Johnson and Southern Miss

South Carolina assistant head coach Ellis Johnson interviewed for the head coaching job at Southern Mississippi today. Here's a factual account of the situation.

  • I would be happy for coach Ellis but I would hate it for USC. He deserves a lot of the credit for our recent success. The dude can coach. We will have to shell out some big money to get someone of his caliber to replace him.

  • No coincidence we entered our best run ever when Johnson was hired. We are a 7-5 team without him. Selfishly I hope they hire the OC.

This would be a major setback for the program IMO. Major.

Agreed. They should keep continuity and hire their OC.

7-5 without him? Child please. I like EJ and hope he stays, but let's give a little credit to the head guy.

  • With recruiting at such a critical stage and our already having lost Jay Graham; I feel this would certainly be a blow of negative proportions. I understand Johnson's interest and he knows Spurrier may well be here 4-5 more years and no guarantee of his getting the HC position. At least we should know by this week-end, I guess. This certainly doesn't help get our team mentally focused for the bowl game.

We averaged 7 wins a yr before him. Look it up. Look at our D stats before him too. Facts are facts.

We also had a lot less talent. I really hope Ellis stays for numerous reasons but I'm sure Spurrier will be able to find a good replacement (like he has with almost every other vacancy) if he does decide to take the opportunity to be the HC.

Agreed on the talent. But our O has more talent too. Hopefully the success and gameplan from seasons end will carry over to the future and we can maximize that talent.

The good news for USC's recruiting is that they are almost done and G.A. Mangus and Lorenzo Ward are the guys recruiting the remaining target.

JC, any chance Ward follows Ellis to USM if he gets the job?

  • I don't like it when a coach interviews for another position even if it is for a promo or better compensation. I have had cars and other things that I loved and handled with kid gloves . Wash and waxed every 2 weeks etc but when I decided I was going to sell it ....the washing stopped as frequently as did the waxing. Not consciously mind you but sub-consciously. It was already a car I no longer wanted and did not take as good a care of as I had done previously.
I think the same thing for coaches.......if you are interviewing then you have come to the conclusion that South Carolina is not 100% where you want to be. So ..you don't get the job.....how committed are you now.....what is your attitude.....how can you recruit effectively when recruits know you tried to leave the very place that you are saying is where they need to be . I just think when you are looking around then you are half way out the door anyway.

What do you do for a living?

  • First, I would like to say that IMO Ellis has done an outstanding job as associate head coach for defense. I believe Ward is already defensive coordinator. I don't know Ellis personally but remember when he played at the Citadel where we both graduated in 1975. I hope he stays and really don't understand why he would leave at this juncture in his life, however, I assume being a head coach again is his reason. I also know that nobody is irreplaceable and I do not agree with the posters that his leaving if he leaves will kill our program.

possibly.....unless SOS bumps whammy to DC here. one would believe we could pay more grease here than @ USM

Ward is already the DC here.

Would you not interview for a higher position if you were asked too??? Commitment to another party has nothing to do with wanting to advance yourself in life and accomplish goals you have set aside for yourself if the opportunity presents itself somewhere else. He's probably committed to obtaining his life goals. Everybody wants to be the head guy. I selfishly hope he stays, but would 100% understand if he goes and so should anyone else with ambitions to be at the top position of their profession.
