GREED and greed alone will wreck college athletics. At what point in all these expansion talks are the presidents & conference commiss's thinking about the STUDENT/ATHLETE from a travel perspective and the parents who would like to see their kids compete without making it a 3-4-5 day process to get to & fro! Meanwhile, the ones making these decisions have access to private jets and are catered to their individual whims. These super conference big wigs are beginning to act like the fools in congress! ALL ABOUT ME MENTALITY. Who cares about working joe & jane and wanting to see their child compete without trekking across the country.

The SEC wont be very spread out. The others will be.

Exactly. Missouri and A&M really are not far away. Leagues out west have been much more spread out for years.

  • Wasn't there also legislature that seemingly had Texas & Texas A&M joined at the hip?
I believe they could get around it.

I too think Slive would ultimately select both Duke & UNC were he to have his way. The TV markets in that very poipulated area along with what it would add to the conference from a branding, basketball & academic aspect. Not to mention geographical fit & the absence of burden that would be on the "student-athlete." I think this move would please everyone from the fan to the presidents & would draw hardly any criticism imo. Idk how likely it is or that it will ever happen, but I believe it's more likely than most think.

I don't understand the love affair with Miami. They add nothing to the table. They average about 35k for football games. Their tv market is terrible (mostly Hispanic) and it cost teams a bunch to travel there.

you sir don't know anything. miami is a brand you must be a tater. too bad from what i hear it's fsu and miami the two brand name in the acc.

I have always believed that UNC and Duke make the most sense to the SEC. Never going to happen perhaps, but I find it hard to believe that the coaches and admin in this league want two more possible losses on the schedule like a VT. However, that money could be made up when you negotiate a TV deal that now must be compensated during basketball season. I know it is far fetched but makes a lot of sense.

Duke and UNC accomplish 2 things.....1) huge regional following for the TV market that is coveted 2) Major in roads into basketball to go along with kentucky.....Makes a lot of sense but doubt it ever happens

  • Bringing duke into this league is a swofford-like move. The last thing the SEC needs is a perennial 2-10 team.

Explain UNCs legal oversight of NCS. That's a new one to me.

I don't live in NC, so I could be wrong about the details, but the gist of it is that NC has a BOT that oversees the individual BOTs of each state university, including UNC, NCST, APP St., etc. This state board is comprised mostly of UNC alums, and I've read they do not micromanage but would not hesitate to intervene to prevent any school from taking action contrary to the best interests of the state (i.e. UNC).

I'm sure there's plenty of info via Google.

How does UVA politically control what VT does? The only reason VT is in the ACC is because the Governor at the time forced it on UVA.

Exactly. And VT spent a lot of political capital to get the Governor to threaten UNA with a loss of funding if they opposed VT. So now a few years later, VT says, "Thanks a lot, Gov. We enjoyed it, but we just got invited to a better dance, so bye now." I doubt if VT, a state funding school, would be so brazen with whoever supported them.

OTOH, if UVA's response was, "Hell yeah, let them go!" the situation would obviously change. But I suspect UVA has seen the benefit of having VT by now.

With all that said, I could be entirely wrong. I don't follow political or sports matters in VA much at all.

I beleive that NC State is actually a UNC school, just under a different name than the rest of them UNC-C, UNC-G etc... If you ever want to tick off a NC State fan, call them UNC-Raleigh..

I don't know if that is what he is talking about.

I looked it up and you're mostly right. The Board of Governors oversees each school's BOT. I looked at their profiles and NCS BOT was nearly 100% NCS grads. The Board of Governors is made up of about 2/3 UNC people. That drops to 50% if you discount the ones that only have law degrees from UNC. Like you said, the Board of Governors appears to have the authority to nix any move.

    Upvote for a good call.

  • NC St coming to the SEC would be a bad move for them. They gain very little if anything. VaTech is Clemson North....you do not want them in the SEC......believe me, I live in Va. They are very overrated just like the taters.

The bring a football tradition program, a baseball tradition program and on the rise men and womens basketball teams. Not sure how it would impact our coach Frank Martin but it would open that market for recruiting for all sports programs for USC.

It was an odd time. The Governor of Virginia said that leaving VT out of ACC expansion would cripple the SWVA economy. Still not sure I understand the political posturing but it worked.

The UVa president at the time, John Casteen, always backed VT's inclusion. With the threat of political strong-arming, it gave UVa the greenlight to strong-arm the vote to include VT.

As for fans, UVa fans hated the move. I'm not sure they understood that leaving VT behind, it would make the Hokies' march to a BCS game each even easier ... Not that they have had much difficulty anyway.

How this moves forward will be interesting. From a football perspective, VT adds a winning tradition, a ton of fans (and ones that travel) but no real TV market and no other sports to help the SEC cause.
