John Calipari on Darrin Horn

  • There is an article in todays paper with some quotes from John Calipari. I do not like Calipari, and feel he is a cheater, but no one can deny that he knows the game better than any of us here(yes, even those of you who coached little league, and pick up terms like 'outlet pass' by watching espn). On Horn and USC's bball program he had the following to say: "South Carolina is hard, its a hard deal to get going, that's why you've got to stick with a guy, and give him seven, eight years and let him get it going. The last guy to really do anything there was-who-Frank McGuire?" He said that Horn needs more time to let his players mature, and so he can get better recruits he went on to say. "All of the sudden you have eight, nine players that could start for anybody's team. Nobody(except some of the experts on internet boards) is going to question his coaching, everybody knows he can coach.(Again, Calipari is obviously not as basketball savy as some of us Carolina "fans".He also said; "I'm a little surprised at their record, I see them moving in the right direction, and I think they are going to start knocking some people off, I just hope it's not us."

Keep in mind that coaches do not say bad things about their opponents in press conferences often, but he did not have to say the things he did. there is something people who are growing impatient with the team need to keep in mind: Frank Beamer had losing seasons his first six years at Virginia Tech, if he was USC's basketball coach, most of his 'fans' would be calling him an idiot and a loser, and poop in their hands and throw it at him. I have said it before, and I will say it again: the recent success in baseball and football has given many of our fans a sense of entitlement and an arrogance that used to only be reserved for georgia and klimpson fans and such. We are a power and have a tradition in one sport: baseball, and that team was in very good shape when Tanner took over. We have had two impressive years in football in our entire history. The bball team has done nothing since McGuire. Some may call the two Fogler years a success, and I will buy that, but do not forget that the other six he had were no better than Horn's. For our own fans to be so hateful and degrade our own program is classless and embarrassing. Being disappointed is one thing, insulting a man who has never been anything other than classy is another.

We will probably lose today, and a lot of us are so invested in trying to discredit anything and everything that Horn does that some will revel in our own defeat. I have no doubt that during, and after the game, many of our own fans will 'rub it in' to those of us who support Horn. Players and recruits look at boards like this, so remember that if some of you say hateful and degrading things about our coach. The players love their coach, and if someone insults Horn, they insult our players. Also, for those same reasons, some fans are actually contributing to the decline of our program by saying things that alienate our players and turn recruits away from our program. I find it very sad that the same people who call Ron Morris an idiot and a traitor say much, much worse things about our bball program and our coach. Again, I have no problem with being disappointed. Questioning situations that arose during a loss is natural. It is how we express these things that make us either good sports and classy fans, or arrogant, entitled donkeys out of touch with reality. Acting like any of us actually know more than our, or any coach is absolutely ludicrous, and only makes us look even more delusional. This is my pre emptive strike for the game this evening. Classless, hateful, and delusional rants commence in 3......2......1...

  • Spurrier said Dabo was a good coach. Doesn't it benefit Calipari if we stink? As far as Ron Morris goes, that is not a good analogy. Morris is a fan antagonist, not a University basher. When the going is good, he turns on the negative articles. When you have a situation like we have with the basketball team, he tries to highlight the positive. It's all about going against the trend of the fans feelings.

If I was Calipari, I would want horn to finish his career at Carolina .

"Poop in their hands and throw it at him"? That's just terrible...

Morris is a coach basher who has said some pretty bad things about Spurrier, and it was embarrassing and terrible how he treated, and continues to treat Lou Holtz in his articles. So, it is a good analogy.

  • Steve:
I like your pro-Horn arguements WAY better than Jelsik. However, when you use the word fan in quotation marks and you make comments like --- "...even those of you who coached little league, and pick up terms like 'outlet pass' by watching espn..." you lose a lot of your audience IMO.

This is the venom I hate to see on any messgae board. You make good points...don't pull a Jelsik and believe the only way to argue with some of the people on this board b/c all it does is turn people off. Just my two cents.

It just annoys me personally to no end b/c those are cheap shots a people...take the higher road...make your arguements w/o this. But keep it up...I'd much rather read your pro-Horn posts than Jelsiks. Just ease off on the venom.

You do realize that Horn has beaten Calipari before, right? I saw it with my own two eyes.

If I was Calipari, I would want another coaching change. He even said that it was a hard program to get going.

  • so, calipari wants us to keep horn.

well, that about wraps that discussion up! lock him up for a lifetime contract1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

The whole point is, we've regressed tremendously in 4 years. Sorry, I don't want to see four more years of this.

  • when Horn was hired I told my friends he would need 10 years to build something.

The reasons were he was taking a job that historically has been bad. Not mediocre but BAD. He was very young, and was bound to make mistakes. In addition to those inherent disadvantages he suffered a series of bad breaks; Archie going down, Holloway, and Ellington playing football, that were out of his control.

I do see some progress now. We still need a couple of better players, but we've been hanging tough lately.

Everything else we've tried over the past 30 years has failed. So let the guy work through this. He has shown some flashes at times of what could be possible.

I'm convinced that if the University would have helped George Felton out of his problem rather than stab him in the back he'd still be the coach here today.

  • I am starting to think this is similar to Odoms last year. Underperformed but left some young talent that Horn benefited from but when DH had to flip the roster he struggled. I wish there was an easy way to split the classes up some so we aren't so young at times. I think he gets judged next year unless this team obviously quits. Next year these Fr will be Sophs and the Sophs will be Jrs so we are bound to improve. Also I think WG has said we are on some top 50 guys in the next few cycles that could be program changers. Add a stud like them to go along with an older team with Bruce, Leanord, Harris, Slawson, Gill etc and we could be at that next level.

People use the fact that Horns best years were with Odoms guys but don't mention Odoms guys were upperclassman. Im glad its not my decision bc its a tough one. The fanbase is gone but if we start wining we will forget all about it.

My thoughts exactly. Same thing was said by Pat Summitt about our Womens Team.

  • This is a difficult situation. The truth is that Horn came in touting an uptempo/pressure defense system and said that we needed to recruit guys to that system. I believe he has done that to some degree, but the system seemingly isn't being followed. That does raise questions about the coaching. On the other hand, a coaching change requires several years to get that guy's system going. South Carolina is not going to be able to get blue-chip recruits in this area due to the saturation of elite basketball programs in the region, until we start winning. Our only shot at getting elite talent is to convince the best talent in SC to stay home. If we start seeing some success with that, then we might get a shot at better talent elsewhere. Hyman is at an awkward spot -- keep Horn and hope he can bring in better talent and develop/implement a system that will win, or fire him, hope that the next guy can get something to work in about 4-5 years. The only way you have an open/shut case is if you know of a high profile coach that is wanting to come to USC that can give an immediate boost to recruiting (similar to bringing in Holtz and Spurrier in football). Taking a chance with another up-and-coming coach is just as risky as keeping Horn, IMO.

He has played an up tempo style until this year and the answer to why he changed is easy...no Bruce Ellington. Bruce is a high tempo guy without him we can't be with this team. He makes it go. All the teams that we play have been practicing for 3 months and we have had Bruce for a month. Why people don't get that I can't understand. I despise Calipari too but what he said is correct.

  • Steve,

Thanks for taking the time to support our basketball team. You have given a good argument as to why we should keep Darrin Horn, and I think most people acknowlege your argument. Knowing our history, it makes sense to keep someone more than the 4-5 years that we normally keep a coach.

Unfortunately, many of us do not agree with your argument. The fans have stopped supporting the team and two recruits decommited from the team, all because Horn is losing not only to SEC teams, but also to inferior teams in lesser conferences. We just don't see any quick fixes to the problem, and we feel we need to go in another direction.

Is this fair to Darrin Horn? Probably not, but when you get paid at the level he is getting paid, then I think we should expect better results. Compare his record to Dave Odom's and I believe you will see Dave's team were further along each year and appeared to be better coached. They certainly achieved more.

No one likes replacing a coach, but in this case, I have to believe he will be replaced this year, or maybe next year. He just has not shown signs of turning the program around, and I believe a better coach would have shown these signs by now.

All of us support the school and the sports teams that play for USC. We just want, and expect more from this basketball program that what Horn is providing.

If Hyman is going to give Horn something of a blank check to build this program for X number years, then that needs to be said. We lost two recruits this year who could have really helped this program because they didn't think Horn was going to be kept on. That perception will keep us in the ditch. Is Horn a good coach? Is Hyman going to give him time to build this program whether he wins or loses? Let the recruits know this so we can keep them.

As for Calipari....hmmm....not sure whether to believe his comment or not. We all want clemson to keep Abo on board...for obvious reasons. Does Calipari want us to keep Horn on board for the same reasons? Or was he being truthful?

  • long read, wont contest whatever mr calipari had to say, but bottom line, unless we begin not to just move in a direction but to win games, that eight years aint gonna happen.

i think they have some decent young talent, but it needs time to develop & mature, not sure it will happen in time. i hope it does. you are right we will likely lose, kentucky will have more fans for one thing & they are better.

but if not them somebody soon & with some consistentcy or horn is gone sooner rather than later
