Mangus explains QB recruiting

Quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus knows what he wants. He has a specific plan to recruit quarterbacks. So far, during his fourth season at South Carolina, he’s been successful.

  • Really enjoyed reading that. Very timely article considering the recent commitment of Hackenberg to PSU.

  • I know Mangus' style is to only offer one QB, but my question is how do you go to the other guys now that your QB of choice is gone? Yeah, I know he is still recruiting other QBs, but honestly they can't like the fact that they are only a back up plan. It's like going around school telling everybody that you are taking Sally to the prom because she is the hottest chick and you think you are in love for 2 months. Then Sally goes to the prom with Jack, and you have to go to Beth and tell her that now she is the hottest chick and you are in love with her. Then Beth chooses Tom because she doesn't believe you. So now you move on the Jessica and tell her......and so on and so forth. You aren't going to land a top notch QB who is playing second fiddle.

  • Great article JW, I like this approach of singling one QB out.

This day and age, the guys know who has offered who. If you have ten offers out there to qb's, they are going to know. They know the deal. Its like a job, if you interview, and your not the first and only interview, are you going to turn down the job? The one's you want to play for you are going to want to go to the best situation for them, like a job.
That is not to say that we should not shut the football stadium doors after Hackenberg went elsewhere. I know he could not comment on him, but I could read in between the lines that its over now, they are retiring.

What would you have him doo? Go balls out after one guy...what if he does choose another school...what then? Take no QB that year...stupid. You could go years w/o signing a QB...through no fault...just luck.

As Mangus stated, QBs usually understand the situation and don't let it bother them. QBs are usually among the smartest players on the field, so these guys know there is a process to this and that some coaches might have other QBs above them. Bottom line is that being second or third on our list isn't going to phase them. If we were recruiting a Chad Kelly type, then I could see him reacting like you say and being rubbed the wrong way by not being deemed the top prospect on someone's board.

  • Vandy and TN are clearly using the shotgun approach. Those 2 are great examples that all offers aren't committable offers.

Thats not even remotely what he's saying to do. He saying it may be better if we do it like most everyone else does and not zero in on just one guy until he commits to you or someone else.

Offer the ones you like, recruit them. recruit the one you like the most the hardest, while also keeping your options open with others. Just like any other position.

Great article. I guess I don't understand why not have multiple offers out there even if just 2. Our QB recruiting and improved over the past 3 years so the approach is working. Just seems like multiple would be a little better. I do love the record wins though!! :)

  • great read! Funny though isn't it that even with the success that we can all see in QB recruiting since GA was hired, the man and his style of QB recruiting still gets question by some fans? After all, us fans know way more about good QB play than any coach we might hire.

I understand fans complain, some fans compalin non-stop but just once I would love to see some coach (no matter the sport) invite some of these fans out and say ok big daddy, you know so much here's your shot. Call the plays during a spring game or fall baseball practice game or intra-squad basketball game. In fact Horn should call Cory Miller up and invite him to be the first...........
