  • Holbrook was on the radio this morning and said that Jarmon has already indicated that he will be signing.

  • Great article and info as always John. IYO what has happened to the top end velocity that Matt Price used to have. It says in the article the velocity will likely never come back. Why do you say that? Not questioning just looking for clarification
    Thanks!

  • Thanks Whittle, nice article. It seems we could be dessimated by the draft. Never thought Colby would go that high...hope a few of our top signees and current juniors choose to stay.
As several have pointed out the CBA combined with the scholarship limits on colleges have really pushed underprivileged kids out of playing college baseball. While this has been the case for a while, now it's even moreso the case. You will also probably see a few less superior athletes choosing baseball as a career now over football/basketball.

You do mean signing a pro contract, not with the Gamecocks, correct?

NM see with Whittle's comment above.

  • Who are some guys that are the ones that either make or break this class that we have a shot at? Obviously, I don't count a guy like Seager who is expected to leave.

Covering baseball and all the various scenarios affiliated with the draft has to be one of the more challenging assignments. That being said, you perform the task exceedingly well Whittle. Kudos to you.

  • Are those names you listed, like Wynkoop, Callahan, Jarmon, Iskenderian, and Britt likely contributors next year? Or, who are the most likely contributors?

It is. There are a lot of different scouts with a lot of different opinions. They tell players different things. Area scouts think one thing, national crosscheckers think another. Coaches are told different things by players and organizations. It's hard to balance out all the information and get an accurate depiction of what is going on. I do the best I can. ninja

We'll have a full breakdown after the season of who contributes how .... It is safe to say that all the players you mentioned are likely contributors next year if they come to school. I think you look at Max Schrock as a guy not on the list who helps a lot next season.

  • Its fair to say that we will lose a couple of big names that were on the fence, and Florida will land an entire starting rotation throwing 95+ MPH from the get go.

  • Why has Westmoreland not pitched since 4/11? I've been wondering why he hasn't worked an inning or two here or there. Is he in Tanner's doghouse for some reason?

    Thanx, looking forward to it.

I bring this up every time and no one seems to have the right answer but UCLA, Vanderbilt and UF are a few schools recently who somehow enrolled first rounders. And these guys were also offered life-changing money. Our last guy like this was six years ago. Why can't we get a Gerrit Cole in school?

Not a fan of "rumors" but i think you answered your question in your response. There is a lot of money between those three schools.... just sayin!

  • I think you will see college guys who have no business getting drafted early do so and sign for well under slot. Then have HS guys with high bonus demands later than their rankings and get their 2 million.

If it happens consistently at the same school, there is probably a better reason than, "I really liked their weight room."

  • JW,

At what round does a guy like Walker or Seagar decide to spurn MLB. How far out of their expected slot would they have to fall?

Vandy has that "endowment fund", where they give baseball players academic money. Its been an issue because they are giving the money to kids that would not be accepted as non-athletes. They get full academic rides for being baseball players, basically. Coaches have brought it up, but to no avail.
