Is it too early to call Tanner M a recruiting swing and miss?

  • noscreenname said...

totally agree and a complete waste of a schollie

I remember a guy named Vince Young who had a throwing motion just like that. He turned out OK.

I would not want to play a team with a senior, experienced McEvoy at QB.

Jeez dude you lose all credibility when you say crap like that. Makes me think you might be a woman.

I'm glad you wont be the DCordinator at Whogivesacrap State or you might have to try and contain McEvoys elite talents in the Division VIII playoffs in 2016.

Guy was a project. Never had a throwing motion that Spurrier woud accept. Was brought in because everyone in CFB was freaking out over Cam Newton and what a QB like that could accomplish. Problem is as a QB you have to be a quarterback first. I guess it's time to revise GAs QB recruiting report card.

    Flame away

    Couple of quick responses:

    1. ALL college coaches I know consider all HS QB's projects. Only the fans label kids with "stars" or similar can't miss tags. TM was considered worthy of a scholarship by GA and Spurrier, who approves all QB offers. You may also be surprised to know that SOS has actually softened a ton over the past 2 years regarding throwing motion, etc. He just wants to win more than anything and comments like this just show that you really have no idea how Spurrier coaches or what goes on in film, etc. I happen to know him very well, and while he would love to have Andrew Luck every year he knows that the game has evolved past throwing mechanics. I had a great conversation with Spurrier recently about game evolution. Wishbone? Option? I-Form? Pro? Spread Option? Which is the best? He doesn't know, but he fully admits that given the systems most hs teams are running, the best system that fits available personnel is having a QB that can do both, and throwing mechanics are not a top priority.
    2. We didn't bring him in because of Cam Newton, but GA and Spurrier offered because they believed he had the skills to be an effective QB in our system, which requires running and passing. I honestly don't know which comes first, but I think you must be very good at both to compete at a high level in the SEC. Did TM have these skills? We will never know. I truly hope that he transfers to a school and one day we will say...DANG, he would have been great at South Carolina. Kenny Miles was a swing and a miss for South Carolina because he transferred not because of his talents.
    3. Was Tanner a swing and a miss? Absolutely. I don't know what the barometer for a 4 star QB and being "successful" is but no doubt that transferring after one redshirt year is a miss. But this may not have anything to do with GA's recruiting evaluation.
    4. Should GA's QB recruiting report card be re-evaluated? I don't think so. As you sarcastically pointed out in one of your responses in this thread....I am assuming YOU want to continue to win 9-11 games, right? Well, the recipe is clear: we need a QB that can run and pass. Garcia and Shaw have given us more success with these skills than any other period in Gamecock history. If your comment: "I guess it's time to revise GAs QB recruiting report card," is not a reference to physical skills (which I doubt given the statements re: Cam), and is instead questioning whether GA must figure out during the recruiting process which QB is likely to transfer after one season, then that is asking a little too much, don't ya think? I don't know one college coach on any level - and I know a TON of them - that has that ability.

In summary...yes, TM was a swing and a miss for USC, but GA's approach should continue as it has resulted in those 9-11 win seasons that you earlier applauded. Remember?

Great post. One point I always hear our fans say we are "loaded" at a position like QB, OL or WR when in reality there are few players that have real CFB experience. There is obviously a realistic attrition rate but the fact is our depth chart is dangerously thin and unless D Thompson proves to be the heir apparent we are counting on guys that are either not on campus yet or a true frosh to take over. God forbid Shaw goes down this year or we might realize how thin we are.
Spurrier knows what he's doing and I'm certainly not questioning but the attrition at QB has to be concerning. Hard to build depth like we have at alot of other positions with us hitting on a low percentage of signees. Hopefully Nosovitch and Mitch both have long USC careers.

I agree with you on the first two statements.
As far as GA's recruiting report card I think if Shaw is what we think he will be then you don't change the grade.
At the time we recruited Tanner he was an athlete playing QB for the first time and showed great potential. We took him as that having Garcia with 1 year and Shaw behind him with 3 years remaining. Tanner was worth taking that chance with.

    MrBigAl

  • If we are going to answer the title question honestly, isn't it too late to ask if it was a swing and a miss? Obviously it was a miss, the kid transferred before playing a snap. The only way to call it a swing and a miss would be to say it before he is off the team, IMO. You can't hit when there is no ball.

Now Broome on the other hand = swing and a miss.

  • I don't think Cam Newton had anything to do with the signing of Tanner M.

    Blitzer

  • Cockjudicata, really enjoyed that post and perspective. However, did you mean to say "Kenny Miles" was a swing and a miss?

    troutmaster76

  • think the question is who did we pass up on to take McEvoy? if there were other options that turn out to be players, then you can say it was a lost opportunity.

  • I think it was a miss obviously bc he isn't on the team now but is it really fair to say they miss evaluated after only one year? He ran the scout team and didn't receive a ton of coaching. Most QBs arent ready their first year or even first few.

I talkef to some guys who would know and some on our staff thought TM was a natural WR. Some of the best hands on the team and athletic with size. Im not so sure a potential position switch didnt play a role here.
