Joey Pankake is freaking stud....

  • he is a freshman that is just scratching the surface of his talent, think about where he was at the first of the season and where he is now. I think he is a better freshman than Drew Meyer was ...with all due respect to Drew. Pankake looks like an athlete that could play any sport he tried. He going to be one of the best to ever play for the Gamecocks.

Yeah, I sort of got a man-crush. Still, he is a bad ass.

Drew Meyer ... the respect he's due is to at least get his name correct.

Pankake is awesome, though ... you're right about that!

  • Pankake has improved dramatically. His range has improved so much it is incredible. This group of freshmen is something else.

BTW, Pankake's arm is something to behold. He has a hose over there. Some people were speculating that Pankake would not be playing SS next year, but I think there is no doubt who our SS is for at least 2 more years. Tanner gave him a huge vote of confidence as well.

  • Joey f-ing Pancake is the man. He looks and performs like a wily veteran. Drew was sick as well.

  • Isn't it funny how the present player is in most cases(perceived) better than the past player. I have to say and no disrespect to Pankake, but I played two years with Drew and he was the real deal. Could fly, swing it, and had a cannon. For those who don't remember, he was drafted out of high school and turned down 900k to come to Carolina. Again Pankake is a player, but let's give him some time and maybe, just maybe he will be a first round draft pick as Drew was his junior year.

  • Pankake is a good player, not just for a freshman but in general, but Drew Meyer was special. He made quite a few errors in his day but many of them were due to getting to balls mere mortals couldn't. His arm was the equivalent of Pankake's but he wound up and unloaded every time and Pankake makes it look more fluid. We'll see how things turn out but Meyer had a tremendous career.

Any insight on the program that you can share?

  • Pankake is not the seasoned, natural SS that Meyer was. As a freshman, Meyer looked a little better, and had a little better range, imo. Meyer made spectacular plays look routine, where Pankake is still at the stage where he makes spectacular plays look spectacular.

Pankake is special, and is going to be great. I would be shocked if we ever had another SS as good as Meyer. Meyer was better than Nolan Fontana. Meyer also was lightning fast, probably as fast as Adam Matthews. We may never see another guy like Drew in the college game again.

Pankake is awfully talented, and I look forward to seeing him develop. He has unlimited potential at the plate, too. He is our 3 or 4 hole for your USC Gamecocks

  • Thanks #1Gamecock. I have been truly blessed. In regards to our program, as everyone on this site knows, we are in great hands with the leadership that we have for a long time to come. I do stay in touch with Coach T periodically and he is as passionate about coaching as he was when I was there. As for the outlook on the team, I personally am very pleased with what we have done this year. When ever you have to replace key contributors from last years team and place a lot of freshman and juco guys in the fire so to speak, the results do not always turn out like you expect. That just goes to show you that the kids are buying into Coach Tanners teachings and if they continue to do that, it will be amazing what kind of stretch run of NC's this group and the talent they have coming in can put together. With that said what ever happens this year, we should be set and should be favored to return and win the thing again. GO COCKS and bring home #3.

  • Thanks for sharing your thoughts, BDees! All great to hear. If the team doesn't win another game, this season has been a great accomplishment and we should all be very proud of them.

Please keep posting. No detail is too small. Does anyone stay in touch with Yaron Peters?

  • I haven't lately but maybe I should reach out to him. Will let you know once I speak with him.

  • This.

There are a lot of young whipper snappers on this board it seems.

Also, I want to see Pankake pitch. Whit has said his best chance to make it in the pros is on the mound.

Without monopolizing this thread too much, I was curious to get your take on the change in the dugout demeanor from when you played and how it is now in "the Roth Years." I know T. Dyson commonly mentions it during his broadcast appearances. Seems to be a key difference given how much talent we had in the early 2000s, but couldn't quite breakthrough. Or do you think Coach Tanner is just an even better coach with the experience and Holbrook on staff? Thanks in advance for your time and being a great Gamecock!

    Thanks Cocky, Esq.
I personally think its the same. Trey was our Roth in regards to joking around an making sure we were relaxed and just having fun. The one thing that stands out looking back is what we did in 2000 had never been done at USC (25-5 SEC record which still stands as all time best) and to follow that up with another super regional appearance in 2001 was unheard of at USC. So to me, it was sort of the unknown waters we were swimming in if that makes sense. Now, after all the success that the program has had since then is familiar waters and everyone involved knows what it takes and what role they play to accomplish their goals and what is expected. Sure we as players were brought in to win the big one in 2000, but none of us really knew what it took and what it looked like because we as a team had not experienced that IMO. That being said, from 2000 on, we have been very very very successful due to the expectation and largely in part because there is probably not a situation that Coach Tanner has been in that he has not already seen. IMO, what the outcomes of those situations were, and how the game presents itself and other factors of course, determine how his coaching decisions are made or not made. Now for Coach Holbrook, he was not there when I was there, it was Toman, Meyers, Lake and grad assistant fox byer. Everything that I have heard about him is great and he is one heck of a recruiter and teacher.

  • I still think the 2000 baseball was the best team ever. I still remember the way I felt after that loss I don't even want to say the name of the team we lose to.

We were very talented. We just didnt have a sunday guy that year. Our closer was our sunday guy and he closed the friday game and threw a little on that saturday and then started the sunday game a did a great job. We just didnt get it done. No excuses. It still bothers me too.

  • Thanks BDees. That was a refreshing and interesting take on the evolution of Gamecock baseball in the last 10-15 years. Makes a lot of sense how you broke it down. Its really valuable to get that level of inside analysis. Thanks again for your time. Hope to hear more from you in the future. Go Cocks!
