Ivan Maisel makes a valid point re: Whitney

  • From his "3-point Stance" column today on ESPN.com:

"After reading the allegations that the NCAA delivered Monday to South Carolina, it’s difficult to decide what’s more problematic: a) the athletic department allowed 12 student-athletes to receive some $47,000 in extra benefits; or b) the benefits, in the form of housing the players in a hotel at a rate of $14.59 per night, didn’t set off an NCAA alarm in any athletic official’s head. That rate may work for a cheap apartment -- it works out to about $450 per month -- but the Whitney Hotel (AAA rate: $99) is no apartment."

Remember that USC's compliance office approved the deal. Major screw-up, IMO. Even if one concedes that the rate was discounted for a long-term stay, middle of summer when hotel had lots of vacancies, etc., it was still bound to cause problems with the NCAA. I think the compliance office either didn't know the Whitney was different from an apartment complex and failed to ask enough questions, or they did know and made a poor decision.

Good point Kelso, and I agree with the latter of your last sentence, and that is what makes you so mad. We finally are getting great players on and OFF the field w/ a Coach that has always ran a tight ship and some jackasses do something this stupid. As an alumnus of our great university, it makes me very upset. This is uncalled for and is very distracting and can be used against us in so many ways. I am just hoping that the NCAA considers Spurrier's track record and we get off rather easy.

  • Well I live in a house with a $90,000 mortgage, have a light bill, pay taxes on the property and it costs me around $27 per night. That's three bedrooms, two and a half baths, a big kitchen, den, office and full laundry room.

For an extended stay of a year or more, in an efficiency, I'd say that $20 a day would be plenty. If I owned a place like that and could fill up 20 rooms gauranteed year round, I would think I'd do the same.

  • I wouldn't expect someone to pay the standard daily rate for a long term lease.

It is definitely a perception problem, as The Whitney positions itself as a luxury hotel, even though anyone who has ever stayed there knows this is not really the case. The Whitney's rooms are basically all two or three bedroom units with kitchens, almost exactly like apartments. However, USC had better be able to find some of these folks who had also negotiated discounted long-term deals with The Whitney, or it will look worse.

The $450 per month may not be correct. Didn't the players also have roommates? If so, it comes to $900 per month per room. In addition, in a hotel there is maid service. I do not believe maid service came with this rate.

Therefore, it seems like in the summer this place becomes more like an apartment complex.

Correct. It is my recollection that ONLY Saunders was staying in a room by himself. The others were all sharing a suite. Meaning, the were paying closer to $900 a month. Using simple logic, it isn't that hard to build the case that these guys were hardly getting some great deal. But we're dealing with the NCAA where logic isn't always part of the equation.

True. And that is where the compliance office, IMO, fell down on the job. They should have realized that the deal was going to raise a red flag with the NCAA.

  • 14.95/night is a ripoff for the Whitney. That fleabag would have to pay me to stay there. Big difference between perception and reality with that place.

  • Why do peope keep talking about the Whitney as if it is a The Ritz effin' Carlton?

If I drove down Devine not knowing what I was looking for I could go right past it 5 times before I found it. I've also stayed there several times and it is certainly no roach motel, but it isn't like it is some uber-super resort type place.

I lived in 3 houses in Columbia in my time in school and everyone of them was as nice or nicer than the Whitney. It is a 3 star hotel, not unlike an Marriott Courtyard, just in a nicer location.

    EarshotCock

  • The Whitney was built as condos and no one would buy them, so they were converted to hotel rooms so they could be rented, $900.00 a month sounds about right.

    EXACTLY

Whitney sounds better than it is. Nothing very glamourous but an average at best hotel.

They make it sound like they stayed in a Resort on the beach with maid service, personal chef and escorts.

According to Josephs new post, this may be wrong.

  • If my math is correct, the players paid 30 per month in total when the rate should have been 50. If the hotel was averaging 60% occupancy, this was a market rate deal. Everyone is viewing this as if the hotel was full and therein lies the problem.

Expecting the NCAA to understand real estate is also a problem.

    bbcock

  • What did you guys used to pay in rent per month when you were in college? If you were there in the last 2-10 years your answer will be around $400-450. Enough said. SUre they got a great rate, but they were still paying what most college kids do. They did nothing wrong and if anything paid too much.

    realUSCarolina

  • The only thing that matters is whether this rate was available to other students. And the only way to prove that is if there were students of no "status" living there for same rate. If there were, I can hardly see the NCAA has a case.
