  • What are your thoughts on this. It looks like they're trying hard to be legit and an elite place, but I could see all kinds of problems coming from this in relation to recruiting and college football.

IMG Academy to field a high school football team in 2013

Offering an unparalleled college preparatory experience combined with access to the best training methodologies, world-renowned coaches and trainers, and professional-grade facilities, the IMG Academy program will rival many college environments.

    14 June, 2012

Offering an unparalleled college preparatory experience combined with access to the best training methodologies, world-renowned coaches and trainers, and professional-grade facilities, the IMG Academy program will rival many college environments. Today IMG Academy announced it will field a high school football team for the 2013-2014 school year. Current IMG Academy Director of Football, and former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL quarterback, Chris Weinke, will serve as the team’s head coach and will be flanked by a staff of position-specific coaches with collegiate and NFL coaching and playing experience.

“Through our camps, clinics, combines and individual training, I have spent an incredible two years at IMG Academy working with some of the most talented young football players in the nation” said Chris Weinke. “I have been looking forward to the day we could announce the formation of a competitive team, and that day is finally here.” Offering an unparalleled college preparatory experience combined with access to the best training methodologies, world-renowned coaches and trainers, and professional-grade facilities, the IMG Academy program will rival many college environments. “Student-athletes are enrolled in one of the most challenging and rewarding football development programs in the country,” remarked IMG Academy’s Athletics Director, Greg Phillips. “The college preparatory experience here is second-to-none, and we expect our first class of football student-athletes will take full advantage of the resources made available to them as they look to advance to the next level.”

Student-athletes will receive on-and off-field training from the same IMG coaches and performance experts who have trained countless collegiate and NFL greats like Drew Brees, Eli Manning, LaDainian Tomlinson, Cam Newton and, most recently, 2012 NFL Draft top-ten picks Ryan Tannehill and Luke Kuechly. Additionally, IMG Academy continues to serve as a training destination for NFL, CFL and European league teams looking for access to the best coaches and facilities in one convenient location.

Launched in the summer of 2010, the IMG Academy football program rolled out an extensive series of football and performance training camps, which continue to attract youth, high school, collegiate and professional players to the 450-acre IMG campus. Now, Academy program enrollees will join one of the most culturally-diverse and talented student bodies in the world, consisting of more than 750 student-athletes representing 85 countries – all with a shared goal of maximizing academic and athletic performance.

  • IMG seems legit, as are several other prep programs.

But a lot of the low level prep academies are some of the seediest organizations out there. I work with the Club Football team at USC and deal with these people a lot. There is a lot of broken promises and chaos that goes on there.

  • I use to live near Img academy in bradenton, fl, I really don't think its shady, but its a company looking to make money on athletes eventually. They've been big with development of tennis and golf with a majority never making it as a pro. My only question or concern is if they or their parents sign some agreement stating if they go pro in football they have to sign with img. They have some great facilities, many players getting ready for the draft work out there, so having other elite NFL players can't be bad.
