Just heard a theory from a well connected Tennessee guy

  • He says sec is making a strategic move to 16 teams by backdooring the acc.
Says that slive and big 12 made the conference championship pack in order to force fsu and clemson to jump from acc ship to big 12. This move significantly weakens the acc in football and this would allow Sec to break up the Virginia tech / Virginia  partnership and force nc state and vt to lookout for themselves and ask for membership in football rich sec. The sec ultimate goal is to add 2 east teams in new markets and allow the divisions to be split geographically correctly. In current state of acc nc state and vt will never act / move away from virginia and nc schools but if fsu and Clemson move they basically have no choice to move or stay and wilt on the vine in a basketball conference which both are irrelevant. Just a theory but it does make sense.

Makes some sense, but I'm not sure how much those two schools would bring to the conference.

Virigina Tech adds a lot. They are already a well respected "program" and will recruit much better once in the SEC. NC State will be a lot like us, it's going to take them a few years but they can become a good program. Plus it's tv markets.

  • Why would fsu and Clemson leaving force the Virginia schools to break up? Virginia Blocked syracuse from joining the league originally it would take alot more than two schools leaving(especially one of them being Clemson-nobody cares ab Clemson) to make them split

VT would be a nice piece.

NC State might still be tied at the hip to UNC. To be honest if FSU, Clemson, and VT bolt the ACC, UNC would be wise to beg the SEC for entrance. They would have to check their ego, something that would never happen, but they bring a lot of viewers and cache nationally.

Obviously I hope no NC/VT schools get in because we are developing a strong recruiting ground in NC by virtue of being the closest SEC school.

  • Everyone seems to ignore the fact that UNC can legally control what NCST does. Also, UVA can politically control what VT does. Things like TV markets, good fit, etc. are non-factors for NCST and VT.

  • Not exactly on subject but a rumor I heard about Tenn was they are going to fire Derek Dooley after the year and Hire Bobby Petrino. Don't know if this is common knowledge just thought it was interesting.

Great point . I would like to have both in the SEC but I agree this would be a long shot.

Hasn't the SEC been backdooring ACC teams for years now?

I think there's as much chance of Tennessee re-hiring Lane Kiffin as there is of them hiring Bobby Petrino.

  • I heard the SEC wants Virginia a lot worse than it wants Va Tech, because of academics. I heard if they take anyone from the acc, it would be Wake, Virginia, NC st, and academic powerhouse.

I still don't know why it matters to a sports conference so much how academically powerful a school is. I get that academics is what college is all about, but conferences are for sports.

I don't understand the love affair with Miami. They add nothing to the table. They average about 35k for football games. Their tv market is terrible (mostly Hispanic) and it cost teams a bunch to travel there.

If academics is a major consideration then shouldn't Duke be the most attractive school to be courting?

  • From what I gathered from Slive on Finebaum was the TV market footprint will ultimately be the driving force in expansion. A&M as well as Missouri were calculated additions due to the huge San Antonio/Houston market and the St Louis market the SEC will increase their TV presence 40%. VA Tech and NC St makes sense from that standpoint but it seems there would be a nasty battle from UVA and UNC if that wind started blowing. To me Louisville makes much better sense for the Big 12 than Clemson. Clemson to me is a bastard child when it comes to TV revenue. They are wrestling with other larger universities for an identity media wise. Their athletic dept is not nearly as well-rounded as someone like Louisville nor do they have the TV revenue to make them attractive. Just doesn't make sense to even invite them into the board room. FSU is hemorrhaging 2 million a year in revenue for some reason and I don't think they can afford the 20 mil to leave either. Would love to have VA Tech though. They have the SEC gameday atmosphere and it would continue a smart growth plan geographically and economically for the conference.

Because it's ultimately the university presidents who decide these things, and Slive sold them on the fact that A&M and Mizzou would improve the conference's academic prestige. As well as boatloads of TV money. That's why the states of VA and NC are so important: large, growing populations.

Miami is not the Miami of the 80's & 90's, they will never be like that again.

  • Makes sense an does seem to be following a plan. I would say slive has a plan and is probably going to execute it to perfection before he is done as commissioner

His legacy will be the expansions and tv bucks that came with them impacting every university

    Not too bad

How does UVA politically control what VT does? The only reason VT is in the ACC is because the Governor at the time forced it on UVA.

Explain UNCs legal oversight of NCS. That's a new one to me.

  • GREED and greed alone will wreck college athletics. At what point in all these expansion talks are the presidents & conference commiss's thinking about the STUDENT/ATHLETE from a travel perspective and the parents who would like to see their kids compete without making it a 3-4-5 day process to get to & fro! Meanwhile, the ones making these decisions have access to private jets and are catered to their individual whims. These super conference big wigs are beginning to act like the fools in congress! ALL ABOUT ME MENTALITY. Who cares about working joe & jane and wanting to see their child compete without trekking across the country.

  • I have always believed that UNC and Duke make the most sense to the SEC. Never going to happen perhaps, but I find it hard to believe that the coaches and admin in this league want two more possible losses on the schedule like a VT. However, that money could be made up when you negotiate a TV deal that now must be compensated during basketball season. I know it is far fetched but makes a lot of sense.
