played and it is so much fun to see it the way I use to those many years ago. Thank you Ray Tanner, staff, and players, for playing the game the right way..

  • No. Certainly you weren't naive to believe the players weren't using despite testing. Users and their suppliers are usually ahead of the testing. If you get caught it means somebody goofed.

It's still being used in all sports, on all levels high school and up.

You definitely hit the "home run" here

Growing up in the 50's I was and avid collector of baseball cards - the great players of the day would rise up and be elevated to the staus of bicycle spokes accesory - to add style and sound effect to the bike.

Never really followed the sport until the Saturday afternoon game of the week sponsored by Gillette and the commentators were Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reece.

Knew all the Yankees by name; Howard, Pepitone, Richardson, Kubek, Boyer and of course Ford, Mantle, Marris and Tresh.

Never followed the Braves but knew their names - Burdette, Spahn, Mathews and Aaron

The Reds of the 60's were great but loved the Reds of the 70's - Rose, Perez, Bench, were iconic - followed them to the World Series. Baseball was relevant - to me.

Then the army life came along and I haven't followed pro baseball since. There are teams for which I can't name a single player - hell, I probably can't even name all the teams. Back in the day there were only eight teams in each league.

Today baseball, to me, is only relevant if you follow the Gamecocks...but that's just my opinion.

  • Baseball's testing regimen and punishment for offenders is at least as stringent and arguably more stringent than the NFL's policy on PED's. Both sports' drug policies are tougher than the NBA's.

A 50 game suspension in baseball is nearly one-third of a 162 game game schedule, certainly comparable to the two and four game suspensions handed down by theaNFL, which has a 16 game schedule. Also, steroid use was higher in the NFL during baseball's PED era than in baseball as neither sport was testing its players to a useful level.

Attendance figures for MLB have rebounded nicely since the strike and the steroid scandal. It would be more accurate for those who say the sport is irrelevant to to limit that to a personal opinion, not a statement of universal fact.

  • Steroids are used by all sports at all levels. You would hear a lot more about highschool and college scandals if PED tests werent so expensive for the schools to conduct.

    tdsteve22

  • The only baseball that's relevant is gamecock baseball!

Fact: steroids run rampant in minor league and college baseball. I know too many guys that have played pro/college baseball that verify this "belief".
