JC - Just bad luck or are there other factors working against us

Bama lost out to Miami today. They don't take that approach at all.

They have a full class and better commits at the position the "lost" to Miami on.

  • Look at Florida now in 2010 they had what was suppose to be the greatest recruiting class put together in a long time what did it get them not much. If our coaches evaluated the recruits properly we could still have the best class in the SEC or of any team in front of us in the rankings. You don't know how you did in recruiting until years later. To think anyone knows how we did is just guessing at this point we will see who did there homework and evaluated there recruiting class properly.

Just saying we need to do a better job of selling ourselves. Miami and and ND are selling themselves despite their lack or recent production, we need to do a better job of selling ourselves despite our lack of tradition.

There's always a way to improve, if our program takes the approach that 6-6 teams are just always going to get some players over us, just cause of their name, then we won't stay a top the east very long.

Good grief. I think you are not realistic about from where we have come. Our staff has done a good enough job of "selling" our school in the past to land enough talent to take us to an 11 win season. Step back from the ledge. We have a solid program that is getting better every year.

  • Maybe the loss of EJ was a factor, but I believe the real reason is early playing time......McCord saw Clowney and Taylor and several others.....where's the early playing time. Shumate saw both our safeties returning along with several others.....where's the early playing time. The way I look at it, we got 2 of 5 with a good chance with Davis and Davis.......that gives us 4 out of 7, if we only get 1 that's still 3 out of 7. It is just unrealistic to assume that we are going to hit on all these top recruits each year. What we need is to get 12-14 very good players each year....that gives us 44-50 enough for 2 deep at every posititon. I'll take that and line up with anybody in the country on Saturday. Nobody is more disappointed on here than me, but we can't sit around and whine about it......let it go....our football team was behind in almost every game they played, but they didn't sit around and whine, they kept playing and look where that got them.....now it's our turn to do the same.

saying we signed a good but not great class and that maybe there are ways we can improve equals me having suicidal thoughts?

i don't think its about playing time

after next season both S and DE will be wide open for us,

so mccord and shumate could have both spent a year growing/learning

and then potentially stepped into starting roles as sophomores

which would seemingly be in their best interests ..

You don't win all your battles, especially on oos prospects, no one does. Not Bama not LSU etc

I think this is a big part of it. With South Carolina guys, you get recruits that either grew up watching us or have family members that are fans. That is always something there in the back of their mind that they always come back to. With out of state kids, you have guys that often grew up without paying a ton of attention to USC and their family members don't know as much about the school.

A prime example of this is Miami. I know McCord's pick seems strange, but you have to realize when he started watching football (probably around 8 or 10) Miami was winning 10+ games a year and competing for national titles. As attractive as South Carolina probably was to him, that is something he probably kept coming back to. Long story short it is just tough to recruit out of state kids.

I don't know that there are any specific reasons why USC did not land Shumate or McCord or Bullard. Every situation is different and recruiting has its peaks and valleys. Because it's covered from a media standpoint 365 days a year now instead of just in the month of January, it ebbs and flows and you have to adjust expectations accordingly.

Programs that want the players you want are always working against your efforts. That's the reality of recruiting.

With Shumate, Notre Dame did a good job on him and in the end, he and his father simply preferred that school to South Carolina and felt it was a better fit for him.

I am not sure what the deal was with Miami and McCord other than the Canes did an excellent job staying on top of him and selling him on early playing time.

    http://miami.247sports.com/Article/Canes-add-two-more-All-Americans-56066

You also can't get impatient with recruiting and where USC's program is at. Yes, the Gamecocks went 11-2 this year and won the SEC East the year before. Yes, the program is better than it has ever been and with that on-field success, it's very difficult for even the Alabama's of the world to come into South Carolina and land a top prospect. Everyone knows that's not the case.

This year, USC is winning more big out-of-state battles. The Gamecocks beat Georgia on Cody Waldrop, Chaz Elder and Joe Harris and may beat Georgia and 10-12 other schools on Mike Davis. That being said, it takes time for any program to be able to go out and close the deal on a lot of top out-of-state guys.

I again will use Alabama. Before Saban got there, the Tide basically recruited its own state and then raided Mississippi when it had players it wanted and that was it. There was absolutely zero presence in Georgia. Well, over time that changed and now Bama is a force to be reckoned with in that state.

I also believe that Jordan Diggs and potentially Chris Moody, Quinshad Davis and Mike Davis is a big finish.

Thanks JC. Always appreciate your candor.

Do you think GA not being allowed to travel had any affect on these decisions? McCord is a real head scratcher....

    cockawilly

  • The disappointment with McCord, at least in my eyes, is more about losing him to Miami, a program that is going to get absolutely smoked by the NCAA, and being thin at DE than something particular to him.

You made my point....they weren't going to play a lot next year with the players we already have. Miami and ND sold McCord and Shumate on playing in 2012, thus no waiting. That's the point. They aren't interested in "sitting and learning" even though that's probably the best thing for them.

DId they? Seems speculative on your part .....

Just as much "evidence" pointing towards other factors being as, if not more, important

Such as proximity to home [mccord] and allure of the program [shumate]
