JC, Josh, Tony question on Clemson LB Depth Chart

  • I read an article the other day that showed their depth chart after spring practice. I was curious about a couple of players we were involved with that appear to be buried on the depth chart there. I remember alot of our fans were upset when Justin PArker and Townsend went to clemson. It appears that Townsend is third string and has been passed by Blanks who just enrolled in January. Also, Parker was 4th string i believe. Were these guys just overrated coming out of high school, a "recruiting miss", or just not developed that well since being at clemson. I realize that Townsend is still young but the fact he has been passed already by a early enrollee doesnt bode well for his future playing time.

I was just curious about your thoughts on these 2 high profile in state lb recruits that chose clemson over us.

Recruiting is such a funny thing. I wasnt upset about townsend because i always had a feeling he would pick clemson, but missing on justin parker hurt. Same thing when scotty cooper picked them, and I dont think he ever started for them either.

Blanks is now a LB up there

  • Too, didn't they sign three of the top five LB's in the country last year? Unless one or two of them completely flop, Lateek may only see the field on special teams.

I truly hope so... but then again I would love to see Brandon Shell plow his ass in the ground and/or Latt run over him

Steward was their prize and he is down on the depth chart as well. Anthony is a good one and is starting.

when the season starts Blanks will be a starting corner and Townsend will see a lot of action at linebacker. they're just using the depth chart to keep some players, like Townsend, motivated. Now Parker is another story - think he was just a miss.

  • ^^^ This I agree with.

Not to mention, any players that were injured this spring would either be at the bottom of the depth chart or not listed at all. In the past I believe we would leave the injured players off of the depth chart, not sure what the Clembeciles do and I certainly don't keep up with who is injured for them.

Not true. That depth chart combined the SAM and nickel back position to give a depth chart. Quandon Christian is the starting SAM, Travis Blanks is the number one nickel back, meaning he is the third corner on the roster right now.

The SAM gets less field time now with spread offenses so Christians snaps are limited already. But, against a pro style offense, Townsend is second string SAM. Clemson is a base 4-3 defense which means there is a true SAM on the field when the offensive personnel dictates it.

That doesn't mean Townsend will ever be a regular starter, it just means that he isn't necessarily 'buried' on the depth chart.

Tony Steward is not cleared for practice. He was medically cleared as a freshman to play after an ACL tear in high school, then he tore his other ACL in practice about mid season. He is not yet fully rehabbed. Once he's cleared he will more than likely ease past Justin Parker as 2nd team WILL.

I would actually rather see Clemson redshirt him this year due to limited snaps as a true freshman and to fully stabilize his base, especially while Clemson has a very dependable starter in Tig Willard. He could then lockdown the starting spot in '13 as a RS Soph.

But, I know that won't happen...

Parker was a miss for everyone us included...hes a bust.....I personally believe that LT's attitude and work ethic get in his way.

    ceese pretty much nailed it.

Parker never should have been highly regarded, which is easy to say after the fact. But it was rather apparent in high school that his profile was built around his size + the fact Clemson and USC were so desperate for linebackers, and he was the only one in the state who even remotely looked the part. He wasn't a physical player in high school and was/is very stiff. Nice enough kid, but the attention his recruitment spawned was more the product of demand exceeding supply and it being a lengthy in-state battle for his services.
